Sorry M57 I crashed into the middle of the thread. I understand what you are looking for and then I can give an example of a plugin that sounds so good that I sold the hardware. Now that was many years ago and I don't know if I would have done the same thing today. But I had a stereo DBX 160VU hardware. Spent a day in the studio comparing the UAD 160 against my hardware. Of course there was a certain difference, but it was so small that I sold the hardware and have been satisfied with the UAD 160VU plugin.

For the way I work, the order of importance in hardware would be: 1) Microphones 2) Preamp and Interface 3) Compression Agree with u here, except that I shift everything one step and take acoustic treatment first. After I built the last studio, everything has fallen into place with everything. So my list will be... 1) Room 2) Microphones 3) Preamp and Interface 4) Compression

Great, let us know what you think of C suite! I think I would order same or maybe massenburg eq I ran a 14 day demo on C-Suite C-Vox Noise when recording a string quartet in the studio. Then there was some background noise that C-Suite C-Vox Noise fixed so nicely. I usually use a plugin that guys here in Stockholm have made and it's "Brusfri" by klevgrand. Is really good. But that C-Suite C-Vox Noise made it a bit nicer without artifacts. Good plugin when there is background noise. But significantly more fun plugin of the two is Hitsville Reverb. It was love at first demo day

for those still on the fence you can currently get this and a second plugin for $149 ($124 when you apply the holiday coupon) as part of 2 plugin custom bundle. Thanks for that info deif Went straight in and bought "Hitsville Reverb" (best reverb I've heard in a long time) and C-Suite C-Vox Noise & Ambience Reduction for 124 euros

As Anders describes, I think it works well. I have a couple of Coles in the back of my kit. Now they are perhaps not as low as Anders described about Tretow. But sometimes it's nice to hit the cymbals a little harder when it's a punk/metal song (for the right feeling). But then you sit there and have to mix them and regret that the adrenaline pumped a little too much. Then I usually use Coles as OH in the picture. Doesn't have to be Coles but having them low in the back catching the whole set could be a way to make it work. Then there is one more thing that no one has mentioned that can be a good "savior" and I think works really well in the right doses. It's "Sooth2". KR H Is spiff as good as soothe too? Hi Dan! I actually have no idea about that plug "spiff". Had to watch some YT clips and it seems to be really good for what it does. Maybe I'll catch a black friday deal. Will check out Tokyo Dawn De-Edger as well, thanks 4 heads up

Do you guys use chambers for vocals? I choose plates 95% of the time. Capital Chambers is great - but I hardly ever use it. Ahh...what a happy surprise from UA. Didn't see any info about it in the email. I just love "UA Capitol Chamber" and use it a lot. Especially for motown and JB stuff. This should be fun to test when time allows. @johnkenn If you have "Capitol Chamber" you can get the same snare as in this demo you posted. Here I used 3 microphones in the mix, mono oh U87 that went to UA Capital Chamber (had room 4 and almost at minimum size with the SM80 microphone) kit U47 and BD Amb U47 dry, that's it! Will be very exciting to test their new Motown Chamber and hope that it will be a good compliment to Capitol.

Always fun to dive into someone's head and hear how they come up with their mixes. Bob Clearmountain seems to be such a humble person. Another one I come back to just for inspiration on MWTM is Tchad Blake. Love his vision and approach to the music and mixing. No rules!

It's a magic plugin from SR. I used it for a while, but have collected dust lately. I can not use it in Luna. It requires a lot of buffer size and Luna has fixed buffer "bummer". It can be used on a few channels. But if you want to use on more channels, it does not take long before Luna buffer says no. There is the weak link with Luna, Buffer size, up sampled plugins and graphics. Auto Align is another hero that is worth checking out. But likes PI better because it does not align the tracks, but keeps the distance intact but only corrects the phase reversal. Sound Radix makes smart plugins Yeah whenever there's a stereo miked acoustic, I use AA...I actually usually replace Kick (sorry lol) but if I use Kick In/Out, I usually use it there too. Haha...anything that helps the artistic purpose is the right thing to do, John! Yep, same here with kick in/out, there AA does the job perfectly. When PI got his rest, I had to work a little more in the studio with the phase. So there was something good about Luna fix buffer. I could not be a lazy worm

