There's nothing wrong with improving something if obvious improvements make themselves evident, honestly, I will almost always try to do the same thing. In my experience the essence of something intended will shine through even if you remove some of the warts rather than try to reproduce all of the warts. Look at the reissue of Electrodyne preamps, they corrected some things that were factually wrong with that original design, made it more reliable, still captures the Essence, no one is complaining. Chad No skin in the game either, but Chad you forgot reason number 2. You learn from talking to guys at who designed or built the original and find out there was some issue they wished they could have addressed that you have a simple solution for years later. We never have seen that one my friend now have we. Yep, that was actually the story behind Electrodyne's rebirth that I alluded to earlier... he talked to the original engineers and said 'was there anything that you wish you could have fixed on the original design?', and they were like, yes, there was this one transistor... etc.

Even the Sony C37a (and Tonelux JC37) sound way different to me, versus the GAP. Chris

circuit and construction wise... no. the capsule yes, both the original and ga capsules are SHOCKINGLY similar in design and construction to a k67. voicing is slightly different between the two styles of capsules though. the japanese style capsule frequency response is almost the same but with a little less midrange boost. Is it fair to say that the GAP800 owes a nod to the U67 and U47/M7 microphones also?

I have no idea about the "design" or intent, but I do know about the sound. And an 800G is about as far away from a 67 as you can get. Far from a 47 too. But further from the 67. Speaking stock un-modded microphones.....

I figure it would take a Yoda to resolve this... Just when I stepped out to grab the popcorn, to further enjoy the Ward/Dr. Bill discussion! Kinda like debating with my Chess Friends-who was the "greatest Chess Player"... Morphy or Fischer? (Spoiler alert-even Bobby thought Morphy was better than him! ) Chris

Thanks to avgatzeblouz, I'm good. I know there's a difference but have always heard something in there that reminds me of a U67 in general and an M269 more specifically. And that explains it. also, there is a slight silk there that reminds me of an M7 capsule. But we are really splitting hairs anyhow.

Curious. What does the GAP800g cost to make? $400? Where is the 900% markup going? What, with the cooler on it? Then there's gotta be at least $35 in the Rycote suspension..... Peltier cooler modules are only a few bucks.
