New coincident 3 way with 5 inch woofer, much lower self noise, pretty noise for smaller treated rooms $349 list.
Kali's newest, most advanced studio monitor. Kali Audio is thrilled to announce the new IN-5 5-Inch 3-Way Coincident Studio Monitor. The product of two years of research and development, the IN-5 is Kali's first product that reflects direct feedback that they’ve gotten from their users. The IN-5 has the same coincident architecture as the larger IN-8 for the same low distortion and hyper-realistic imaging. Slightly smaller than the LP-6, it is Kali’s smallest speaker to date, and with a 12 dB reduction in self noise, it can be used as close as 20 cm without any hiss.
Like the IN-8, the IN-5 uses a unique architecture where the crossover point between the woofer and the concentric midrange/tweeter drivers makes the monitor an acoustic point source. This configuration eliminates spatial separation of the high frequency and low frequency elements, giving the monitor a highly detailed soundstage. The midrange driver also unburdens the woofer and tweeter, allowing for substantial system-wide improvements in total harmonic distortion.
The midrange transducer is profile-optimized for its role as the tweeter’s waveguide, and peak-to-peak excursion is limited to one millimeter, thereby avoiding intermodulation distortion which can be problematic on coaxial designs.
The IN-5 is powered by a 160W Class D amp with 80W going to the woofer, and 40W each going to the midrange and tweeter. Boundary EQ settings, like those found on Kali’s Lone Pine monitors, are accessible on the back of the speaker, along with a quick reference guide printed directly onto the speaker itself. The boundary EQs are updated for the IN-5, and take advantage of the fact that it can be placed horizontally as well as vertically.
The IN-5 is available now in the United States, with worldwide availability soon to follow. MSRP is $349.

Interesting. I'd like to hear their monitors, and I'm kind of interested in the IN-8, but these might be cool as well.

The main issues I've heard of with Kali monitors are self-noise and that the larger (8-in.) monitors could stand to be more acoustically "dead" inside as a box. Sounds like Kali is listening to their users, especially on the self-noise front. If they could come out with a "Mk. II" version of the IN-8, addressing those two areas, that would be pretty rad.

I'm part of a Discord server that's all EE/CompE students from the western half of the U.S. and I just noticed Kali Audio because one of the students works there and was talking about how it started. His dad was an engineer with JBL and when JBL started outsourcing stuff overseas, some of the engineers re-grouped and created Kali.

In theory these should be easy to address, but I’ll bet in reality they can’t do much without blowing the price point. I almost grabbed a pair of the 6.5 used at a stupid price, just couldn’t do it after some listening and knowing I couldn’t do anything to overcome the cabinet and amps. Now that they have grabbed the low price market it would be fun to see what they can do at an upper price point. The talent behind them knows how to build a decent speaker.

The in-5 are apparently the first in a new line, the reduction is self noise. is good, the dip switches let yo pace them owner you want inlacing horizontally and they have modified the woofer material so maybe better ?
Warren already has a demo video up and he is directly comparing them to his $8K Genny, he actually seems to be impressed by the in-5.

They sound a lot like the JBL 305 but darker and not as tight.

But if they're actually solving that issue with this IN-5, then I don't see any reason they couldn't solve it for the IN-8 also...

But if they're actually solving that issue with this IN-5, then I don't see any reason they couldn't solve it for the IN-8 also... One trick for addressing noise in DSP equipped Actives is to use a notch filter, works great if you have the DSP resources and your not already using a bunch of DSP in the same freq band. If you are already doing a bunch with the DSP in that region it can really screw up your phase response and if it’s near a crossover freq you can end up with a really strange x-over. The other thing is some generic plate amps just don’t get along with the impendance curve of certain drivers in certain types of loadings. Every speaker design is a series of compromises, as you move down in price the compromises increase exponentially. One of the most fun things in audio is to take a inexpensive powered monitor with lots of DSP correction and run it without all the correction. You suddenly realize why ATC and the like are so expensive.

Will watch later. I have the Kali 6" two ways. They're very good for the money but no competition for the next class up like Focal, Genelec, etc. The attempt to get so much low end in a smaller enclosure led to a bit of a imbalance IMO. A little higher bass frequency would have served them well. I think they wanted to grab some of the KRK market.

One other thing, when he switches to his older $8k genies you can tell they sound fantastic!

They even advertise the 8” as better than the 6” one and don’t mention the disgusting box resonance. Then KRK V6 have less bass than the JBL 305 which have less than the Kali 6.

I've never really liked any monitor I've owned. I've had them in several rooms over the years moving from location to location for work. This is something I will be looking to get after my monitor controller decision. Maybe I like what I have once I change monitor controllers, who knows?
