I will start. My name is Jeff and I am addicted to pro audio gear. Like with many folks, this started with a gateway drug. For me it was a Tascam 4 track cassette machine and a SM58, when I was about 18. From there it was the Tascam 8 track cassette machine, then the 8 track 1/2", then the 16 track 1” and so on. Along with that is all the lovely rack gear and microphones. I was almost out around 8-9 years ago. I started selling off some of my cool outboard and mic’s. Somewhere into that selling process, it all came back to me, worse than ever. I stopped selling and slowly started buying again. That somehow rolled into a vintage 3232 API recording desk, which somehow spawned Classic Audio Products of IL. A few vintage EQ’s, vintage comp’s and some great vintage mic’s later….and here I sit today, literally trying to work out a deal on a Fairchild 660. WTF??…..

As a teenager I got a job at Sam Ash, played with gear all day long and then turned my paycheck over each week to buy gear. I don't work at Sam Ash anymore but the rest is the same :-)

. . . . . . . . . . I am addicted to pro audio gear. . . . . . . . . . . . . . There is a terrible, simple beauty to this statement. The truth is, I am addicted to EVERYTHING I love in life: Music. Guitars. Girls. Recording gear. Girls. Fast cars. Girls. Astronomy equipment (this one, it's nearly as bad as the recording stuff). Girls. Marshall amps. Girls. Fine firearms. Girls . . . There's a trend in there, somewhere.

Jeff : As Matt was saying good thing you're not addicted to playing guitar. Where would you're heart go between that 660 and a vintage Gibson?
Are we going to see a CAPI 660 kit soon on your website?
As for me, i'm addicted to good sound in general. I always end-up buying good AND creative gear. That's why i love my CAPI pres, Focusrite EQs/Comps, tape delays, Pete Cornish LDs and Boost pedals, custom Gibsons/Fenders, custom amps.
Damn i even like great food and wines. Good thing for my bank accounts i do travel a lot for work so i rarely pay to travel.
I'd like to strugle for a 660 though...

I guess I have the bug too. Just really into it, want to build more, etc. Don't take care of my house like I should. Hired someone to cut the grass so I can have more studio time. It's really pretty weird. I am finally at the point where I don't really have any crap gear worth selling to get more good stuff. Mine started with a hand-me-down 4 track as well. In 95 I moved to tape. In 1999 I moved to DAW. In 2011 I was all in the box. Now I am trying to come out. 500 series is pretty much crack. Empty rack spaces prove that nature abhors a void.

I used to be addicted to it. Started out 2 track cassette, moved to 4 track, 8 track, 8 track digital, back to 2 track minidisc with a mixer, then jumped to a console with tascam Mx2424, then to the same console with a SSL alphalink. Now I've increased my outboard gear and stopped playing with software. The only things I buy now are what I need for certain sessions, mostly mics. I have a few things I'd like to buy but their prices keep me from pulling the trigger. During this whole time I bought and sold an enormous amount of semi-pro gear and also DIY stuff. I learned what worked, and what didn't. I also learned a lot about myself and about the gear industry.
The thing I learned about myself? That I started out thinking that my knowledge was holding me back when it was my gear, but then later what I thought I knew changed when my gear changed.
What did I learn about gear? That once you reach a certain point, the returns are greatly diminishing. Buy the best you can, but only what you need.
If I had to do it all over again, I would have done more research and figured out more of what I wanted before I spent money. I spent too much time chasing "the next great thing" without even using what I had to the fullest.

I can understand all the other stuff, the firearms don't do much for me, though, must be an American thing...

Yes, from experience, the girl thing can be more expensive, by far! And the guns thing is purely an American phenomenon, I think. But I am not a gun nut. I put in a weekly session at my local range, and find that it requires intense focus and discipline to be safe, and shoot well. It is very challenging, and a popular pursuit, out here in the wild wild west of Arizona.

This is a common ailment amongst our kind, to the point that it is a character trait or perhaps even a genetic trait! Are we OCD, addictive personality types or what? Thankfully, I haven't bought a guitar or amp in maybe 4 years... 53 guitars and 13 amps seems to be holding, for now. But Pro Audio Gear? "Hi my name is Ward and I am a gearaholic..."

I've found only one solution for relieving GAS... it's buying the "next" piece of gear. Just like a multi-vitamin, though, it's needs to be taken daily.

I'm waiting on a buddy of mine to go put eyes and ears on this 660. He's a great friend but not moving fast enough for me. I haven't slept thru the nite since last Thursday. I hope he can go there today so I can move on, one way or the other.

There's an off-chance I might be slightly interested in the 660, if you don't want it

I'm going to have to get out of the music industry in order to afford the gear that runs the music industry...And I'm not kidding about that...

The "new" music biz can't afford the "old" music gear.

On second thought, I don't really 'hate' my day job, let's say it's not what I'm passionate about. After all, it pays for all the rest and that's a great thing, innit?

Sadly I am not at all gear addicted Is something wrong with me? Though it should be stated my favorite records were all made on lofi gear. Mike

Some would say you've got a great situation... being able to be creative and selective about what you do musically. I work professionally in music, and would say I enjoy 85% of the music that comes my way...which is quite high for an independent producer/engineer. Occasionally, I just gotta "do my best" with what's given... feels like being handed a few loaves and fish...but I ain't a miracle worker
