Speaking of KM84 replacements, was there anything resembling a consensus here regarding the 3U 127 flat? At $250 it's tempting.

I sold my pair of mint 56’s last year but now have 2 84’s which generally get more use on more sources. Also like many here love the Soyuz 0-13. For something different I recently became a fan of beyer m160’s on acoustics through a nice tube pre and eq. Very old thread here but looking for some info on the M160’s on acoustic - I’ve been LOVING how they sound on acoustic guitar but struggling to get enough gain without lots of preamp noise. Are you using the m160’s as your main mic on acoustic or is it a quieter blend along with a more sensitive mic? Thanks!

I'm curious what answers might rise to the top for the question; What would your mic choice(s) be for acoustic guitar, if you can't use a KM84 ?
One Schoeps cmc641. One MArtin D28S. regards, Ty Ford Hey, this is cool

Another vote for the Beyer MC 930's. Excellent value for money and a real workhorse around here. Have a matched pair running into a John Hardy M1 and they sound lovely on acoustic instruments. I really like the presence peak these have at around 11K so they're not harsh and give a nice airy lift to the source. Highly recommended.

What preamp are you using? I’m using a racked pm1000 with a cloudlifter! Cloudlifters aren’t the quietest preamp out there, but they’re not terrible, either. I don’t know the PM1000 from personal experience, so can’t say for sure if your problem is mic related or preamp related. If you had the ability to test your mic with something like the AEA RPQ2, that’d be your tell.

Going to try and track down an AEA pre!

I did go straight into the Apollo pres and they were considerably quieter (didn’t start getting noisy until about 50db of gain) so it’s looking like it’s just my preamp situation

Never used an 84. But I love my Beyerdynamic mc930s a lot.

I’ll echo Jacob’s choice of the Beyerdynamic MC930s. Great mics.

Echo chamber...MC930 is usually what I go for but that other 930, the Gefell M 930 has been nice for me as it picks up the woody sound of my Martin D-15M. When I call out, "Hey, 930, ready for duty" they both turn around, so now they just go by the monikers "Skinny and Fatty".

Love a KM84.
Have gotten great and similar enough results with Beesneez Lulu FET, Samar MG20 and the Peluso tube SDC.

I think the happiest I’ve been with an acoustic guitar recording I’ve done has been with the Samar VL37a.

I own/love an 84 but would never spend today's prices on another. I also have a Beesneez Arabella so know they can make a killer mic and the price on the Lulu is great.

I’ve never had the km84s I came up with (they live at a studio that I haven’t booked in a few years) and my Lulu in the same room. All I can say is it just does the thing on acoustic guitar and I don’t really think about it. If I did a project using both interchangeably, I’d forget over time and probably not be able to tell you which was which unless it was a really really spare arrangement, and even then I’m not sure.

Recently chose an Oktava mc012 over all my Neumann 84s with an old Martin D28.
Darker, meatier and just fit better.

Joly modded Oktava sdc.
I like the AT 4033 on acoustic as well but I haven’t pulled it out in quite a while because it has a wonky shockmount. Should get that fixed.
Cheers, Geoff

Having owned both the Lulu's are not the same as a Km84. Sold them pretty quick as they did not add anything extra. even tried the tube verison but that was meh ! I did think the Samar MG20 was interesting enough to keep I liked its focused quiet sound. The Serrano 84 sounded way closer to the KM84 then the Lulu. The Mc930 are always a nice option. If you wanted something on the cheap side the Warbler 127 flat are decent - boring sounding - but decent. I was also surprised by the ATM450 side address mic. Its a little crunchy on the top but it does well when not pushed too hard and fits in tight spaces.

As far as pencils go, the AKG 460s are a slept on gem. Super natural and clean! I was blown away the first time I set them up on a piano! Not as hyped, but for that reason they keep you out of trouble imo
