Do you own one? What model? How is it on vocals? I own one. Its fantastic. Dark, smooth, and rich. To compare I've owned Fatheads, currently own a pair of AEA n22's, and regularly use Coles 4038's. On vocals the Shinybox is simply gorgeous. I have to check which model. Edit: I own the 46mxc

I have two from years ago -- upgraded them with Lundahl trannies and Jon (at Shinybox) swapped the ribbons for the thinner size (1.2 microns, I think) that matched the tranny. They are, essentially, the 46MXL version. They were great until I accidentally stretched the ribbons -- my 3 year old (at time) was responsible for one accident. I still need to get them fixed. It was a long time ago.
I don't remember using them on vox. I liked them on string instruments (e.g., violin/fiddle, dobro).
On a different note... I'm not an expert, but in my modding experience, ribbon mics come down to three things: 1. ribbon length 2. ribbon thickness 3. transformer: the transformer must be optimized for the ribbon (based on the ribbon's thickness and length)
Any mics that spec the same probably sound the same.
I need a ribbon mic that is less sensitive to my mishandlings -- and doesn't cost as much as the Shure (Crowley/Tripp).

B&O/Royer types are brighter, larger open basket like classic RCA or Fatheads roll off earlier.

I love my Cascades....I have a short ribbon Fathead II Lundahl and a VIN-Jet Lundahl long ribbon. FH rules on guitar cabs. I like the Fathead that I have on amps. It's the original non-Lundahl version. When I get the Stagers, my intention is to primarily use them as OHs, when I don't want a condenser sound. So I guess my question about under $500 ribbons should further be refined by saying that I would be looking to use these under $500 ribbons primarily on guitar/bass amps, room mics, and piano, in that order of importance. I have a original FH. Have not used it much, but it's pretty good on cabs.l

Thanks -- I think it's me and my foolish attempts at using them for live/stage that causes the problems. They just get beat-up over time and the ribbon starts to sag. Certainly not a build issue with the Shinybox's.

Anybody have sound samples of the Bumblebee RM5 or RM6 on drums? I'm debating selling my AEA n22's...I got them for a steal and wouldn't mind a side-ways move with some coin in my pocket.

Anybody have sound samples of the Bumblebee RM5 or RM6 on drums? I'm debating selling my AEA n22's...I got them for a steal and wouldn't mind a side-ways move with some coin in my pocket. When we first got a pair of N22’s I couldn’t stand them. They were too anemic and I didn’t like their top end which was not typically ribbon smooth. I realise they were designed for close miking without the excessive proximity effect typical of ribbons but my feeling was if that was an issue then use a different type of mic. Then when the N8’s came out I worked out the difference between those and the N22’s. The N22 has a perforated tube which covers the ribbon motor assembly and acts as an acoustic high pass filter and also appears to act as high frequency resonance booster due to reflections within the tube resulting in an upper frequency enhancement. However this may be due more to some comb filtering which is possibly the reason I didn’t like the top end of the N22’s. Anyway after dismantling the N22 which revealed the perforated tube I carefully slid it off the ribbon motor (it is just a press fit) and ‘Voila’ the mic then sounded bigger, smoother and almost certainly on par with the N8. Also this mod is easily reversible.

Thanks for bringing them up. Alas, after 15 years, I'm putting the 46 series to rest. I have no future plans to build new 46MXC, 46MXL, or 46U microphones. Regards Jon
