I think folks are overlooking the obvious. Russia is a closed state. Putin has passed laws making it punishable for even saying the word "War" he has shut down opposition media, he has killed opposition leaders, he jails artists who write songs against him, etc. The people of Russia do not know what is going on unless they seek out alternative news (at some personal risk). State Media tells them the Russians are liberating Ukraine from Nazis. The idea behind shutting down UA or Plugin-Alliance, or McDonald's, or people flooding Russian restaurant review sites with news about what's REALLY happening is to try to get that kid in his apartment in St. Petersburg trying to make some sick beats to start to question why he can't download an update to his plugin... to break the spell of the Russian misinformation fed to the people. Sure, it's a tiny drop in the bucket but if it cuts the war or Putin's control of Russia by even a minute, it's worth it. Russia's commitment to its occupation of Afghanistan only started to break when the people, mostly mothers of dead soldiers, started protesting and asking questions. This time, the Russians have sent in crematorium trucks so the bodies of those soldiers who have been killed in Ukraine won't ever come home, and the people won't know. (FYI official estimates are that 5,000 russian soldiers have already died in the Ukraine, 13,000 died in the 10 years in Afghanistan) Stop with the historical whataboutism - The Vatican came out against the russian invasion of Ukraine but, but, but they helped Nazi's escape in WW2 so I guess they shouldn't have done that because they were on the wrong side before? Nonsense. To add to that, we did very little with Crimea. We did very little during the raising of Chechnya. We did nothing as Georgia was ground into pulp. What's next for Russia...Poland? Finland (goodby Genelec), Scandinavia, Mongolia? To me, the brave people fighting in Ukraine FOR Ukraine are holding back a tide that has been encroaching on Easter Europe and Northern China for well over a century.

Just wondering if anyone has the figures for how much money was raised in support of the people of Iraq after the 2003 US led invasion? Anyone? It's in the multiple of Billions of dollars as of now.

UA steps up !! An Open Letter of Support for Ukraine from Sandeep Gupta, COO, Universal Audio. We at Universal Audio have been stunned and saddened by Russia's aggressive and inhumane invasion of Ukraine leaving millions of people displaced and in fear for their lives, families, and country. This includes Ukrainian members of the UA family that live and work in Kyiv. Much of the world, including many governments and private corporations, has responded to this crisis with economic sanctions — hoping to move the Russian people to pressure their leadership to stop the war. After much consideration and discussion, we at Universal Audio have decided to act in support of the proud Ukrainian people. As of today, we are pausing all UA sales and support activities in Russia and Belarus, and we have blocked all IP addresses from those countries on all our websites and services. Secondly, beyond our own corporate donations, we have designated next Wednesday, March 16 as a special UA Giving Day. On that day, all online store proceeds will be donated to humanitarian relief efforts for the Ukrainian people. Please help spread the word! We will continue to be in close contact with our Ukrainian staff as they defend their country and their families, some of whom have made it safely to Hungary. We will continue to apply pressure on Russia and do what we can to support the people of Ukraine and will stand with others who choose to do the same. We hope that actions by the world community and companies like ours will bring an end to this senseless violence and look forward to a more peaceful future. Sandeep Gupta COO Universal Audio UA rocks!!!

I ran into this topic on another thread and sort threw my hands up in frustration. I really prefer the direction this discussion has gone in. I actually purchased VMR/VCC and have put it to use in a design template I was working on and had loads of issues with it. It was impossible to automate easily, so after a few days with it the only real workable solution was to have a master bypass automated and that was that. I did a VMR/VCC insert on every track and played around with that for a bit. I guess I can say that it did something to the dimensionality of the mix (I had the drive set to zero), but it was a very subtle effect. In the end I had to get rid of it (I'm now selling them on ebay LOL) as the VMR plugin running the show was a bit too much of a pain in the butt for me to deal with. If it wasn't for the fact that VCC needs VMR to run it, I would probably have kept VCC just for the fact that you can make it a subtle effect if used on every track and bus. Is it an accurate "emulation of anything"? I couldn't say as I've never had the opportunity to A/B different consoles running the same signal through them. I will say that once you start cranking up that "Drive" knob, VCC turns more into a harmonic distortion plugin than anything else.

