Tell me... what are your go-to delays and why? Do you use any plugin that has a ducking feature a-la TC2290? My go-tos: - Echoboy: sounds great, but I don't like the interface much. It's not very inspiring, and there are too many options and choices. It might be childish but I'd like it way more if it somehow graphically referenced the units that it's emulating. Still, it's probably the one to learn inside and out so the interface doesn't get in the way.
- Audiothing Outer Space: a thing of beauty! It's saved me from buying a real Space Echo, which I think are overpriced these days and I hear the maintenance is a pain
- Hardware Watkins Copicat: it's a bit noisy but I like it! I have the solid state version. Can't beat it for vibe and authenticity!
More options in my arsenal: - Echoboy Jr: looks a lot better than the full version, less options (though probably not the "best of" emulations), missing a crucial feature for me (tap tempo).
- Softube Tube Echo: not bad, maybe too warm, I have to test it more.
- I also own whatever is bundled in Logic, which is not half bad I think.
I'm also thinking about getting a Fulltone SSTE, but the dollar/euro exchange is not great at this time... |

Not a huge fan of plugin delays because they never have enough cool vibe for me.
But echo boy was a fav for a while. I really dig Timeless2 by FabFilter. Super cool delay. But my god a ton of options on it too. Hell Half the time depending on what im doing I just use Avids built in one. Super simple to use and does the job good. Just no character. So i usually add some in with something after it.
Hardware though, is great. Even some cheap guitar pedals do stuff that is awesome. The Yamaha SPX90ii is a great lil unit because is so shitty is just sounds...good. haha! The early AD/DA 16bit converts on those things just make your returned signal sound worse then the orginal, but in a good way similar to tape..though nothing like tape either. But still. I really enjoy using that box and keep meaning to buy a couple as they are super cheap too. Even the 900 is cool. Comes with other effects too but I always just used the delays.
PCM42 is king though however...way overpriced and is only a mono unit. Bitchen on guitar though and I liked using it as a predelay multing into a EMT140
the new 2290 plugin that comes with the hardware controller looks killer. Id buy that.

PCM42 is the crown prince TC 2290 is the king Here it’s Yamaha 1500’s Roland SDE 1000’s for some attitude TC D2 it reminds me should have sold a Kidney for that pair of 2290’s about 6 years ago. I used Echoboy as my go-to for years. Still love it but something about Slate Repeater really grabs me. Heard it the second I demo'd it. So that's my mainstay now.

- PCM90 w/extra voice card
- 2x Roland SDE-1000
- Unicord EC-100 stage Echo (have not used it yet)
- WEM Copicat (needs a head)
- BOSS RE-20 "Space Echo" pedal (guitar pedal)
- Couple of other BOSS guitar delays
- Alesis Micro-verb
The PCM-90 and the SDE-1000s get most of the recording work. No plugins.

Echo Farm is the only plug I want to use. Didn't know there was a 2290 plug. Will try to check that out. EchoBoy doesn't generally work for me.
Hardware wise, it's the same thing - Line6 Echo Pro which is essentially a hardware Echo Farm and my favorite most used hardware delay. Also like the D1500 Yamaha's, and the Roland SDE 3000. Analog wise it's the Yamaha E1010.

Waves H-Delay is quite nice.
I mainly record jazz and acoustic music so no evident delays expected but I can tune it for subtle image enhancement, old school slap back echo and early reflections

Echoboy rules. I also use Logic's Space Designer and Delay Designer and Redline Reverb by 112db, plus a few others. On the outboard side, an RE-201, Guruamp's Echosex (very nice!), and some stompboxes, MXR carbon copy etc. Not to forget my trusty Revox A77 and PR99. My tech has a few old Dynacord tape echos, hmmm...

Had lots over the years but I've settled on the Eventide H9 for hardware and a variety of plugins depending on the situation. I do miss my RE-201!

Echo Boy or NastyDLA for software, hardware it's the Watkins Copicat or my Memory Boy. Theoretically you could do it all with EchoBoy all the time, but some things are faster and/or more fun.

My go-to delays software-wise are Waves H-Delay which is a really outstanding and phenomenal sounding plugin, especially for its price.
When I need some more sophisticated delays I use FabFilters Timless2. It's way more complex and has filters and whatnot on board.
Hardware-wise, I am the lucky owner of an AMS DMX 15-80S which I bought two years ago for a real bargain. Still can't believe I found it for this price in 2016.

Is anyone using the Strymon timeline delay. I like how Vance Powell uses his guitar pedals for some of his effects. It gets dirty, and ugly sometimes, but fits the track with the right kind of music.

I'm always cursing at the delays in DP, because they are a pain to set up yet they have to be used for recall repeatability now that everyones session involves 23 remixes over 2 years. I like their psuedo-stompbox analog delay the best for 'obvious' usage. Given the choice, I use my RE-201 Space Echo, or a Deltalab DL-4, or an ADA D1280. Because that's what I have! The Deltalab and ADA tend to live on plate sends for pre delay.

 Go to that's always patched to a pair of sends for printing delay "parts." The additional delay types get used as often as the SDD-3000 mode, they all run through that SDD-3000 preamp. ITB, I'll use the moogerfooger delay or Soundtoys EchoBoy for analog models, PrimalTap, Eventide UltraChannel or iZotope DDLY for digital, or IK Tape Echo. |

Wow, that pedal looks cool. I'm assuming you use it on all sorts of things besides guitar, yes? I'm wondering how that would stack up against the T-Rex Replicator and/or Fullton Echoplex. An analog tape delay is on my bucket list of gear to get, but maybe this fits just as well? |

I have never encountered any digital Space Echo emulation that works right. They always miss something, usually two or more somethings. That includes the Boss pedal.

I've been using PrimalTap more lately in place of Echoboy. I also love my Moog 500 series delay, probably should've got another while they were still around. Having midi control for it is nice when changing sessions.

Primal Tap is pretty great.
Love my Boss DM-2.
The OTO BIM is a nice stereo delay trying to capture the old school sound.

Oh man there's an empty spot in my 500 lunchbox that really wants to have one of those! They're nowhere to be found these days... Yeah, I heard it was something with not finding enough of the bucket brigade chips that passed QC. Shame as it's a fun delay, gets pretty wild when you abuse the LFO. Hopefully it'll be brought back. |
