Go there, listen to them there, buy all of em if they are working. Then listen again back at your own studio and keep the 2 best. Then sell the rest at market value and essentially you'd get two for the price of 1. Smart man. Just be sure none of capsules are fucked. Pretty easy to tell.

Funny, I did pick the 84. I really liked the $49 ISK in omni on the acoustic bass a lot. I imagine it wouldn't hurt to have a couple of those around if you track lots of acoustic instruments together.

I got pics and info back, he now only has five left (not surprising at this price). I bought a pair (non consecutive serials) of 1970's silver ones with the Tuchel connectors and XLR adaptors for €1400. Seems legit, has a Belgian Broadcasting email address etc. I'll shoot them out with the 3U Warbler 127 Cardioid Flat, and if they lose/don't sound much better, I can always flip them for more than I paid. Not ready to jump eight hours there and back on a train to try them in person. So he still has three black ones left, they are XLR and are more recent (1980s) but look more beat up/have no logo badges. Anyone who is interested can find him on Audiofanzine.

I was surprised by the iSK Pearl, though. It sounded pretty nice in that example.

The Warbler didn’t last 5 minutes in my studio, and that’s before I got the KM84s. On acoustic guitar, it was bested even by a cheap Avantone SDC. I know some people really love these mics, but they stand no chance against the KM84.

I was gonna grab that mint pair of 84’s on reverb a few weeks ago until I got the Soyuz 0-13 demo in next to my km56’s and old Schoeps. No tubes but damn they surprised me. Black Pair w all capsules for around 1700 bucks

For me it was a little bit do you prefer guac or salsa on your nacho's.?. The KM84's had stronger mid's which will help them cut slightly better but they also sound a little boxy for the same reasons compared to the ISK's which sound a little more "natural"..
Quality wise? I'd say they're on par with each other, for e.g. some SE mic's automate a head shaking movement with a noooo..! But all the ISK's I've come across are as good as anything else in my collection, just "different" they tend to be relaxed microphones which is nice as a contrast but not as mic's to use on everything..
Blending a Pearl with a KM84 I believe would sound pretty fantastic, you'd get natural with a side of epic mids..!

The Soyuz 0-11 has a tube, and they're a little rounder sounding than the 0-13, but I prefer the 0-13 on most everything. If you offered me both, I'd take the 0-13.

I've never used Neumann's KM84's oddly, before I partnered with a local practice room / studio I rented space from various locations that had their own mic lockers.. KM184's were quite popular, although one studio had a pair of KM56's..
Mainly doing rock / metal I can't say I had much use for them but an extremely talented singer (with great mic technique) strolls through and we tried the usuals like U87's, M149, Gefell UMT70S, SM7B.. They were all good (bar the SM7B meh) but I knew we could do better, so I said let's try an SDC and it needs to be pointing down toward your top lip, avoid the temptation to sing directly into it..
One of the best vocal recordings I've heard..
I believe I'd read some informative posts by the wise Bob Ohlsen about Motown singers and SDC's, decided to give it a try and very glad I did. Ever since if the singer was good enough my "go-to" mic's have always been SDC's like the KM56 and Schoeps CM-6, some times LDC's (even on acoustic it appears) does the job better but SDC's are so overlooked, probably because they require a lot of aptitude to get right.

One thing I don't often hear of the 84 being used for is electric guitar. I don't know how it might fare with a Marshall stack or a Twin Reverb cranked, but on amps between 5 and 30 Watts, they're killer, and I way prefer them to an SM57 for electric guitar.

Yowza. Really didn't care for the 84s on acoustic and snare drum here. Least favorite each time.
I could see liking these on overs, though. I enjoy the detail and openess in the tube versions.

There are SOOooo many mics I prefer to the SM57 on electric guitar with the occasional exception of certain very high volume stuff where the "natural compression" can be a bonus. Otherwise I nearly always prefer an M201, one of the smaller RE models (10,11, 15, 16), or even sometimes my Earthworks measurement mic. Sometimes even the brass capsule AKG C12A. 409s can be pretty nice as well.

Try backing the KM84 off to at least 18", preferably 2 ft, give or take a bit on acoustic guitar. Most people place their mic way too close.
On snare I use the KM 84 micing the side of the drum, a couple of inches offset from the vent, and about 2" from the shell. On my wood Ludwig it gives a very natural sound and you can balance top and bottom with the height of the mic. I no longer like the sound of micing the top head, or getting the mic too close to the head.

I love this technique, John. I never feel the need to mic the bottom of the snare when the technique you're describing is executed properly.

Yeah you get the whole snare. Top, bottom and shell. The other advantage of using a KM84 on a snare is the off axis hi-hat bleed doesn't sound like garbage as it does with a SM57.
