I agree with Ward I did a dynamic mic shootout and the MD441 was at the very top for acoustic guitar, for me. 421 was pretty good too. RE20 can also work. Didn't really like the Shures for this purpose.

If you're really determined to use a dynamic in place of a KM84, then you really should consider a 441. True, it's super cardioid so your placement matters more, but it is the only dynamic that truly rivals the gorgeous capture of the KM84, on-axis. Dynamic? It's a dyna-MIC What pre do you use it with? I always find it a bit dark compared to Beyers on acoustic. Dark? Well, this is a first for me. With the presence switch and the 5 position bass roll-off, you can certainly un-darken it. I use it with a Focusrite 428 Mark 1, typically Although I've also used it through my Grace

They have some at a studio I track at and they use them on toms/snares and kicks, I wonder if they're just old and tired but yeah I always find them super dark.

I shot out about 15 sdcs with my buddy at Soundpure.... Josephson c617 killed everything on fingerpicked stuff. Otherwise cmc6 , DPA 4011, or oktava. Everything else was meh.

Well I'd say a Km56 kills just about anything on an acoustic. An Ela M251, M269, Sennheiser mkh series and even a U87 are really good

Like the 54, magical in a sparse mix or solo listening but in context of a dense mix? Still can't top the 84. And honestly, I'll take an 84 over anything in any application. Unless it's a 414 modded with a wonderful TC12 capsule!!

Thinking of those nickel capsule Km56, 54, 88's, I'd be interested in hearing feedback on the nickel capsule Microtech Gefell M295 from anyone who's tried one ?

Had a pair of M295's on a grand piano in a rock context, sounded good. Both bright and smooth.

However the KM54 was hard to beat on mandolin and often found itself in front of a banjo.

But I DO have a KM84 - two of 'em now!

Then I would have to ask what preamp you paired the KM56 with. In my own use through a Neve or a Calrec preamp the 56 would win, through our SSL probably the 84. I would imagine through an API or Focuseite the 84's linearity would win.

I used an M295 on my 1960 Hummingbird reissue for this song that I am working on. drumsound will recognize the part. Here is the raw track into a Daking mic pre with a bit of high pass as the only processing drive.google.com/file/d/1YTCh0eFKFok_D7yDXLA27MsILLQxaXgJ/view?usp=drivesdk

I need to get into the Gefell world some day. Its kind of funny that you're using a Hummingbird, because it seems like a ALWAYS like Gibson acoustics and wonder why they don't get more love.

They always sound a little choked to me...finish? I used one for an album once and found string choices made a difference.

I'm curious what answers might rise to the top for the question; What would your mic choice(s) be for acoustic guitar, if you can't use a KM84 ?
Schoeps CMC641. Regards, Ty Ford

Monday it’s a female singer guitarist I’ve worked with before, and the song probably works best with both performed live. Samar MF-65 won the vocal shootout before, so putting a pair in the Blumlein mount and using that for max vcl/gtr separation. Setting a native B format array of MKH20/30/30 back a bit for ambient capture, turned 90 degrees so ambisonic panning is up/down for vcl versus gtr steering, so WXZ leaving out Y. Might crash and burn, we’ll see!

I sold my pair of mint 56’s last year but now have 2 84’s which generally get more use on more sources. Also like many here love the Soyuz 0-13. For something different I recently became a fan of beyer m160’s on acoustics through a nice tube pre and eq.
