You ever get the Bob Rock thing? No. I wasn't quite sold on it. Still think about it though. I'm so in love with the V-Drums/SD3 combo that I'm hungry for kits. Bought the Custom and Vintage on sale, basically for one kit. There's a config or 2 that I really like in the stock SD3 sounds. I hate that the friggin' ridiculous cathedral sized room they tracked in is cooked into every mic but I can work around it sometimes. Which V drums did you get?

Hey Wiz, SD3 and VH11 module work great together. I have an A2E kit. SD3 is way ahead in the vdrum game. Bob Rock expansion is really good but I still like progressive the best.
The new mini looks good too....my 2012 one is still going strong for now.

You could get a 3.2 Ghz 6 core with 16GB RAM for $1299. You could get the 8Gb one instead and get 32Gb Ram elsewhere and replace. Looks like the Ram is upgradeable... hopefully this is the start of a new approach. With my studio running happily on my i7 mid-2012 MacBook Pro, one of these could be a nice upgrade. I’m not really using samples/VI’s at all .. going for a more natural vibe. The only issue I have with my MBP is the fan noise as its a single room studio. I could make a silent box for a mini ...

Maxed out 2012 mini here. Still going strong. I’d be down for another mini when the time comes. Though I have noticed it sometimes has trouble with running my display (it’s a super wide) as there is no video card.
Do these new minis still have HDMI and Ethernet ports?

Yup - still have those ports - looking at specs you can also get an upgraded Ethernet port.. not really sure what that would be used for? My home rig (which I’m using more and more) is a 2 generation old mini with an i7 and 16g of ram and just like everybody else is saying - it’s been a beast. I got that one at a very good price with the lowest specs aside from the processor, and upgraded the ram and hard drive. It’s rackmounted in a road case and I have a 16 input rig I can take to peoples houses and do full band recordings. I love the thing. The specs on this new one are pretty amazing. Still not happy about how flimsy a connection thunderbolt 3 seems to be,, but nothing can be done about that. Just wish they made it more solid, or possibly a locking connection.

Wow. Nice. No GPU though. Not super needed for audio though. The new Mac Pro is supposed to come out next year though. Think I'll wait for that. This would be a nice home based computer though with an external GPU. More details please!! I still love my 2012 Mac Pro Westmere (the last of the true towers) but I know it won't last forever!

I don’t know about that, I think it’s going to be supported longer than you think. There are a lot of video guys who hate the whole trash can format and the fact the IMac pro means they have no choice in monitor. As long as we have manufacturers who support PCIE that thing will be supported. Many look at this new Mac mini as a huge disappointment, the lack of video prossor and the fact that they didn’t go I9 has a bunch wondering if Apple even cares anymore. While the consumer laptop chips Apple uses these days have great performance there are those who would love to see a New Macpro with Intels too server Chips like in those cheese graters. My first Generation with a Chip upgrade, 32 bit videocard and a firmware hack still holds it own.

I'm using a SNS EVO server over 10G ethernet. This allows me to run a PT session, a Pyramix session, and have our video team working in multicam 4k off the same server at the same time. Super fast. Can transfer 30Gb of data in under a minute haha love it. Wow. Nice. No GPU though. Not super needed for audio though. The new Mac Pro is supposed to come out next year though. I don't have a lot of details but have read a few articles that Apple is going to finially update the damn Trashcan design and it will once again be modular. Thank god.. That said, knowing apple it'll be modular but all custom pieces and you have to buy direct from them haha More details please!! Upgrading the cheese graders with modern GPUs and maxing out the RAM and they are still very powerful machines. However, the motherboard is getting dated, no Thunderbolt support, not even USB3. That hurts a lot. But no matter what you can build a PC that is 4x more powerful these days for less than half the cost. Win10 just sucks ass.. Hopefully the newest Mac Pro finally speaks to the professional market...but without that freaking iMac Pro price..good lord.

When it comes to the concept of “pro” Tim Cook era Apple is very different from Steve Jobs era, Jobs always wanted to have something like his NEXT era stuff in the line, something that could compete with a real server. Cook seams to see Apple as more and more of a consumer company. I don’t think he gets how many IMacs were sold because somebody who had a Macpro or G5 tower recommend them. It was sort of like how many 914 Porsche sold when the 917 dominated the world of sports car racing. Now all the cash comes from iTunes, IPhones and watches.

That thing gets as expensive (or more) as an iMac once you load it up and buy the peripherals.

The new iPad pro has more processing power than most laptops. That's where we are really headed honestly. Mobile computing...well we are already there. But it has not been embraced fully within the professional market. But like everything in the tech world, prosumer is far more important now.

Looks like you can upgrade the mini RAM for much less(duh) than apple. Can get a mini with the 3.2 6core processor and a 128TB HD for just a hair over 1000 bucks. Spend about 300 on new ram for 32gb or more and you're golden.
External hard drives via TB.

Looking at this more and more as I have a nice PC case and PSU already just needs new updates to the MOBO, Proc, RAM, SSD and Im good. Just worried it will be a hassle all the time.

I initially installed Sierra and did all the maintenance updates w/o a single hassle. A couple of weeks ago I upgraded to Mojave (skipping High Sierra) w/o a single hassle. I think the trick is to: 1. know what you're doing (duh!) 2. start with the right mobo/processor. This is really important. I'm running a Lenovo TS140 (xenon 3.2 mHz) that cost about $175. They are bare-bones servers meant for modifications. I upgraded with: SSD, 32 gigs RAM, video card, PSU, and a few HDDs (for automated backups). I think I have about $1100 total investment in that box, and the damn thing screams!

Curious to see what can be qualified as a system that "screams".

Not that I have time for that anymore.. More research to do I supposed.

Sadly now, Hackintosh might be a limited lifespan, as Apple announced this year they are moving away from using Intel processors and x86, building their own ARM processors. The change is not until 2020, but bye bye Hackintosh once they start controlling more of what software will/won't run without the approved hardware. I'm guessing the rollout will be gradual, but it'll be interesting how things will be affected.