into a mix. It had kind've befuddled me for the longest so I just never used it. But I read up and then stuck it on Kick and Bass. And wow... All of those times I'd feel like a certain bass note would "disappear," I'd kinda attribute it to compression. But it was phase issues all along. Pi dynamically pulls the kick and bass into phase and now you can distinctly hear them punch together. I really, really love what it's done to the bottom. Highly recommend. Haven't really been able to use it on like acoustics and electrics - adds artifacts. Also - I was running a parallel send from my Drumbus to a Zener to add some oomph and dirtyness. But PT's delay comp won't compensate high enough for the send when I have Pi added...so I abandoned that for the time being. It's a magic plugin from SR. Luna is just the beginning of her journey. But I recognize that I am bothered by certain things with Luna (some things mentioned in the thread). So I decided to write and program in Logic and stick to Luna when tracking. Because there, the integration is top class. Until Luna is in full bloom, it works to be a hybrid daw worker (you have to keep the myelin in shape with all the different shortcuts. Maybe it helps to push forward on the dementia a bit I really can't make the jump until they incorporate outboard....but its costing me nothing to mess around with it. cheers Wiz Yeee ... That's exactly what I thought. Then I did more work in Luna as time went on, until you were so deeply involved with all the jobs in Luna. So with the shortcomings that a new program has, I have to completely blame myself there. Wish a few years ahead with Luna that has the important functions in place with optimization for computer dsp (no render meter on red), hw i / O, copy mix & channelstrip etc. With that said, I have daily fun with Luna when I tracking, wonderful intergradation with Apollo X, Plugins etc.

Keeps the thread alive for us few who are interested in drums 🤗 Continues to test the room. Made a simple and naked mix and used only some of the mics. No close mics and OH were needed for this mix. With only the room mics, Coles, Stam U47, Bd Amb, Unknown Mic and the room.
Mic and Pre:
2 X Coles 4038 Behind the Drums -> Capi VP26 -> Apollo X 16 Stereo Vanguard V44S Room -> Neve 33115 -> Apollo X 16 Stam SA47 Drum Kit -> Vintage Design CA81 -> Apollo X 16 Unknown Ribbon mic Room ”Dirty mic” -> Capi VP 26 -> Apollo X 16 GA-U47 Bd Ambience -> Capi VP26 -> Apollo X 16
Wonderful Ludwig Kit with my favorite snare that sounds good in all situations, both high or low pitch. Pearl "free floating" 6 1/2 ". Took two 16" crashes to HiHat (bottom Meinl 16 "Byzance Extra Dry and on top K- Zildjian 4 this one). 17" and 19” Meinl Byzance Extra Dry Crach.
Made a Drum Cover of the wonderful song by Chris Stapleton - Maggie's song

Isn't UA working on no latency inserts for hardware inserts for Luna with the Apollo's? Just like an Avid HDX system? Yes. As heavily requested as that feature is, I'd expect to have it pretty soon too. That day I'll be extra happy 🙌

Then I take you at your word and do it @ Ward-io-Scape Here we go... Hakan, I’m glad you responded (7 years later 😅) cause it alerted me to this great thread. Thanks for sharing your drum knowledge, man. Hahaha ... well-marinated answer from me 🤣 Trust me Ragan, I have not been on the lazy side in the meantime, but mostly studio building than drumming during these 7 years. But now it is finished with all the studios (besides the last thing I'm working on now in the video) and the music and drumming will have to take up more space again. @ Ward-io-Scape Thanks brother! Thought it might be a good "kick off" for an old thread with a wonderful fun topic Drums, Mixing, Playing.

Shakes life in a 8 year old thread. Have had time to build a few studios since the thread was started. Including this studio which will soon be finished and my last one (no more studio building 4 me in this life). Now I sit and try the room with different styles and see what can be improved with the last construction of the live studio that I and my colleague are building. The first "Silk Sonic" is completely dry with only close-ups and rear Coles 4038s + Mono OH. Hi-Hat is a pair of old A-Zildjian from the 70's and a wonderful snare that I just love, old Roger "Dyna-Sonic"...appropriate name on the snare for the band name Went on a bath towel on bd batter to get the dry cardboard sound. Took snare “shell mic which gets a dose of distortion This mix "The Bronx" I played 90% with the room microphones. The body of the kit is from the rear Coles 4038s + BD Amb for a little backup around 50-60Hz. The others were allowed to sit on the replacement bench OH, OH mono, Tom mic. As I still swung down on this shot. Took two 16 "Meinl Byance crash to Hi-Hat. Snare Pearl Free Floating Brass

Now it was a while since I terrorized u guys with some rattling cans. Please, feel free to terrorize us some more!! I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed that. When I heard that gigantic snare on its own in the sample, I thought "How is that ever going to work in a mix" and well, in a light arrangement it is just delicious! Then I take you at your word and do it @ Ward-io-Scape Here we go...

Some things you do in life are completely meaningless. This is one of them! But had to test how many API Channelstrip Native I could run at one time. Luna managed around 152 native instances and I had all functions pressed in the channel strip, Gate, Comp, Eq, Hi / Lo pass, Dyn SC etc. Then I tested how many DSPs I could run. I have 3 Apollo X, so it will be 6X3 = 18DSP chip. There were 54 instances. It's on my MBP the last one that did with intel. 2.4 GHz 8-Core i9 Exciting times with UA. Hope they integrate all the native plugins as they have done with API channelstrip. So you do not need to copy the settings from the plugs when swiping between dsp and native. Nice weekend
