FAL has a sale at moment. I bought the VCL-4 after demoing it a bit as I didn't have an opto in my toolbox that would suit my needs. For some reason I never really gelled with UAD LA2s nor Black Rooster's VLA-3. I demoed UAD LA3 a few years back but didn't buy it as I thought something was missing. After getting an Audioscape V3A, I compared it against every single LA3A plugin that I could demo, except UADs LA3A, because I wanted to know if my purchase was justified. What I found after many tests is that some plugins are closer than others (VLA-4 was good), but all of them let through some transients that the hardware doesn't. Especially in the high end. The 'box tone' isn't there either, but I wasn't too concerned about that. But I still don't understand why a plugin 'misses' transients. It was an eye opening experience when I realized that soft clipping a pre amp was a better way to tame peaks than using software compression. In my case I’m using AML 1073’s on my drum bus and usually vp28’s on my mix bus. But it was for the same reason you just said…software comps can often do good volume leveling, but many of them don’t really catch the transients very well.

Plug for my humble TNC ACMP 73s in the classifieds. Only selling because I bought a silver bullet and they excel at this.

Clipping peaks is a different sound from volume modulating them down really fast. Clipping produces oscillations so produces more peaks but these can still be lower in volume than the clipped peak. Most brickwall limiters have pcm sample clippers for the brickwall part and do not care about the signal peaks. Solution is to stop using those along with analog emulations. The brickwall limiters function more like dysfunctional speaker protection limiters with some leveling than an 1176. What limits peaks for me. Set all to highest quality: Oxford Dynamics limiter section and Oxford Limiter, DC8C3 set correctly will eat more peaks than an 1176 as can MJUC mk1, Oldtimer and Impressor on fast attack can demolish your audio, Kotelnikov and Molot GE on Insane with fast attack (alpha) in Molot, Presswerk set correctly will murder peaks, Faraday Limiter and Vulf in HQ, MDWDRC2 secondary detector sped up beyond root mean cube. Analog emulations that can do it: Neold V76U73 is an emulation that can take peaks off with the fast attack, Overloud 76 V2 can, PSP Fetpressor can too if you use the high pass filter wisely, Kush Silika can demolish your audio. These can only do it because of the saturation but they can do it.
Apogee Soft Limiter emulation is a good free plugin that can take brief sharp peaks off. emulation of diode clipper.

The 'box tone' isn't there either, but I wasn't too concerned about that. But I still don't understand why a plugin 'misses' transients. The emulation plugins cannot greatly speed up with greater gain reduction. They do not work like optical detectors do or they try to operate as simplified circuit models that eventually produce infinite harmonics of infinite harmonics in the sidechain reflecting back at the rectified audio causing the compressor to do stupid things to the sound. This is how aliasing is not just in high end but produces low end garbage too. Yet we see developers and equipment manufacturers defending their crappy plugs that make no attempt to mitigate distortion or be functional time and time again on gearspace. Using a polynomial waveshaper instead of a circuit model is not an attempt to mitigate distortion despite what certain gear manufacturer claimed on gearslutz about their modeled plug. That's like a prisoner wearing a plain white shirt instead of a Hawaiian shirt to his execution. He's still dead at the end of the day and the plugin is still totally dysfunctional volume modulator. His plugin is still worse than the quarter century old algorithms in Oxford Dynamics and Renaissance Compressor.

Point taken, but there are some assumptions there that don’t really apply. I’m not using any brick wall limiters. I don’t heavily rely on analog emulations (although I have nothing against using them if they sound good). And using hardware inserts has been a perfect solution for me. IME, clipping a preamp (vp28, aml1073, sebatron vmp4000 in my case) provides a very music way of controlling peaks/transients, Oscillations be damned. And they do it better than most software compressors. I do appreciate the plug-in recommendations though.

Yeah, I can't get that file to download either. Sent a support message to Fuse.
EDIT: Fuse says this isn't released yet.

I already own a few of their plugins, trying not to get too redundant with my tools overall. But since this sale is so cheap I decided to pick up the DrumsSSX to see if it might fit the bill occasionally when I mix stuff other people send me that's not multi-track. That software is one for the more expensive ones normally for Fuse. I assume it works similar to iZotope RX on the re-mix feature, only it's setup more for drums. That sale is insanely good. I'm very curious about the DrumSSX. I just started a hybrid with some things from the artist's home studio, like drums and percussion, but would like some better control over the stereo loops/sections from Garage Band. How are you finding the DrumsSSX working out?

Also you’re not usually straight hard clipping the power rails hitting something hot. Transformer Hysteresis and saturation can be massive sound betterer. Digital the solvers for that are very demanding so we’re stuck with high cpu plugs and guys passing off interesting parallel polynomial wave shaping algorithms as low cpu “virtual iron” I didn’t mean offense when poor tools and skill issue. Many of the better digital compressors are insanely complex like dc8c3, Presswerk, and Unisum and stuff that’s simpler or older often misses the initial peak or cannot really go faster than 5-10 ms attack. Pro-C2 for example hits And snaps hard but has issues getting really really fast for me.

No longer redirects to "File not found"! ...now it redirects to "Forbidden" They really don't seem to want anyone to have this free plug.

Link works here and from it ,I can log into my account, but then there is no page for that plug in so you cannot download it as per the instructions.

Said that, it's been great for basic rebalancing of a drum kit in a single stereo file. I was once able to shorten the decay of a kick drum and brighten a snare, all without any noticeable side effects. I was impressed to say the least.

I like it! Very nice sounding saturation on vocals, and no aliasing that I can see running tones through it in SPAN. Amazing that Fuse would give this away for free.

Yep, just downloaded and installed the V72 plug-in on my PC - looks great (ears on the case tomorrow) Hope Ray doesn't get flak from its similarity to his design work on the NEOLD V76U73 sold through Plugin Alliance

They’re both great, but something about the lift/harmonics in this one hits right on that sound that says V72/76/Beatles in my head.

Interesting plugin. Looks wise, it's similar to the NEUOLD V76, but that product is a full channel strip.
This V72 thing is a color tool akin to the Sonimus A and N Consoles. It's designed to impart that tube style saturation, allow for basic filter options, and you can set up multiple instances for group control. That last part is pretty cool across a mix.
It's a subtle effect, but I'm still surprised he's giving this away.

Also, I hadn't remembered Ray's Fuse Audio Labs VPRE-376 freebie released some time ago, which is modeled on the later transistorised version of the 76.
There's quite a family of TAB/Telefunken plug-ins out there!
