jayson Use the Soundcraft supply. It will be fine as is. I don't know of a DOA that can't handle +/- 17v just fine. I actually burn-in my gars at +/- 18v. Plus as a bonus 5.25 amps will power lots of slots. Gary

The 1731's are a little bit easier actually. Does anyone else feel that it's easier to install the Millmax pins first? Gary, what are your thoughts on that step? Specific reason? I just started this next batch of fifteen for Jeff's Compressors, and I found it awkward doing the pins as stated in the build guide sequence. The other 1731s that I built for my CAPI 553s I did the pins first and found it easier, after following the build guide on the first couple I did. These dazes after building 100s of these, I think doing the pins last is easiest for me. The way bannedchuck does them is the way chung does them in one of his build illustrations and works great. Either way is fine. groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=38564.msg660760#msg660760If you do them last put the PCB in a bench vise, keep the PCB level and solder from the bottom only. Hopes this helps guys Gary

Got the Hakko FX-888 station here. Done more than a hundred CAPI pres and doa's at 700-750 degrees with no problems. Used 3 tips so far. Tips are $6-$7 at Frys. I got the same Hakko fishmusician has. Built 100s of gars with it... Great Iron!! BTW.. don't froget a Hakko 808 while your at it... This guy will SAVE YOUR BUTT!! Gary

I'm slowly filling an 11 way 500 rack with Heiders and VP28s that I'll put in a portable rack case, probably an SKB plastic case as my sessions takes place like 99.9% in my home town and I don't need a heavy duty case. What's the word on the heat issue with these? 20+ opamps generate quite some heat. Is it recommended or even crucial to add an extra rackspace above the 500 rack? Most rack cases provide about an inch of space on the bottom/top but they're not open on the front so no possibility for the air to really move. jsteiger? Anyone else? I can’t speak for Scott but I bet his Red Dots run heat wise about the same as my gars. 1U space above is always nice but not necessary running +/-16v or in svart’s case an unsued Console supply at +/- 17v. If you are in the +/- 18v-20v Range I would be a bit more concerned about heat. The higher voltages produce a lot more heat with only a marginal increase in headroom. So the short answer Paul.. Don’t worry about it. Gary

Need a 500 series comp?? www.musiclab.com.au/product-info/foote-control-systems-pico-502-mono-vcaYou will never hear anything bad from this guy and most likely will never hear it work unless you push the hell out of it !! A wire with gain control. If you don't want much colour from a comp this 500 series is a jewel. Based on THAT CORP chips VP28>> LC53>> pico 502 Gary

I am building a pair of these at the moment. The build is much easier than the LC53 and only just a bit harder than a VP26. If you have built a VP26 you can build one of these guys with no problem. Jeff's build docs are excellent !! It's a very nice kit indeed!! I have owned a pair of 553s for about 4 years and love them. Jeff's version with the added filters should be VERY sweet!! 553s have a VERY broad Q and are very musical. As Jeff says: "This EQ is not a fixer it's an enhancer. VTC = vintage tone control ".It's nice for just a gentile lift or cut. Gary

I worked with Vince in the early part of his career in the early 80s when I was Monitor engineer and system tech for Pure Prairie League. Even in his early 20s he was a great guy and a first class musician with an incredible voice. You Could tell he was going places. This is Vince around fall of '82. Gary
