I've built a 500 rev A. Sounds really nice. I've never heard an original blue stripe though, but i have worked with many different blackfaces (urei, ua, etc). To me, it sounds and behaves like an 1176. A tad grittier, even brighter in a way. The 2:1 ratio is really handy come tracking time cuz it gets a bit grabby quite easily. I like it a lot on vocals, but im not exactly discovering anything.. If you want to, i could run some files through it...

Once again i gotta give it to jsteiger I ordered some more yummy 28s, but this time i wanted to have an all gar2520 pair. I screwed up and ordered the 2520/1731 combo. I emailed him asking if it could be corrected before the order was processed and shipped. He emailed back lightning fast, as usual, saying it was all ok. Niiiiiiice.

It has been said before but CAPI has amazing service. Even though it's kits, jeff makes sure you get them up and running. He emails you back so fast you kind of get the feeling he was waiting for your email. Hairball has the same kind of service. I f*cked up a relay and mike not only figured out how to jump it so i could get it running, but he sent me a new one. Free of charge. All the way down to argentina..

I'm sure jeff's 526 will be hard to beat. We'll have to wait a bit for them, though. I'm mixing right now (taking a well deserved break!) and hairball's rev a 1176 (fet500) is amazing on lead vocals. Good old 10 and 2 puts them where they ought to be.

They look amazing. Pretty sure their performance will be even more impressive.
We'll be telling the next generation AEs we were there while jeff was creating these future classics.
Congrats mr. Steiger.

I started with this.. store.diyrecordingequipment.com/line2amp-passive-re-amplifier-kit/Trully as easy as it gets. And it's something really handy to have in the studio. If you dont have the need for a reamp box, Capi stuff is so well documented that it leaves pretty much all guessing aside. Opamps are a bit harder, but if i could anyone can. Mark my words. It gets addictive. Fast.

I use A7s 8) before that I mixed for over 10 years on Alesis Monitor Ones fed by their 200 w Amp. There I said it 8) cheers Wiz (two sets of monitors in over 20 years....) I had also worked with alesis (powered m1) before getting my current a7x. Once I hooked them up, I could not believe i had any work done on the alesis. Plus, I dont need to be checking my mixes everywhere!

Rev A is finally done and calibrated! Mike was incredibly helpful. He figured out how to jump that missing relay so i could have it working while the relay gets here. That kind of service alone is worth it!! Back to the sound of it, it is REALLY 1176. It does what is expected. And amazingly so. I've tried its usual tricks (10 & 2 vocals, mono room smash, snare comp) and so far i'm digging it. 2:1 ratio is a great feature and i can imagine going there quite often. It has a noticeable sonic imprint, that's for sure. But in a familiar way if it makes any sense... There's only one little thing I didnt like much: a few pots have a different feel to them. In short, great product and a superb service.

Ok, so here are a few pics of the process. Really straight forward once you get used to the "build map method". Gotta admit i missed chunger´s photo tutorials though. I just hope I get that relay thing sorted asap so I can give it a good run Sorting out resistors and slowly beginning to populate the PCB Main PCB ready Meter PCB done and in place Front panel

I dont seem to be able to attach photos with tapatalk.. Anyhow, i've got my rev a 99% there, except i screwed up a relay (oh the shame!) and I'm having a hard time sourcing it locally down here in argentina. As soon as I have it running and calibrated I'll let you guys know. Back to work in the meantime..

Rev A just got here. I'm busy as hell but that shouldn't stop me from getting some diy fun, should it? The record I'm mixing took almost a year to get tracked. It's safe to guess they are not in a hurry I hope to have some news for you guys within a couple of days..

Just finished my vp28 pair and put them over the mix of a song I'm working on which wasn't really 'gelling' for me yet..... I've heard samples before, but it's a whole other thing when you hear them on your own mixes.... wow. I'm a believer -- bass is tighter, snare is punchier, vocal sounds a little more polished, and everything is more glued. 2520 on input and 1731 on output btw. Same here!! I had just mixed an album when they got here. The producer had already approved most of the mixes. There were a few notes on a couple. Excited as I was to give hem a try, I strapped them before my (hw) buss comp. I couldn't believe what i was hearing. I had to double check everything. It took all the digital edge out of everything (sides mostly) and tightened the mid. It was as if those little bastards could mix better than me!! Needless to say, i ended up printing and adjusting the rest of the record!

From my experience, the tube tech cl1b would fit the bill. I've never heard anything by retro but the sta level has also such reputation. Ever tried any of those?

After building a couple of those puppies, all i can say is that the only thing more fun than the actual build is using them!!
Enjoy them!