if you guys aren't using something like www.backblaze.com to backup all your stuff, you're doing it wrong. it's the best $5/mo you can spend. I looked at them and like that they have the infrastructure to handle the traffic, but see little difference between them and carbonite for the same price. I too would rather have a solution for secure cold storage of projects rather than the constant upload of data. AD

LOL, now it seems that there are only two manufactures of HDs and numerous brands. So does this mean that in 15 years we will be mocking Samsung's SSD's on our Microsoft Quantum powered CPU Linux boxes? That's going to be a fun time I hope to be able to partake in (assuming I'm not to busy telling those damned kids to stay off my lawn).

How things change! I remember when Seagate was best, Samsung was the absolute worst and WD was mediocre. I don't know, a lot of the drives that the server farm was using that had high marks get really poor marks elsewhere and vice versa. I think that the data provided was wonderful, it's just not 100% scientific. It's just data that was collected by the server farm and released without bias. Digging into the numbers reveals why this may not be so cut and dry. Like I mentioned above, keeping it to Q1 2015 there were only 252 seagate 1.5TB drives which had a 36%fail rate. Compared to the 4,664 HGST Deskstar drive with a fail rate of 1.66% isn't a fair test. Not to knock the 7200 2TC HGST, but comparing it to 252 Seagate 1.5 TB drives is not scientific. Nor would it be fair to say that the 2TB Seagate Barracuda's 0% fail rate based on only 81 devices is fair. The data's good, but there isn't any firm interpretation apart from anecdotal inferences you could draw from it. Still the best thing to do is to keep an eye on your drive's SMART status and back up frequently. AD

Haha. I don't even know the english version. German version MS speak is even worse. Because it is also inconsistent in many places.... Worked once as a freelance technical translator in this field. MS projects were hilarious. Badly paid for the beginner, because you lose alot of time with their glossaries and lectors, at that time seemingly a bunch of exile germans that haven't been in Germany for decades, because their corrections were a bit like automatic translations from chinese sometimes... :-P We did alot of stuff around Office 2000, back in time... That's what you get when you let engineers name things, LOL.

This is great. I looked through the links and can surmise that the 1.5 TB seagate is either faulty or they had a really bad batch because that annual failure rate is obscene. Saddly, I couldn't glean any info from the 2TB drive from Seagate (the ones I have) as they only had 81 in use in the 2015 sample which compared to the rest of the manufacturers is too small a sample to get excited over its 0% annual fail rate for 2015. I do agree that it's never a bad idea for all of us to keep tabs on the SMART stats on our drives, and invest in a spare cheap PC with an empty drive bay to run Spinrite (it works on NTFS, but it has to be run on a PC). I just upgraded my work drives to 3 2TB 7200 RPM Baracuda raided 0 with an 8TB 5400RPM Seagate BU drive. I'm using the Raid set for speed, but have to handle the nightly backups myself because of the nature of dealing with Raid 0. As far as read/write speeds go on the RAID set I saw a near 75% increase in speed. So far PT hasn't given me any issues. AD hey bro, don't buy SADgate drives (see the graphs and that article I linked) I was about to thank you for that chart, LOL. I think my next HD purchase will take that into account. I hope these at least last me a year and a half. AD PS-thank you for the chart.

Neil wrangles PCs and consoles for the BBC as his day job. All of the machines are tested with the mac os for people who want an up to date CPU to use with their Pro Tools pci-e cards. I don't want a mac but I do want the option of buying a used HDX or HD native system. The Haswell-Es offer twice the floating point calculations per core as Sandy Bridge. I'm getting the lesser 6 core because it's a 3.3GHz that can still handle peaks up to 3.6. It seems to be the sweet spot right now performance-wise. Anything significantly more powerful would be both significantly more expensive and noisy. After playing with Windows 10, I'm itching to build a high end PC for Post production. I just priced out a dual 10 core E5 machine and it comes in at about three grand less than the highest end Mac Pro and doesn't necessitate me having to get a Thunderbolt chassis. I know Neil and crew can have builds like these listed on the Pro-Tools PC site as coming soon. I really think a lot of the naysayers on this thread will really warm up to Win10 when it hits. It really does take the best of Win7 and 8 and throws out the trash. AD

