I found this wife my wife’s voice and our FleA 49. I like using our 1272 with the 49 on her. It wasn’t as peaky as the 1073 can be sometimes. What 1272 interpretation are you referring to as 1272 never was a mic pre. Would be interesting to hear your input on the two mentioned compared and exactly which 73 and 72’s are involved. I have a Dan Alexander Dual Class A preamp. It has original transformers and replacement boards. It can be a little thick on my voice sometimes, but has worked on Emily with the 49. I actually ended up switching her to the U67 these days. Still solidifying her preamp though. Now that the studio is nearly back together I need to have her shoot out some preamps.

I did a whole shootout between a FleA 47 with the F7 and my FleA 49 with the F47/49. That FleA 49 is the one with the lighter low end. Sincere thanks again for sharing and for the info...I remember that one from quite awhile ago. Watching it again confirms what i love about the 49-type, and I appreciate your end notes as well; I'm in a similar place where the F47 suits my voice better than the M7 probably, but it's hard not to love what the M7 does. I also hear something amazing in the AC701k...amazing enough that I'd consider shelling out for it, but then again I really really love the mic I have. Again, very sincere thanks! I went down the AC701 rabbit hole a couple of years ago. It adds something gorgeous. I did eventually grab a lead on them, but they were hard to track down. After tracking them down, I kind of let it go. I figured there are some vintage M49s out there that deserve them. I'd love to try the new M49V, which uses the same tube as the FleA, the 6S2B. One day maybe. I can't justify it when I love the way my FleA 49 sounds on me, especially the one with the lighter low end.

So Net Net Bottom Line... Are the M49's (Including/probably all Incarnations)... A mellower 47/48? Even more than the M7 capsuled 47/48 versions? I don't want anyone to fall asleep hearing my somewhat soothing (sometimes) almost Sominex tones. LOL! Thanks, Chris I had a Flea 47 with the M7 capsule for about 6 months, and the Flea 49 (with K47 capsule)...much more pronounced low mids..."richness" I suppose...but also overall sounds a little more saturated and harmonic to me, but I'm not sure if I'd think so if I had them side by side. FleA 49 with the F7/AC701k and the FleA 249 with the F49/6S2B were both recorded at Callistro Music one after the other, with an ultra clean preamp I can't remember the name of, the FleA 49 with the F49/6S2B was recorded at my place through my stock Apollo Silverface preamps (I can't remember if this is mine or the Vintage King demo I tried), and the M49C which has a K47 was recorded at Barbershop Studios through an SSL preamp.

....My understanding is the original M49 (M49A) had the roll off, the M49B did not or had the option to be purchased without it, and the M49C had it again, and that along with the change in how the tube is biased made it a bit more open still. I have heard experts who know better than me concur with this and heard others refute it. When Neumann release their M49V, one of the original articles about it said they were using the M49C circuitry, tuned to sound like the M49A, with the option to not have the roll off like the M49B.
...I personally preferred the F47 to the F7 in the FleA 49. I do like their F7 in the FleA 47. I know some people feel its a touch dark, but it sounds a ton like one of the U47s I've worked with which had an original M7.
...their frequency response is very close from the top end until about 100 Hz. I had asked Ivan about it. He confirmed what the company build notes said, and told me if I took it apart and took some photos he would confirm whether or not the one had the built in roll off. He also offered to match them if I sent them to him...
....I really like the rolled off one. It's become my primary vocal mic, especially for the operatic stuff. The second one I think works better for the crooning stuff.
Thanks so much for all that info! Digging around online, I stumbled into one of your tube testers videos comparing the capsules in Flea 47/48's, and I was really surprised at the difference between the capsules...like you (and thanks to you!), I much preferred the M7 in those mics. The K47 was "authoritative" to be sure, but the M7 was instant nostalgia. It unfortunately made me think I need one of those some day again. I'm going to email Ivan now that you mention it just to make sure that what I'm hearing jives with the design, but I'd bet it does. I love the mic, and I doubt I'd undo that filter now that I've used it some. I'm also glad you mentioned 100hz, that's the number I've come up with in a way...where I hear the filtering is just below that...it seems like between 60-100hz is where I hear that filter doing more than I expected. Again, thanks for all the pertinent info and also for taking time out to share sounds and reviews. They've come in really handy! That’s a nice video, and thank you for the compliment, but I’m not the Tube Test guy. Johnny and Natalie are great people and we’ve been chatting about collaborating for years. I did shoot out a pair of FleA 47s, one with an F7 and one with an F47. I just haven’t posted it yet. I have some clips of a FleA 49 with an F7, F49, and F7 with an ac701 tube. They are not scientific though. Let me see if I can find them.

