I will start. My name is Jeff and I am addicted to pro audio gear. Like with many folks, this started with a gateway drug. For me it was a Tascam 4 track cassette machine and a SM58, when I was about 18. From there it was the Tascam 8 track cassette machine, then the 8 track 1/2", then the 16 track 1” and so on. Along with that is all the lovely rack gear and microphones. I was almost out around 8-9 years ago. I started selling off some of my cool outboard and mic’s. Somewhere into that selling process, it all came back to me, worse than ever. I stopped selling and slowly started buying again. That somehow rolled into a vintage 3232 API recording desk, which somehow spawned Classic Audio Products of IL. A few vintage EQ’s, vintage comp’s and some great vintage mic’s later….and here I sit today, literally trying to work out a deal on a Fairchild 660. WTF??….. I started on a 4 track and recorded some cool stuff that I still have . Heres a song from an album I did on a 4 track cassette . We tracked the whole album in an afternoon . I always wanted one of those Tascam 8 track cassette machines , but could never find one .

Get a drip for half the price! Or do a Drip LA 2a. I love mine on so many things.

I'm late on my rent, owe iphone and con ed payments, and that's besides the IRS payments, and I'm still looking at gear.

Hey John, have you tried a cl1b? You know, I never have...was thinking about that the other day...Never really had the lust for it for some reason.

Well I'm glad some of you are avoiding the addiction. I, on the other hand, have not been so lucky. This past week has seen the arrival of a Grace M102 compressor (cause I couldn't bear the M101 pre being lonely like that without it's intended mate) AND a trio of matched CAD M179 mics... cause like 71 mics weren't enough. No, I had to have them as an alternate to Senn 421s and EV 308/408s for toms. Now, I blame that last purchase on YOU LOT.

I have successfully avoided Sta-Level cravings for the last two weeks. I think I said somewhere that I had convinced myself that I would never be able to do another vocal recording without a Sta-Level again. Then I realized that 99.999999% of all musical recordings probably were...I think I'm gonna be ok...and now my child can eat.

Well, I could but Sal and I have been sitting around talking about how much we don't HAVE to have one. He would think me somewhat disingenuous...

Well, I could but Sal and I have been sitting around talking about how much we don't HAVE to have one. He would think me somewhat disingenuous... So what's up? Do I detect some STA-bashing going on here? Hmmm... I've held off on the STA commentary so as to not inflict more damage (than has already been done). This forum needs a semi-sane admin, so I don't really want to contribute to the flame war over who bought what. And truly, I did not perceive that our esteemed admin was trying for the same box I bought. Bought - not "stole". Really. Anyway, my sweet, pristine STA does make for a pretty picture: Maybe I should buy Sal's and complete the circle. But I'm not sure about STAs on the 2-bus. Maybe there can be too much of a good thing, since I will be printing just about every take through it. To my ears, it's that good. I even hear additional fatness + girth on distorted guitar. Girth, I love that word. Not sure exactly what it means, but it sounds cool. So nah (probably) on the STA for 2-bus. But now I'm thinking of a Compex. I've been listening to Led Zeppelin IV way too much. Perspective is everything.

No - no bashing at all. It's still a great piece. Wish I had one, just can't afford it right now. I think I posted somewhere else that I had deceived myself into thinking I would never be able to successfully record another vocal without one...then I realized that 99.99999999% of vocals out there have been made without it. It's gonna be ok. I had emailed that guy - but hey - all's fair in internet bidding. I've just been busting your balls. There are two available right now, but I just don't want to go farther into debt to get one.
Talk it up - it's awesome...

I've just been busting your balls. Me too, it's all been in good fun. Life is waaaaaay too short to be overly serious about things, particularly where making music is concerned. I've had a good two weeks feeding my addiction: a Burl ADC B2, a STA, and (incoming), a Midas VeniceF 32, which I intend to use for DA at mixdown and also for summing. All current users say the converters are pretty good. We'll see. Using the Apollo outs + some of the Venice FW outs should be interesting, and allow me to stem at will. I might also begin offering a live recording service to my many friends, who do the opposite of me: they play gigs and don't record much, if at all. The Venice will work well for this application, I think.

I think I'm improving. All I bought this month was a 1973 Martin D28. I just spent a few days in NYC visiting my sister and avoided ALL craigslist ads and music stores!

Congratulations ward, how are you liking the Martin? 1973 doesn't sound so old at first, especially when you're always hearing of some legendary Martin from the 30's and 40's, but your Martin is 40 years old! I'm testing the ToneRight guitar break in device this week. Tomorrow, I'll play the guitar it's been sitting on for 5 days, I'm curious to see how much difference it makes. I think it's gonna be good.
My good friend Matt sent me a shelf with rack spaces built-in that he made. it was damaged in shipping, so I'm looking into if I can get it fixed up. Funny, even when broke, I'm looking at or thinking about new gear. The bottom line is it's all in service of getting what you want done. There may be better ways to go about it, but once you've set on this path, you'd have to quit it all together to get away from it.
I did that over 20 years ago, and vowed I'd never get back into this. I guess I just love hearing what's in my head played back at me.

I ain't sellin my Sta, period. I might sell other things but not that. Just too damn easy to get the sound I want. Paid for itself already in time saved IMO.

The thing seems to give any voice (even mine), using nearly any reasonable quality mic, a "finished" character. I can't imagine ever getting rid of it.

My dad noticed something was wrong early and called me a gearslut (the swedish equivalent) already at age 10 when I had been reading the same fishing gear catalogue over and over again for months. After that I had passionate periods with model airplanes, skateboarding, collecting old coins, basket ball, bridge, frisbee, boomerang etc etc.
Then came the music. I'm sure you can imagine the effect on an upcoming keyboard player in the 80s with all the new technology pouring in. I won't go into all details, but it was really bad. One highlight was when I needed extra work and assisted at a local music instruments store. After my two week salary was paid I still had a debt on like $1500 (though I still have the Roland MKS80 bought then, nice huh?!…). After that the attention slowly moved from keyboards to recording gear with a peak around and after 2008 when I got my console.
Latest addiction is DIY gear which combines the model airplane thing with audio gear lust with unforeseen powers. USPS did an error on my latest order from Jeff and sent to Australia so it's delayed for some time. Don't know how long I'll be able to wait. Shivering is getting bad…
