Thanks John. (you know me-at first I was tempted to say "Costello?" I really like that Elvis (and Frank) SOP was to record with the whole band and/or orchestra, back up singers, etc. Chris

I frickin love 635s... I have one that was permanently installed outside to capture crowd noise in a college football stadium... for at least 20 years. Still works totally fine! EV mics are under rated in general IMO

My Mic technique is mediocre at best. And that's probably an exaggeration! BTW David Bock himself, told me to get better with that, and quit relying on Compression so much. Well now I have a bit more time, To improve that... Chris Taking the time to learn how to work the mic is probably one of the best way to pass this time of isolation.

I got into at first by watching old Elvis videos - he was really good at it.
Yes. I’ve had multiple singers lately that have required syllable level volume automation, dynamic EQ, and overall compression to even out dynamics, make them less ‘stabby’ to the ear. EQ automation on some sections too. None right up on the mic. One had benefit of two different mics, and I resorted to swapping mics on certain sections to control that which multiple processing layers was not. It feels crazy to spend 1.5-2 hours per song on vocal processing AFTER comping a performance. It’s as much driven by a ‘need’ for every single syllable to be audible over everything else, at all times, with no allowance for natural implied contextual interpretation. There’s a reason they made Bing Crosby a star.....

Do keep in mind learning how to work a natural Omni like a 635 is going to be very different from most mics.

Don’t forget the linearity of off axis response, a great vocalist who really knows the mic they are working can use it to their advantage on all the cardiod derivatives. It can also kill the performance of those who don’t.

Hmm... Wasn't "Cardiod Derivatives" that 90's Emo-Punk group? BTW my understanding was that both John Lennon, and The Temptations (per Otis Williams) were big fans of the "Old Groaner" AKA Bing. Contrast this to today, when many of "the kids" (under 30), don't even know who he was! And who was Bing (and Jackie Wilson BTW) a BIG fan of... Al Jolson. Talk about "audience connection". Chris

LOL! And they'd too busy on their cell phone to notice! Surely you guys know the issue is "Cultural Enrichment". Including having the Kids, learn to appreciate the Arts. What's funny is that when I was teaching Classes, doing School "Demos" of our Chess Program Afterchool. I'd throw in a bit of Classic Rock or Classic Soul singing, and a lot of kids really liked-even loved those songs. (despite my best singing efforts! ) Chris P.S. What I noticed is that the Generation, who grew up on later Metal ala Metallica etc... Were not as "into" 60's 70's stuff. But even Darius defected from Alt/Rock Grunge and got into Country Music!

Just messin' around with EV 635a again into Launcher. Main chain difference is adding MJUCjr Compression, on these brief vocal phrases. Same two phrases repeated. Chris

Chris What Chris have you been watching all the news channels and see everybody with a bunch of RE50’s in their face and think “ man I got to bring out the 635a.” I do wonder if anyone at the current EV realizes how much all the networks pay to advertise EV, and yes I miss those dollars.

Chris I love everything about the 635 except the sound. To quote the guy down the street’s girlfriend “ haters gonna hate”. I do get it, but remember for most it isn’t really the sound of 635a that everyone loves, it’s the gateway mic to the magic linearity of Omni in a single diaphragm. Are there better? Well hell yeah, but not for $50 used pre pandemic.

My good Buddy (Chuck Norris) simply stares at the 635a. Till it gives him what he wants. (Sorry all you Neumanns out there) Chris
