I'm trying to fill out my mic preamp rack and need six more channels. I thought I would start with four and then get the last two later when I have more money.
What I have so far: (4) Hardy M1 (4) Daking (8) Midas XL48 (2) Presonus MP20 w/Jensen
I'm using an Aurora 16 with the Midas coming in as AES to give me 24 channels. I don't have anything in the Neve flavor or API but I think I won't be able to find four channels of either of those for that kind of money.
Possible? Black Lion B12A - sort of API? Warm WA-412 something used?
I'd also thought about getting into 500 series, but the initial investment is pretty high.
What are your thoughts?

Warm was the first thing that came to mind. Fits your budget perfectly and will definitely get you into API territory. I had the single channel a few years back and it was great for the price.

My opinion is you’re naming a price point that makes it tough to upgrade—kinda like hoping for a great acoustic guitar for 1k when all that does is stick you in no man’s land. Why not add one or two channels of quality pres and build over time? 500 series is great for that, especially if you can build kits such as CAPI or Hairball.

Thanks for the info on the Warm. Sadly, "great for the price" is starting to become a sore spot with me. I've had so much gear that was great for the price and then I want something better. For instruments, I started only buying things that were simply great, at any price. I might be hoping for too much at only $1k. Maybe I should rethink the purchase? I'd hate to buy something to fill the space, just to have to sell it and buy something better in a few years. Ugh. Buying and being content with purchases is never easy. :-)

I hear ya. I've definitely been down that route as well, usually ending up with the nicer piece that I should've bought to begin with.
In that case, why not save for something a little more high end — maybe a Phoenix DRS8? That would give you 8 channels of something kinda Neve-ish. You'd be set on mic pres for a good while.

I saw that BLA B173 as well. I'm not sure how any of their stuff sounds. They have got pretty big in recent years but I still don't know who uses their products. maybe someone here can chime in.

4x capi vp25 kits and a used lunchbox. Alctron sold a small lunchbox at one time but I can't find it anymore.

The Vintage Audio M12 are pretty amazing... One of those brands that would probably become favorites around RGO if Vintage was more active in marketing themselves.

Yeah I tried the Warm 412 and for me it didn't hang with my other preamps ( Heritage 1073s, Tree Audio, Capi VP28 and Heiders) so I would pass on that. You can get the 4 channel Dav for that price but I would pass, particularly if you want color.

Thanks for the option idea. I'm checking them out.

This is outstanding option too (I have one myself)! And there are various flavors to choose from as well for op-amps, transformers, etc.

The DAV BG2 is great at any price. It’s on the clean side but not bland or boring. I’m never selling mine.

If you’re lucky you can a used Sebatron vmp-4 on eBay or reverb. They’re top notch and you don’t have any tube Pres so they compliment what you already have well.

Sytek. They're only available used, but usually hovering around the $600. area. Very good pres regardless of price. I love mine.

I love mine. -09 I had to sell mine several years back and right afterwards they stopped making them. I missed them until I found the IAA which sort of fills the same cleanish affordable gap for me. But everything I tracked with the Sytek was easy to mix. Everything was just "there". Live and learn.

Capi. If I could go back and rebuild my studio from scratch I would have just used those. I have BAE 312’s right now that I got used, but Capi are just great solid pres.

CAPI. Double your budget and go VP28. Or just get 2x then add 2x later.
