OK I may be reading between the lines a bit here so correct me if I’m wrong, you have a nice collection of slightly colored pres and would like something a little less subtle, you figure a 4 ch will save some coin vs 4 separate pres. You also really want to jump into the classics.
I love the Sytek / Neotek, bargain as far as what you can do, hell ask Nobtwiddler about how disappointed Butch Vig was to hear he was getting his drum tone from a Neotek and not a Neve, but I’ll put the Sytek in the same camp as almost everything you have only different shading.
For around a $1K you could get into 4 ch of the budget clones, Warm or Golden Age, sure they are in the API and Neve Camps, but again looking at your current collection I’m betting you would be happy for about a month. These things are not built like what you have and won’t quite get you where you want to be.
Given the above I’m going to parrot most of the others: Iron Age or CAPI. Both are going to give you the classic tone you know and love. Both are built as well as your current inventory, both come from guys who are about tone not getting rich. Jeff and Matt will both work with you to get you what you want.
Your toughest choices are do you want 500 or rack? DIY or not?
I’ll admit I consider both Matt and Jeff friends, but both relationships start at the same point I appreciate good gear and the guys behind it.

I'd personally rather put money in a pocket of someone who visits here and participates than a company mass producing in China. Iron Age, CAPI, Locomotive, Audioscape, Louder Than Liftoff (I'm sure many others too). Let's all help each other out!

I think you guys are right. If I buy something that just fills the space, I will probably want to get rid of it sooner than later. I am leaning towards the Iron Age or Capi at this point. I'm very good at soldering and building so the Capi does not intimidate me. I think I need to save a little more money before I can pull the trigger.

I have both. All=killer.

The best thing about my CAPi vp28’s is I don’t have to think about them...I just through them on whatever...start recording, and it sounds good. Period.

Can warmly recommend what you get for your money CAPI VP26. Has 6 pieces in a lunch box with red dot. Has served me well for a long time. My next step is to fix what Tbone81 mentioned. A lunch box with 10 VP28 pieces

How about the Audient ASP880 8 pres, variable hpf and impedance on each channel, plus inserts on each channel, punchy sound and will also do conversion. Fits the budget.

Sytek. They're only available used, but usually hovering around the $600. area. Very good pres regardless of price. I love mine. -09 +1. Sold mine a couple months ago for $600. Never had an issue and sounded great. Just had too many preamps!! LIES. There is no such thing as "too many preamps". Did your sytek have two channels with the burr-brown op-amps?

I like the BB channels on piano actually. -09

I remember wishing it actually didn't have them, and that all 4 channels were consistent.
