I posted this on that other forum but wanted to share with all my nerds.... I bought a Teegarden Audio Magic pre a while back on a whim and now wonder why these are not better known? I have had most every preamp but this box is knocking much of my other gear down in shoot outs.... My subjective description of this unit is as such.... Sources sound large and clear with a character akin to a great tube design with low negative feedback. (clearer high end though with slightly quicker transients) This unit is not antiseptic sounding like a Millenia nor is it a overt distortion profile like a Neve or API. In practical application tracks cut with this pre sound exciting and large with great impact. I need less processing at mix compared to a recent project I cut on a 80 Series Neve. After making records for so long I will have to say I am rethinking the manner in which we Fetishize vintage gear and its familiar distortion. I would highly encourage my slutty friends to demo this unit record some tracks and then mix them to understand the implications of this great design... To put the Magic pre in context think the circle of technical minds around Sheffield labs and the folks behind the March MSS-10. Bret Teegarden is a veteran Engineer in the trenches and is building some serious Sh!t.... I love people pushing not only high fidelity but musicality in balance. I think this box is a modern classic and I need 12 more channels... www.teegardenaudio.com

I've been interested in these or the NPNG's, both look amazing for big and clean.

I asked the Rep to send me the Teegarden "Fat boy" DI box, to check out, but he is taking his sweet time. Though, I am still interested in checking it out. I trust your ears nomatic

Thanks Buddy! I love the Fatboy DI Adam as it is all I use live and in the studio for Bass now.... The magic pre is a steal at its price and tracks sound finished very quickly just like the effect the JCF Audio Ad-8s have on the level of conversion. I would say the Teegarden is a similar design philosophically to what Josh is doing... Clear big and natural......

What what what? 4 channels of "JCF level" quality preamps for $2,250 USD???
Let's here some samples through that AD8 and do a couple different situations/instruments/vocals if you can... thanks!
You really think they are in the same league as my beloved NPNG?

I have not used the NPNG actually which is one of the only I can think of...... I feel the pres hang with the best of the best in the Big and clear camp. I am on deadline with a record but when I catch up I will do some samples..

I’m gonna hammer the Rep again...if nomatic is hearing what I think he is hearing, these Teegarden pres are going to be way different than the NPNG. Time will tell..

I trust your ears nomatic Adam, We have a temendous amount of product out for demo right now in various cities. We are building new product as fast as we can to keep up with demand, plus Cinemag has been backordered on laminations for transformers for several months now. All all that together adds up to sweet time I am trying to get a couple of demo units back this week to send your way so I won't have to dip into new stock. Thank you for your patience.

I'm not sure I could have described the characteristics of our preamp design any better. You encapsulated my whole reason for releasing these to the market. It's all about the music.

So how does the demo work ? Demos are sent to qualified Pro Audio dealers when available. I hope that is the info you were asking about. Cool! Does Vintage King Los Angeles have any demos?

I have become friends with Bret Teegarden over the last few years as I purchased one of the early Fatboy Tube DI's and have used it religiously on the road and in the studio, and also added the Magic Pre to my studio arsenal. The gear sounds amazing and Bret provides fantastic personal service! Do yourself a favor and getcha some Teegarden Audio gear!

I just pulled the trigger on one after all the good words here and seeing a YouTube video of a guy who put together a little jam with nothing but a 57 into the Magic Pre. I liked the tones so thought why not. Only 2 channels for now, figure if it works for me I can investigate getting 2 more added into it as 4 channels in 1RU would be perfect for the travel rig.

Mine arrived today when I got home from the studio. I only have an SM7 and an AEA N22 to play with at home but so far sounding nice, big and balanced with just me playing a nylon string and singing at the same time, preferring it to the BAE 1073mpf sitting next to it. I'll take it to the studio for a tracking session tomorrow so I'll have a better idea what it can do but so far I'm liking it.
