As soon as they re-design the looks of it, I'm certainly picking one up.
Yeah. The looks of the Lewitt really deter me ALOT. Looks like something that would be on Darth Vader's belt in the worst possible way. I prefer my mics to look like a piece of scrap from the Millenium Falcon. YES! You can almost hear the heavy breathing when looking at it!!!! I own other Lewitts and they are seriously classy sounding. For some reason, they decided to go with neon green and glowy tubes in the recent iterations -- WTF?? Don't let that deter you from the less expensive units. They are all kick-arse!

I've got one of those "Mid Production Run/McKay" 319's that falls within Michael Joly's evaluation, years ago. (the 219 has a very bright capsule-for a 219) Where he thought a 219/319, with one of the better/darker capsules, sounded the closest to a Neumann 47 capsule (at that time). It's fine (for now ), to put the brakes on a 47 FET style acquisition. Once you hit the Signal Arts and Heiserman level though... You can hear how those are further refined. IMHO this 319 is at/near comparable, to the Warm WA-47. Nice, but probably not quite as nice objectively. But great for raspy style vocals. Chris

Yep, the Lewitt mics are something I'd be embarrassed to be seen with.

Total aside, but how’s the Lewitt 440? I’ve got a hobbyist friend who’s looking for an LDC with max price of $300...

<grain of salt> I think everything below the 640 is using the same capsule....certainly could be wrong here...and its the electronics that differ. </grain of salt>

I’d like to hear a Lewitt next to an Austrian Audio and my 414.

I’d like to hear a Lewitt next to an Austrian Audio and my 414. Yes! Me too!
I think you'd probably have to go with the higher priced Lewitts to truly compete against those models -- but that Lewitt 440 is a bargain at the going price.
I really like my pair of 540S. I've heard samples of the 440 and it's definitely playing on the same field as the 540S.

Non-tube Lewitt and Austrian Audio's, are brighter than 414 Brass capsule or B-ULS.
SE T2 is also less bright. (I also like AT4050's BTW)
So...The "tube" Lewitt's are better for sibilant singers like me. Maybe for Mark's friend too! Chris P.S. Rode NT1 (black) is a nice alternative to the Lewitt 440, if sibilance is an issue.

Cool. Two of my "jaw drops" were...
Hearing Tim's capsule, in the FLEA 12. And hearing both an original Brass capsule, and the reproduction capsule Eric Heiserman put in the otherwise matching vintage 414.
What's weird to me is the other two Clones 251's I've tried (T-Funk/Warm)... Didn't match my voice as well. Only the darker Bock 251, did as well. Chris

I watched one of Warren Huart's videos about the Lewitt 440 - the one where he does an entire song with every single part recorded with the same 440. I enjoy watching Warren's videos. I think he strikes a nice balance between quality and big picture.
Nevertheless, I really didn't like how the 440 sounded. It was just too bright for my taste. My ears got fatigued.
I don't know if that's how they are in the real world, and I don't know how they respond to a darker pre or some EQ roll off on top, but at least in that one example, I would've preferred an AT3035.

I remember the Huart video using a single 540S on an entire song -- is that the one you're talking about? Anyway, that was one example that helped sell me on that mic -- funny, huh?! I thought the drums were fantastic, and liked the acoustic guitar too, although it was mic'd too close for me. Also, I don't like condensors on amps, but it's a one mic video so...
That's a mic that, I think, is made for the mid/far field -- not close-micing of acoustic instruments. The low noise makes it sound closer than it really is, allowing one to pull the mic back further, decreasing the brightness, and capture the full range of the instrument while still sounding close. I'm dying to try them on piano.

No, the one I’m talking about was definitely the 440 PURE. It certainly sounded clear, and it didn’t sound hyped up top, it was just brighter than I prefer. I actually couldn’t listen to the whole song.

Hey Chase, I have an ADK GK-12d that I sing into religiously in my main microphone. It was a tiny bit bright so I rolled off a little air band in the amplifier, just a little. I love this mic!
I am extremely curious about the ADK GK-251d but I haven't got one here yet.

I have an RMS269 (so did Vincent at one point) - IMO, they both "look" and "sound" great. Just my opinion though...... I know nothing of the Cathedral Pipes.
