Wow. Nuts. The C800 really isn't that special to need a 5K$ clone.. A cheap 6AU6 pentode, wired as triode, run at a higher voltage for a bit more gain.. K67 type capsule and triode-wired pentode give a slightly peaked top end.
Never understood the Peltier cooler though. The 6AU6 they use can handle more than 1W and the 6AU6 in the C800 maybe produces 0.2W max..

The REAL C-800G is a very special mic & has to be one of the best of all times - plus it's still being made. Curious to hear what this sounds like. Eric is right, they got the looks. Not 100% sure but seems like the power supply does not look exactly alike & wondering if it has the 2 6AU6A tubes in it.

Big mistake for them IMHO. I can pick up a REAL pristine/vintage U87i for less.
Let alone the picks from companies like Heiserman/Tonelux/Chandler/Bock Soundelux/FLEA/AEA/Soyuz/etc. etc.
AA seems the bang for the buck C800G version... Chris

Not 100% sure but seems like the power supply does not look exactly alike & wondering if it has the 2 6AU6A tubes in it. From the Sweetwater site: "After many subjective listening tests comparing a tube rectifying circuit with a solid state one, Golden Age found that they actually preferred the sound of the latter, so this is what they used in the GA-800G. The bonus is that you never need to worry about replacing tubes in the included power supply!"

I was going to drop 4k on a mic it wouldn't be this one. It would from a company like Heisermann, Flea, Neumann etc that has a history and pedigree.

That's great, but the existence of a product page doesn't discount my statements. The corresponding thread at the purple place also has a couple of comments like these: www.gearslutz.com/board/showpost.php?p=14464457&postcount=42...that make me think that if it's not out of production, then they must be having some notable supply problems currently, and you'll be waiting for a long time if you order one today. I was going to drop 4k on a mic it wouldn't be this one. It would from a company like Heisermann, Flea, Neumann etc that has a history and pedigree. For the former two, keep in mind that they had the same history/pedigree problem once upon a time AFAIK.

I can’t imagine why Sony would discontinue one of their most popular microphones. Albeit at 10k it’s probably not a crazy seller. Still it’s as revered in certain circles as the big 5.
From Sweetwater: “Due to unforseen circumstances, Sony is currently experiencing manufacturing delays on the C800G microphone. Please contact us to either secure your place in line for the earliest possible future shipment or discuss product alternatives.”

Vincent, Their customer support for the wired mics leaves a lot to be desired. Don't know why. Anyway, having used & owning a lot of high-end mics, it definitely belongs, like you stated, in the "big 5". Ariel

Sony changes its mind about what it is doing in pro audio every 10 seconds.

It is a interesting and surprising move by GAP to me. Clearly I must misunderstand both the regard and retail demand for GAP mic's, and they must have sold more of their $1,800 GA-47's than I would have ever guessed for them to choose to enter the 4k mic market. As pointed out here on other threads in the past, for multiple reasons these days I would also think the net overall for most Co's (where GAP has made their living) seems far better off selling volume on lower to mid end product than it does selling fewer higher margin product.

At the same time if the product is right it could substantially boost their credibility. It’s an interesting move, especially with many companies going the other way.

A higher end product can add prestige to a product line and (hopefully) increase sales across the board, or so the company thinking might go.
And nobody else is cloning this mic.

But why would I buy this at like 250-300% more cost, over the AA or Stam ?

Just Stam if you’re willing to wait a year.... or two. So is Advanced Audio, although theirs is more a tribute and much more budget conscious.

I thought the Stam 800 sounded very good and very close in the video, but it is fair to wonder how long the wait would actually be even if it is $1,300. While I still find it curious, you must be right John and Vincent on what GAP's thinking is. If the original is 10k and there aren't many clones out there, I guess I'll expect to see more clones of it in the future choosing their price point in this market with so much room to undercut the original. Can Warm Audio and other boutique's be far behind....
Getting back to GAP. Their mic's have been budget level mic's in general until they introduced their last two of their 47 and then 251 clones at the $1,800 price point,....... now their 800 clone at a 4k price point,....which leads me to think their previous move up to the two $1,800 clones may have accomplished their goals and there must be greater support for them worldwide to move this direction than I'm aware of

'Tribute' and 'sounds like' (at a glance, in an online demo) are very different from 'same as' or 'damn close to same as' in long term in use. Only the last will count here.
