Yes! Old EV dynamics are a secret weapon from the 70 ‘s and 80’s. Something people tend to forget these days (if they ever knew) is that those old EVs were designed for broadcast purposes. They're all over those old TV video clips. |

Thanks guys! Honestly, I trust the judgement of each one of you... More than me!  Much appreciated. BTW I went back to the example I posted above, used a couple of Bob O's suggestions in the past on EQing the EV635a... (boosted 200Hz a few db/boosted around 10KHz a few db) And it did sound somewhat better, as a result. Chris |

I think it sounds nice. I'm not sure I would call it a detailed sound though but that's not a problem.
Most of the stuff I record is on the rootsy side of things I'd say and I've noticed that often times I would track with a large condenser, end up cutting the lows and highs a bit and smoothing out the transients and it would end up in the mix sounding pretty similar to what I get straight out of the box with a nice dynamic...
I think EV mics are the best. THE 635a, RE 15-16 are all great for vocals and acoustic guitar, overheads.

Thanks! BTW I noticed in some of the pictures of Pete Townshend's "home  demo studio"... He was using a RE16 for vocals. Huge fan of his 60's/70's demos, that would later be done, by the whole Who Band. Sometimes I enjoy Pete's demos as much-or more! And I love The Who. IMHO the AKG D790 I sometimes use, is a bit "condenser-ish"/more detailed. As it's of the neodymium type. But I have strong low-mids, in my voice nowadays. So have to watch out for that in vocal processing later, and adjust accordingly. Chris |

Don't know that mic!
You might want to try an M88 too at some point, I feel like if would sound really good on your vocals.
Where did you see those pics? Those demos sound amazing I always thought and he's a fabulous vocalist.
I wouldn't be surprised if he used those mics, you read about or see pics of old sessions and they often have dynamics up for the vocals, probably since a lot of the tracking was done live, and sometimes with little or no isolation.
I feel like a lot of people discard dynamics on forums because they're using them with interface mic pres.
Plug an SM58 into a Neve for vocals, it sounds great.

Like Brice mentioned, my initial thought was "sounds a lot like where I would end up EQing an LDC to end up". Great mids. Love the EV dynamics. I have an RE-50 that I use a lot.

Dead on about the M88.
I had a mint M88TG that (I was even more foolish back then!), sold for "what I paid"-$150!
I kept a close alternative, the AKG D790.
As my ear has improved, I realize the M88 has a slightly fuller midrange.
The D790 has a slighty flatter top end, in comparison.
Part of the reason I bought the Soyuz, was to fill out the tone on my dynamics,
and have them sound more "present".

Here's a brief acapella clip, of the M88-ish AKG D790 below, on "Without You", most famous version sung by Harry Nilsson. Nilsson is one of my vocal heroes, for many reasons. Thanks! The AKG D790 can be found used, for around $60 or less. The AKG 770 was the same, except for the "ball type" end/windsreen. Ala 58 vs. 57. What's hilarious is that (in good voice), I've got the High Soprano's high F-when I sing very LOUD. For comparison Aha's "Take On Me", is "only" a high E. And singing that way, is a wonderful way to break a residential lease! If you ever have seen "The Five Heartbeats"... I'm trying to get my buddy Francois, to do that intro scene/Nothing But Love "live". Then I get to be "Choirboy" and "go to church!" Wearing a sweater like Carlton/Fresh Prince onstage always gets a laugh. (The Heartbeats film is required viewing if you're a Soul fan) As typical, I'm training to bring that Falsetto register, into lower volumes. I'm looking forward, after things settle, to some extremely loud singing (ear plug time!)... As my vocal master, (correctly) predicted my voice would gradually edge into "Heldentenor-ish" over time. Chris P.S. Though all things considered, the M88 is a tremendous value. Not random that Bob O. has recommended them, for the personal/home studio's first High End sounding vocal mic. |

Yeah I can imagine that would be pretty intense for the neighbours! The M88 is an amazing mic though a bit fragile, compared to a lot of dynamics... It's my default kick drum mic. I could record most things with it actually. The only thing I don't like it on is acoustic instruments. I know a lot of people like them but the only dynamic mics I've ever really liked on guitars, mandolin and stuff are the EV, probably the variable D that brings a better sense of space and less focus on the pick attack. |

The 88 I've seen killed were on kick drum. The 441 has been my tom mic recently. 88 on kick, 441 on toms, schoeps on snare. Love that combo |

For me it beats everything else cold. Well, I haven't tried a 441, so I can't really say "everything".....
And I don't use my studio condensers live.
One of the things I like about the 88 is that I tend to work the mic more than most contemporary singers do, pulling back when I get loud and coming up closer on quieter parts, and I do take advantage of proximity effect when I go down to my lower register, which isn't as loud as my normal mid register. And the 88 has proximity effect is spades, but keeps it smooth.

And that's probably an exaggeration! BTW David Bock himself, told me to get better with that, and quit relying on Compression so much.
