I use the UAD Fairchild all the time in dual mono. It’s good.

UAD sounds best to me. The IK is cool, too.
If you have the itch, you can always use the real deal on Mix Analog. Icing on the cake is they use Burl conversion.

The Fairchild model in the McDSP 6030 can be super great.

MKII UAD and be sure to experiment with the HR screw. I personally drive it all the way up to hit the model harder.

I like the UA 660 version the most. Even for stereo.

The UAD ones are very good. The IK one is a little bit more "grimey" not quite the same thing, the UAD is more polished sounding. MJUC is also a very good compressor, in general, and very cheap to buy.

i dig acustica's ultramarine and the UAD fairchild. UAD's a lot easier on the CPU (especially with a satellite). i engineered & mixed at a studio with a pair of fairchild 660s for a while – spent a ton of time running all sorts of program material through them. the difference between the hardware and the UAD plugin was indiscernible to musician friends i showed.

UAD 660 for vocals or 670 for buses.

Like Drew - lots of times I find myself turning up the headroom screw. Then cranking the input and adjusting the threshold to taste.

Never used a real one, but I do like the UAD's. Just tried the headroom screw clockwise and its nice.

I need a Varimu type plug with m/s mode for vintage type sound. Something 670 like. MJUC lacks it and the Neold V76U73 doesn’t emulate a varicom. Thinking Oldtimer ME, Magic Death Eye Stereo, Pulsar MU (can’t dig in), maybe even the Waves Puigchild 670. Any thoughts?

I know there are a couple of free and some paid plugins that do it Side question: I see the Fuse comps are on sale. I have the VCL-4 which of the Vari-Mu ones do you find the most useful? (I have MJUC)

I know there are a couple of free and some paid plugins that do it Side question: I see the Fuse comps are on sale. I have the VCL-4 which of the Vari-Mu ones do you find the most useful? (I have MJUC) Uh... none. They're all special effects that sound great. The 515 pumps badly so the VU has to be pinned down or barely moving. The 25A levels a little bit but is coolest when you make it oscillate. The Federal is the most normal but it's pretty bright and forward and has a super low fixed attack that's like 50ms or 60ms attack to make everything in your face. If you want a more useful compressor to use in mixing, wait for the Neold V76U73 to go on sale or check out the Waves RS124 and follow @ seawell 's video.
Get the VCL-373. If the Federal was Army communications equipment from the 50s, the u373 was a hydrogen bomb. There's no other compressor like it that was ever made. The left most three settings are your nukes and the right most three are dual time constants.

I use the UAD a lot. It sounds just like my hardware Fairchilds.

Waves Puigchild 670. The attack isn't awful which is rare for a modeled waves plug. The low end doesn't sound like tubes. It sounds digital but it sounds cool. Better than digital pedals but it can be harsh. The m/s compression on this is nice but it doesn't have the widest image. No distorted guitars and the upper mids are just weird. Is the push just audible aliasing? DDMF Magic Death Eye Stereo. This sounds great seawell . Super gelled. The oversampling is minimum phase thus unusable on any thing with upper treble. You get weird phase shifted cymbals and guitar hash. Gross. Non-oversampled, this is killer and just makes stuff sound slightly better. I dig it but it's very modern in a good way. The oversampling is useless and harmful. There's no m/s compression either, only EQ, so it's not really what I'm looking for. PSP OldTimer ME. This is dense and pushed at the same time. Wow. This is like a calmer version of Puigchild with better, softer timings. The lows are saturated slightly and the entire background is pushed forward and to the sides. Old Timer is less "guitar processor" than the Puigtec. MJUC narrows the image and brings out the bass a ton. It needs a low shelf before or after it. Mk I is the thickest. Pulsar MU. Not a fan. The attack is kinda clicky and gross. You can't dig in really the middle. Oversampling killed my CPU. Overloud Gem Comp 670. This was subtle but sounds pretty good. The three models all sound different. The oversampling was like the DDMF Magic Death Eye Stereo so again minimum phase and harmful. The m/s compression is great but it can leave gaps. The GUI and VU meter suck. The needle oscillates like crazy. This can get really wide, causing big gaps in a diffuse image. I went with the Old Timer ME because it widened the stereo image slightly without creating gaps like the Overloud or a gross high end like Waves.

One that hasn't been mentioned is the IK Dyna Mu, I think it's really quite nice, one of the fancier IK plugins. It gets pretty pumpy and vibey and has a lot of color if you want it.

Slate VCC for the high mid tonal lift, but not for the compression. MJUC Mk1 for the mu compressor action. It's not exactly a Fairchild and I don't think that was the intent, and that's ok with me.
