What mics are these?
Specifically what the vocalist/ pianist is using. I’ve seen mics with red bodies like this before a few times, can’t remember exactly where, and wondered what they are. Given that this is German tv, I d guess German or Austrian, but that’s just a guess. And, has anybody here used them? If so, thoughts? Cheers, Geoff

While not answering my question, a bit of googling around found This which has some info on vintage mics. Cheers, Geoff

And here is Rory Gallagher, also from the Beat Club show around the same time period with what look to be the same mics. Rory

Don't know what the red ones are. The mic on the rack toms is an AKG.

DOn't know what mics they are or if they're responsible, but possibly the best way to screw up a live vocal sound or piano sound I've heard on German TV. Normally German TV had awesome sound. These look like some of the cheaper Beyer mics from back in the day. And on top fo that, I really don't like them - just to remove all doubt so Johnkenn doesn't accuse me of being vague.

I’m seriously wondering if the music was recorded at some gig and the mics are prop shop mics.

Given how distinctive they are, and how they have so far stumped the RGO, that well may be. Or something made just for the Beat Club show. I’m trying to remember if I’ve seen them anywhere else, but honestly, I’m not sure.

I feel like someone mentioned a European mic that looked similar to that in grey recently. Maybe MBHO or something. That singer in Procol Harem does have an amazing voice.

Yeah I quite liked that Procol tune. Pretty sure I fist saw these mics on the Rory stuff, and when the PH thing came across my screen I thought, I’ve seen those mics before somewhere. And went back and looked at Rory on the Beat Club, and there they were. They are distinctive enough that they stuck in my brain. But, what are they? Curious, I am.

Just came across this Beat Club performances from the early 70s
72 seems to be the year they had everybody using these. Ray Davies is clearly singing into one. But no sign of them with Fotheringay from 70 or Stevie Wonder in 74. I remain in the dark as to who made them though. Cheers, Geoff

Actually they look like they could be some early version of the Sennheiser MKE46 but I wouldn't swear on it. Germany has had many small mic manufacturers, Strasser, MB, RFT, etc.

Yeah does look a bit like the Senn. The ribbed bit almost looks like it is made of rubber or something. Definitely looks like something that could be slipped over another mic body. I haven’t done a compare/contrast with what they were using before these showed up. Might if I get bored enough.

Although no matches for the Beat Club red bodied mic, this site Cool old mics has pics and a bit of info of mostly old mics from a variety of mic makers. Fun time waster. Cheers, Geoff

Sennheiser MD200 or MD400 have similarities, but not it.

Nope. Not quite there. More and more I’m thinking the red bit is a jacket over an existing mic. With a matching red clip. A bit of bling for tv. Can’t find examples not on the Beat Club.
Cheers, Geoff

Cheers, Geoff Yeah, could just be 431's or similar with a jacket. Tangential related evidence: there's a bunch of pics from CBS radio Chicago in the 1940's, stars and announcers posing with RCA 77-C's that have completely different grills. Customized for some reason; they are more heavy duty and maybe less easily dinged.

Cheers, Geoff Yeah, could just be 431's or similar with a jacket. If it isn’t something like that Im coming to the conclusion that there may just be a half dozen or so of these made specifically for the Beat Club. Cheers, Geoff