It'll be interesting. I just ordered a 6 core Pro Tools PC with two system drives, one to stay at 8.1 and one I'll upgrade to 10. pro-tools-pc.comOh, please report back on how that works for you. I've been interested in the Pro Tools PC for a while. I've talked with Neil and crew a bunch of times and they seem really great. I have a feeling that when Win 10 hits and is stable it will be the go to OS for DAWs. I've been using the beta for some time and I have nothing but good things to say about it (the charms are gone!!!) AD

Something people are missing is that 12 is not a fixed block of new features like new versions have been in the past. They say they will be adding a few new features at a time over the course of each year rather than saving everything up for a giant upgrade every few years. This is why it's being sold as a years worth of upgrades. The support means they'll find out about any bugs they missed immediately and be able to fix them much faster than waiting to hear from dealers or corporate users. Their support people also have the capability of troubleshooting and repairing people's systems remotely. Corporations have been using this service for years but now they are putting everybody on it. What twelve is this month is not what it will be in three months or three months after that. That's why I suggest that 11 owners wait until they see something they want in 12 before signing on. I like your quote, but to further confuse the issue, when I talked to Avid I asked if they would be doing that for everybody and what I got was a resounding "no". Only for "Avid Qualified Systems". Meaning the Macintosh Family that meets spec a few HPs, and a few Dell's. No custom boxes, no Alienware etc. . Not even the "Pro Tools PC".

Which major studio might this be? They all used to have mantainence people to keep the hardware running. My biz is to keep the hardware running. Seems it's more a cost issue than an inability to keep well designed hardware functioning. It's so much easier to click a mouse than to pick up a soldering iron. Ill counter that Jim There was a Time when the DAW machine was just a DAW, but now there is more pressure to have that thing on the net surfing and doing everything else. Few realize the places we go on the net leave a trail and oh so much garbage ! Add in the fact every audio guy thinks he's an IT guy and it becomes more of a mess. My favorite response yet.

If you look at how the prices are laid out in the store it makes more sense. There is still info missing. My question, do you still get 10 with 11? My laptop can't run 11 but it can run 10. I use the laptop for my location gigs. If you do it before 12 is released yes you get 12! What sucks is this is great if your on 9 you will be updated through at least 12 if your on 8 or older your SOL would have been cool to at least get us legacy guys up to 10 and have lic for 11 and 12 which might have been the insentive to upgrade ! Agreed.

If you own 11 we have until dec 2016 to decide Pt xpert had already compared 12 to 11 not big differences just cloud junk Unless your clients are on pt cloud how do you benefit ? I do audio post work, so PTHD is pretty much my bread and butter. I could just to Nuendo, but the buy in is on par with getting an HD Native card and PTHD. The feeling is that I'd be trading in one closed system for another. Then there is the fact that finding people to handle DX, SFX, design edits would be supremely difficult as there are so few people I know in this field who are as capable with Nuendo as they are with PTHD. I really only know one person near me and he is just an assist. Then there is the template design (which I would personally not look forward to doing) and the simple fact that I can't double click a region and have an automation lift for that clip ready to go with just a flick of the mouse (PT's muliti-tool is an editor's dream). If I want to drop about three times as much as I would on a PTHD or Nuendo system I could go with fairlight, but that brings a whole slew of other problems to the mix. All of that being totally true for me, I still have to side with most on this board. Other that a bunch of stuff I don't use, what does PTHD12 bring to me and my workflow? The sad reality is that unless I plan on paying a premium of business grade bandwidth for me and everybody I use on projects, I'm not seeing the collaboration being an attractive enough gem for me to get excited about. Maybe when the bandwidth gets better I'll sing a different tune, but until then I'm still baffled at Avid. AD P.S. to add insult to injury here, Media Composer 8 has this same update plan as PTHD. Their yearly fee is only $299. Why is PTHD getting screwed on this? AD

Seriously? Maybe in Nashville, but a far different story in LA..... And must we really degrade the conversation to "poor" tools? No, Pro Tools is by far the standard in Nashville. Comparing Steinburg to Avid is like comparing Apples to other Apples. I've dealt with both companies and they are equally bad and good in their own special ways. And they are both better than Apple.
