Hey Guys,
For a long time, I always mixed from drummer perspective. I'm a drummer and it feels/sounds more natural for me. When I opened my studio with a separate control room and great isolation, I started tracking from audience perspective. It's super weird to watch the player with the perspective reversed. At this point, I'm struggling with which I should use in the mix stage. Mixing to audience still sounds weird to my ears, but I think it's probably the more common way. At the same time, the only people who probably even care/notice are drummers, so why not mix the way they like it?
What are you guys doing?

Drummer's perspective. I think when a drummer listens to their stuff, it should sound familiar. Also, I just like it that way. My right ear likes floor toms better than my left.

Drummer perspective.
When someone is listening to a song and is air drumming following the beat, they are always air drumming in the drummer perspective.

Always drummer perspective unless it’s a live show I’m mixing, then maybe it will be audience perspective. It’s all about the air drumming! I don’t think non-musicians care one way or the other but drummers definitely do.

Audience, though I don't think many, if any, people who aren't musicians or engineers would notice.

Audience of course. Anything else is wrong.

Always mix in audience perspective. But it doesn't matter which 😊

Audience perspective of watching a left-handed drummer. Anything else is wrong.

Audience, when I actually pan drums in stereo (which I used to do a lot, but hardly ever now.) These days, though, it's usually mono, up the middle.I seems unnatural to me to spread the drums all over the stereo soundstage (pianos, as well.)
Obviously many people disagree and that's OK, too.

Drummer, because only drummers notice or care, and no should EVER have to air drum backwards...I mean that’s just rediculous, right?

Drummer. I’d be curious what percent of major label stuff is drummers perspective but I’d guess it is pretty low. I just like it better for some reason.
Cheers, Geoff

Both, depending on client.
I have one client who is a singer/songwriter/musician/drummer. His projects are always drummer perspective.
Most other musicians/people don't care and don't notice.

I go old school and pan all drums to the right side.
Hah!
Drummers perspective for me.

I go old school and pan all drums to the right side. That's probably what John said above. 😁😂😂

Drummer's perspective. mostly because I am the drummer these days.
If someone else does it different, I don't care. It's all good.
