For my Audio Technica phones I bought velour replacements all around for those crazy sweat making machines and cracking with age pleather originals which have made for me a totally different audio experience, one of comfort and a pleasurable, no sweat ease of use affair. Did the velour replacements change the sound? I tried some other 3rd party ear pads that were way more comfortable, but they altered the sound way to much.

I'm not crazy about the top with either of those. I find my 650's to be too dull, and 7506's to be really harsh. The 650's are my favorite if I have to wear headphones for long periods of time. I've used them for tracking live projects when I'm setup in a bad room backstage. But, it's hard for me to judge sibilance, shakers and other hi percussion elements with them. Same for mouth clicks and other noises. I'm still looking for a all around pair of headphones I like. I would like to try the 600's as well as the Shure 1840's and the AT-R70x. My current choice of closed headphones are the ATM-40X, I have some 50x as well, but they are too hyped IMO. The 40X are less hyped, although still a little too bright. My main issue with the AT headphones, is they get uncomfortable really quick. For amps, I have a SPL Phonitor mini, the one in my Dangerous Monitor ST, and a Grace M9XX that I use for travel/home. I had some Audeze LCD-X for a while, but I didn't use them enough to justify having them. They had the best bottom of any headphone I've heard, but the upper mids and top was strange to my ears. Also they were way to heavy to wear for very long. I would add, that I've yet to be able to do a mix completely in headphones, but I do like to check mix's in headphones, and I use them for doing revisions all the time if I'm away from the studio. Try the Shure 940. I'm planning on trying a few of the shure's. I'll definitely try those.

Might I ask where you found those? Sounds like a great thing. Sorry, it was a couple of years ago and I don't recall exactly where I got them, but it was from somewhere local here in Switzerland. Here is a link from an outfit that offers the same colors that I could have grabbed. I chose maroon ones. The velour makes it possible to wear them for a very much longer time than the stock. www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/AT-135409020-VELVET

The highs seem a tiny tad rounded but it doesn't matter to me as they are for tracking only. Nobody ever complains about it.

I been mixing on HD for years. I switch between HD600 and HD650 for mixing, popping on the AKG K701 occasionally. Then playing back on laptop, car stereo, consumer HD and buds. I have nice monitors but a shitty box of a room. My kick drum tends to be hot when playing back in the car so I try to be conscious of that. I like loud vocals so I am aware that HD can affect how that plays out. Hence, why I play back on different mediums to see how it translates. Still learning but figuring things out along the way...

What amp do you use? I use 650s and 702s daily. Love them both for different reasons. Very very bright haha Exactly. Sony MDR series headphones for deaf drummers.

What difference do you hear between the Sennheisers (600::650)? And did you mean "AKG" on the 701?

Yes, I meant akg and fixed the post, thanks. I find the 600 more neutral and the 650 a little more "sweetened"/hifi sounding. I'll mix on the HD600 and then give a listen on the 650. sometimes the 650 will reveal a little more low end info. In general I view the 650 as more of a pleasure listening HD than a clinical HD but both are excellent.

I have just found that my Topping DX7S > Drawmer MC2.1 headphone amp > Massdrop HD6XX (Senn 650) sounds incredible. I've never heard a headphone sound this good, it feels like a discovery.
I'd be tempted to try some mixing because this sounds so good. Probably more perfect than my semi-treated small room. It's a more idealized sound.
The built in amp in the Topping wasn't cutting it, but the Drawmer can easily drive these 650s to their potential.

I like the 650's for hearing the bottom and the Q701's for the top.

My ATH-M50x does that 😜

^^This^^ Someone mentioned that the ATH-M50x is a bit hyped in the bottom, and I tend to agree. But I would prefer that over not having enough bass. As is, over time my ear can learn to compensate for the hype. The music I mix is for the most part acoustic and doesn't reach down much below 50hz, at least not functionally. I think if I was mixing a lot of boom and thump, the M50's might be a poor choice.