I received the 4 layer sound reduction blackout curtains today. They are very nice and are pretty thick. Thicker than even my nicer moving blankets. I definitely think they will help with some of the reflections in the room, and maybe a little outside noise. I don't have a crazy loud neighborhood, so It should do what I need. I won't be in the new place for a few weeks, but I'll let everyone know how it goes.
BTW, If you order from Amazon, make sure you are looking at the correct listing. All the Nicetown listings say sound reducing curtains. You need to make sure you are buying the 4 layer or 3 layer sound reducing curtains. The first set I ordered were just plain thin curtains. Sound reducing?... yeah right.

Neumann KU100 dummy head user here. Binaural mics offer natural sound by using omni mic capsules. To have a proper and real binaural sound the pinnae of the plastic formed "ear" has to be correct and the microphone may NOT reside on the outside of the plastic "ear." Neumann measured 1200 human ears and fashioned the rubber compound "ear" on the KU-100 to be an average of these 1200 measurements. In the Neumann head, the mics are INSIDE the rubber ear in a engineered canal that mimics the hearing mechanism inside the human head. These 3DIO mics really only work with the DPA 4060 capsules which are full range. the regularly supplied 3DIO mic capsules don't have response over 10kHz. so they do not record the required overtones of the source sound. Move to the Neumann KU100 or to the Aachen Head to experience genuine binaural sound. Thanks!

I’m also a fellow ASMR “user” I guess. I’ve been following it a long time since it was the only thing that helped me relax for years and I’m still so surprised that it’s gotten as big as it has. I had the 3Dio mic for a year or so. The issue with many capsules, 3DIO included, is that they’re too bright on most high SPL sources. So I’d occasionally use it for auxiliary stuff like shakers or ambience on amps, piano, etc. but not nearly as many places as I’d have liked. And that’s why the Neumann KU-100 is still king. Just a more vivid, detailed effect and useful everywhere. I don’t own it but I’ve used it a lot at a friend’s place. Despite the price, I hope I can get one eventually. It’s a lot of fun. Totally helps me shut my mind off when I'm having issues getting to sleep. lol. I totally get it. I also love sound bowls recorded this way.
Good to know about the 3Dio. Did you have the FS XLR or the Pro?

So I admit it, during the pandemic I discovered ASMR videos. While much of it is not up my alley, I found that some could help me chill out and relax. I've got a pretty bad case of ADHD. While many of these stereo videos were simply done with a Zoom with built in XY mics, I've seen quite a few people using dual condensers, and lately a bunch of these creators started using Binaural Microphones, particularly the 3DIO mic. These are a take on the Neumann KU 100 Dummy Microphone.
The 3DIO mic has (3) versions. The first is battery powered with a 3.5mm out. The second is their FS XLR version which has dual XLR outs and is powered by phantom power. The 3DIO FS XLR is only $649.
The 3Dio FS XLR microphones contain integrated Primo EM172 microphone capsules. These actually spec out ok.
They also have a pro version which uses the DPA 4060 CORE hi-sensitivity capsules. You pay a premium for these better capsules. This sells for $1,999.
Now to my questions.
What applications would you use these kinds of mics for? Would you use them in a room in conjunction with other mics? I'm just curious about the application for these binaural mics and would love thoughts from those you have or do use them, especially as we all start to journey into spatial audio.

