Or it has optical network or MADI connectivity so that they can be literal.
Maybe those unused MADI ports will be put to use. Nevermind...I didn't realize that only the older 16's have the unused MADI ports. It is an odd thing that they are there though.
One thing I've always really liked about the Apollos is that they didn't cheap out and forego the expansion cards. It's a nice bit of future proofing.
So who knows? If TB isn't capable of whatever it is that UA has cooked up with Luna, maybe Luna will interconnect with MADI (or some other protocol) and Apollo expansion cards will be available for that.
I really hope this is something that increases the ability's of the existing Apollo/Satellites and not something that only works on new hardware. Maybe they are anticipating a bunch of sales:)
I don't know why this has to be an either or type of situation? UA did call it a recording "system", so I don't know why it couldn't be an entire lineup of products that each do different things rather than one single product that is going to somehow address everyone's competing desires?
UA seems to be hinting at all of these various things, so maybe it could be all of these things, each as its own unit:
1. New recording platform/updated Console/DAW/DSP platform, ala PT HDX, or some version thereof
2. New control surface with faders for DAW and plugin control
NAMM 2020: Universal Audio claims its new product LUNA will “shape the future of recording” By Si Truss (Future Music, Computer Music) 16 hours ago
“Groundbreaking” announcement set for day one of NAMM 2020
The hype on this is palpable. It had better be really really REALLY great, or there will be a huge letdown. I don't really think that there's anything out there that is singlehandedly going to "shape the future of recording". Sorry, I expect more.....

Maybe Luna will find somebody to pay for the music.
