am on the search for a simple cost effective solution for variable outboard high pass and low pass filters to go after mic preamps i have that don't have any filters for use during live tracking punk / rock..
don't mind diy kits or older gear that may suit
looking for suggestions.

hmm, great call. i'm only down the road from joe.
so that's got me thinking about a 4 channel setup with hpf, lpf, variable pad and phase.

The absolute cheapest is a used Intelligate, use the side chain in listen mode. $30-50 a pair.

capi 553F also on the radar. That seems overkill..but if thats on the radar, CAPI ML2 would be good. And look into a Mr. Focus maybe with a filter Colour module. Or just the Colours in general.

I've long wanted a pair of these: shinybox.com/product/guillotine/They've been offered only sporadically over the last 2-3 years. I reached out to the company recently, and there's a Covid-related supply chain issue that precludes their manufacture. Jon said he had most of the parts to build several, but not all...and they wouldn't be forthcoming anytime soon.

One of the few that claims some degree of discrete op-amp, but I don' think the whole thing is. I've got a couple of types designed but I can't find the time to figure out PCB design on a mac, so it might just be prototypes for me.....

I made a custom filter box for a client. Has a bit more going on than just high and low pass, but I could help anyone who wanted make a DIY thing. They’re not tough. www.ironageaudioworks.com/post/filter-box

This reminded me of this option too: However their website appears to be down..so not sure about that. Looks like they are redoing it. only $229 for that though. Features: - Variable Low-Pass Filter (2.3 kHz to 35 kHz) - Variable High-Pass Filter (22 Hz to 1 kHz) - 12 dB or 6 dB selectable slope for each filter section - Bump on the HPF (3dB resonance at the cutoff frequency) - Individual bypass switches for each filter section - Electronically balanced input & output - Ultra linear frequency response (Butterworth filters) Also...duh.. A Louder Than Lift Off Chopshop EQ is probably one of the cooler options. Bit more expensive though. But also a tilt EQ that is great so maybe more useful in general.

I have 8 channels of the Strange Weather Harrison Ford filters in 1U. Killer. Dsub I/O and they’re in a straight shot from my outputs before they even hit the patchbay. Just a little vibe with the filters all the way open when not in bypass. Extra cool, since not all of the eqs in my Heritage MCM8 have hi and lo pass, or if they do I can engage bell and work on them til I hit something euphonic. Super fun and useful to have it in the rack.

I was also interested in his 250 EQ thing too.

Indeed, he normally intros a product as kits then moves them over to production only. The 250's he did a second round of kits at groupdiy. I managed to grab a second pair of the 250's when he did so.

One of the few that claims some degree of discrete op-amp, but I don' think the whole thing is. No, it's not. I used THAT input and output balancing stages, which if implemented carefully, sound pretty great. Nobody cared about the DOA's anyway =) In a world where enough people wanted a second round, I would design out the DOA. The goal wasn't color, it was to create a really nice sound stage that filters in a recallable way. So why do the DOA at all? Well, because I could.. =P I knew going in that there wouldn't be huge demand for these, but the overall design turned out too cool not to do a production run. There's a bunch of aspects to the product that just didn't tick the right boxes. Not cheap enough, not vintage looking, not trying to copy someone else = no hype. There are less than 100 in the wild. I'm way busy with ribbon repairs and design work, so putting the time into trying to source parts and manage machine shops is just not a priority, unfortunately. Regards Jon