There is no "proof". But going from a $6.99 blanket to a $20 dollar blanket is substantial. Easy to feel, easy to hear. sorry, maybe I missed it but where is the $20 blanket? I linked the Harbor Freight blanket mainly due to its size (40"x72") which I thought would cover a window just about right. I haven't actually purchased these or even looked at them. I have other moving blankets, that I use for moving stuff, and I know there are various weights. Certainly not opposed to a $20 blanket but won't hold my breath for a deal like winetree found. But everything in this thread seems to be over $100/panel. I have a few of those harbor freight blankets here from my move. They don't do much. I have a few much thicker moving blankets that I have been using to make a portable booth for some session work I've been doing that are much better. I would have to look up where I got those, but they were more like $20-$30 each.

I am not foolish enough to believe the “Soundproof” jargon, which is why I called them sound reducing. That’s not a bad idea drbill. I may go that route at some point. I could probably stick two of my existing panels on the ledge when recording if needed.

Looks like we'll be in our new home within the next few weeks, which has lead me to start finalizing my plans for the new studio. The room is a touch smaller than my previous room, but with higher ceilings. So I have enough GIK panels to hang, and may grab a couple more if needed to treat the ceiling, which wasn't really feasible in the last studio. The new room has a large double window. While I can throw a couple of my GIK panels on stands to be moved around as needed, I wanted to get a decent set of sound reducing curtains, both to curtail the bleed from outside (and the bleed from my loud voice for my neighbor's sake), and possibly to help with some absorption. Does anyone have any recommendations for brands that do this well?
While searching I came across Nicetown blackout, thermal insulated, sound reducing curtains. These claim to have a 15db reduction in sound, and there are some decent deals on Amazon for them. Reviews seem to be pretty decent on these.
Originally I came across Moondream 3-in-1 Sound Insulation, Blackout, and Thermal Insulation Curtains. They claim a 7db reduction in sound, but reviews seem a bit mixed on them.
I'd love to hear any recommendations or experiences that anyone may have had.

The MK67 with the Neumann BV12 conversion is a wonderful sounding microphone. I have found the low end is a touch lighter than I expected it to be. Could be my choice of tube. Otherwise, it is a fantastically balance microphone. Emily sounds particularly great on it. I recorded a fantastic saxophone solo with it. My brother did a pretty awesome pop vocal on it for a project he was working on. It's been my go to for myself when doing pop/rock. I haven't had it next to a reissue. I've had it next to the original BU67. The MK67 had a slightly bigger sound. The BU67 had a bit more focus. That said, I really want to grab the BU67/269 V2. The more open sound should give me more of what I was looking for in both the 67 and 269 mode. Hoping to grab one when I'm in my new studio. In transition at the moment. It will be nice to have a 269 style mic again too. I had to sell my RMS269 when my computer died a few years back. I really like that sound on my pop/rock vocals.

I really liked #2. It had some real grit, but was smoother on the top. My guess is that's the BAE, and #1 is the Warm.

Only listening on my cans, but here are my thoughts. B7 has a touch more mojo. It's smoother. I like the way it handled the high end a little better. My guess is that's the Stam SA47. The A7 is a touch cleaner. Not bad, but I preferred the B7.

Just be aware of AEA’s 10 week back log. Otherwise they produce all of the parts of the RCA 44, so any replacements would still have the mic looking identical.

I've seen Michael Buble a few times. Emily saw him right before he blew up too. He doesn't need any help, but the engineers, or more likely, the studios are pushing "the sound." but why? Just for the vibrato control functions? Which begs the question: Which is worse, the unrealistic pitch correction or the dehumanizing vibrato removal robotic sounding aspect ? The people who control our industry are not musicians and not engineers. They are business people and they hold the real power.
