I'm gonna side with Nick, DrB, Brice et al. The U87 is an incredibly useful mic on many sources. Part of what makes it great is how it fits into a mix, or production. In solo it's rare that it sounds like the greatest thing you've ever heard, but when the whole track is playing so often it just works. It one of my 2 favorite percussion mics (shakers, tambourines, etc) can be super cool on clean electric guitar. Often works for 'non-feature' acoustic guitar. Mono overhead (I've only got one) see some use around my place. I generally don't give a shit about 'matching mics to preamps' that seems to be the rage the last 10-15 years, but my biggest exception to that rule is the U87 on vocals. I had a VoxBox for years and did a boatload of singers with the 87 and the VB. Then I got rid of it and some of my romance with the 87 went with it. Even the very nice Aurora GTQ2 that replaced the VB didn't excite me with the 87. It still worked, but some of the 'special' was gone. Last year I got a Useful Arts SFP60 tube pre, and it and the 87 are getting along swimingly! I mentioned this to a friend who has a similar vintage U87 to mine and his comment was "yeah, 87s seem to love tubes." I use my 87 with an SFP30 and I love it as well! Seems to be a great combo! Yeah, they pair well. Its not a surprise, I believe Useful starts with a V72 type circut and built from there. I'm gonna side with Nick, DrB, Brice et al. for those following, I'm "et al" by the way. Indeed you are. I was trying to type and get out of here to go mix. Deepest apologies.

Yeah one of these days I’m going to have to come north and we are going to have to do a record together. You know you'd be welcome!

I've done two sessions now with the Serrano 87 on vocals. Its addicting. I have never used a real 87 before so I can't compare to that. But- theres a vocal sound Ive been chasing for years, and apparently its the sound of a Serrano 87. Highly recommended!

I haven't thrown up the direct comparisons to my old ones yet, but I can tell you the S87 is very very very very close to the 1973.

Ward - could use my vintage 87 and the Serrano on drum overs and be happy - matching wise?
I don't immagine the head basket pops out like a vintage version does it?

The GAS is real. The Dachman kits are slated to ship soon too, very interesting right now in this U87 zone.

Interesting, how would you describe the sonic differences between those 3 sets of years from you experience Ward ?

That was a GREAT year. My 73 is one of the best 87's I've used.

And nope, nothing to do with headbasket... the S87 is a bigger and different housing to the U87. At first this was offputting, but I got over it and let my ears deal with my judgment. mike asked about differences . . . I always find this kind of difficult to qualify as we all hear things slightly differently, so this is from my POV only, as there are as many who hear like me as those who don't. I have come to accept that and left the battle of "can't you hear that, you moron??" 68-70 slightly brighter or on the teeth, but not in an AI way 71 a strong correction to the above, in Neumann terms, slight in others but I hear it. The teeth are much softer 73 is my absolute favorite. It's just so perfectly balanced yet retains the 87's bite, exemplify's that bite and seems to have maybe 0.3db more lower mid body than everything up to the mid 70s. But not in a muddy way. In a U47 FET way. If you use one all the time, you'll know what I mean and it's the FET's tonal signature.

I have a late 60’s/early 70’s, not entirely sure 87. All I know is that it was converted from a Tuchel connector. It definitely has a little bite to it, especially on vox. It’s not a bad thing at all, but it’s there. Seems to react really different depending on the pre I use. My bae312’s tend to darken it a bit, while my useful arts tube pre really brings out the bite. Actually, when I use a phantom power supply with my electric and co ampex, it’s by far my favorite acoustic sound. Just really 3D and pretty. I’m very tempted to pick up a Serrano and see how it compares. Based on sound samples, they are the closest “clone” I’d heard yet.
