I haven't tried the Manley. It was never really on my radar. I have a Blue Woodpecker that is a bit like that. Extended high end, but ribbon smoothness. Sounded fantastic on Sax. but the U67 ended up winning that fight. lol. Haven't tried the Woodpecker. Manley Reference cardiod is unique. Not sure I can compare it to anything. Maybe a C12 but its not like that at all. Bright. Articulate. But smooth. Its what I'd call a "feature vocal" mic... Usually it either works and sounds amazing or is a total dud. Not very universal like an 87/67/414 where it just sorta gets along with everyone. Maybe not what your looking for but IMO its worth a spin if you come across one.

Haven't tried the Woodpecker. If you can find one for under $800, SNAP IT UP! As they've been discontinued, they are getting increasingly difficult to find. I had two, but sold one to a friend in need. They really are great microphones and sound so very pleasant!

Anyone using and having luck with any TLM these days?
Since first posting this thread some years ago, I've only tried the TLM 102.
Thinking of trying the TLM 107 next, because I can't know without trying it for myself. I'd like a cleaner general purpose alternative to the U87 Ai.

TLM170 is the best Neumann mic in production.

I bought a TLM 49 a few months ago. It's a little lean in the low mids, which makes it a much better match for my voice over the TLM 67 I had previously. And I run it through an AEA RPQ 2 which is a great combo for me! Cool mic that I read a lot of negative things about on the purple site, and great things elsewhere. My hunch is the negative stuff was from people expecting it to sound like the M 49.

I rented a TLM 67 for a couple months and in retrospect it sounded fantastic. I thought I sounded good at the time but I didn't really appreciate it until I went back and listened to the recordings a couple years later vs my usual gear.

The transformer versus non-TF being the most obvious difference.

I can only speak to my experience with the two - I had a U87ai with the v4 daughter board, the one that nobody likes. I found it to be a good microphone for my voice but it was quite sibilant on me. I thought perhaps a TLM67 would tame that sibilance and it did, but it also ended up being cloudy in the lower mids in cardioid, which is another problematic area for my voice, and it could get a touch hairy sometimes. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there is a built-in distortion circuit to emulate the U67's tube, which is why I would not call it cleaner than the U87ai. It may be more linear, but not cleaner.
