Exactly. Isn't that what this thread is all about? The purpose of the shootout is to compare vintage clones so that RGO members can get a sense of where the Serrano 87 lives and how it may compare in the mix to other mics. On another voice I may have easily liked the Stam 67 better. Here I prefer the Serrano, and not because I'm some newbie who thinks brighter is better. It inspired me more. Yes it is. Some people like Carlo's 87 better on Mark's voice, some like my 67 better, it's subjective and a matter of taste. I am OK and happy with that. I also make an 87 and 87+, I know how great these mics can sound. I am OCD when it comes to matching vintage mics and I would be sadden to see my work undone to get rid of the one thing that separates a 67 from other microphones. That is why I commented. He has posted other clips of the 67 I made for him on here and it has gotten a lot of praise because how magical it sounds on his voice. I hope Mark keeps it that way. Just my 0.2 Wow... Both sound comparably wonderful now, though a bit different. Are you keeping both Mark? The Stam does sound a little more Vintage, and the Serrano just a little more Modern. Both sound "like a record" though. Again, terrific singing. Thanks, Chris Thanks, Chris! I am *definitely* keeping both the Stam and the Serrano. I’m beginning to wonder if I should hold onto the Soyuz or not, though I like it better here than most folks on the thread seem to. It’s an interesting in-between sound: more muscular than the Serrano, clearer than the Stam. But, I could always sell it and pick up another Serrano to have a pair. Hmmmmm... I really like the Soyuz on your voice, though it is pretty 'meh' on guitar.

I like the Serrano examples best. Part of it is because I feel it does not have a obvious sound to me as a listener and therefore does not distract me from the performance.
On the first example acoustic guitars sound a bit more present, maybe brighter on the Serrano clips which contribute to why I like this better. The mix between guitars and vocals sounds more balanced to my ears. I don't know if this is solely mic difference or a tiny difference in mic placement or volume coming in?

IMHO another cool mic comparison would be between... Serrano 87/Bees Neez 87/UT 47FET. Partly due to similar price range. Chris

Way cool. IMHO Ben nailed the U87 vintage "old timey" sound, from what I've heard so far. Not necessarily "better", than the other two, but definitely somewhat different.
I'm real curious how the RGO members, like Drumsound and Dr. Bill, would evaluate that kind of "87" comparison. Shoot, we could even throw in the "U87-ish" 3U MKI Warbler-if possible. Chris

Trying to pull more into tube mics, but I've probably done more records on my classic 87 than all other mics I've ever owned combined. Always sounds great to me.

AFAIK the "usual" Philly Soul mic, was the U87i. Am listening to a lot of Classic Spinners songs right now, for vocal practice. Largely due to their co-lead vocalist, Bobby Smith's (RIP) smooth style of delivery. (suits mine very well). And of course, their awesome harmonies... Chris P.S. I don't "connect" as well, with the U87ai. Prefer the "darker" 87 styles.

Thanks for asking Jesse! Yeah, he shattered his R Tibia up into the knee. He's doing better. 3 surgeries down, two to go in the future. But he's up, walking, and trying to start a new job. Doing much better than last summer. <thumbsup>

Could be. We certainly have some of the same interests, erm, I mean passions, uh....ok - addictions.

The U87 is a later one and the U87ai is the first year of production and they sound so similar ( except for difference in output volume)that you could easily punch in from one to the other and would be hard pressed to find the change.

Around 3G's in the states. Being a dual citizen, American dad, canadian/Brit mom, I'm cross-border constantly except for March 2020 - now. But we all trade in hard currency, be that USD EUR YEN or chinese YWN.

Looking back at my Reverb history, it looks like I paid 2700 for mine. Great shape. Newer box, no shock mount. A week or so ago I saw one in similar condition, with the box and mount listed for 3999. If I could get close to that for mine I’d consider selling, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen!

Seems like even the U87ai prices are going up. Makes me think long and hard about hanging onto mine just in case I ever have a financial emergency since i only paid $1500 for it.

the other mark williams more importantly than the mics, your voice is beautiful and the song and production are excellent. Nice work. I liked the Serrano on guitars and the Stam on the vocal.
