One thing I've not had good luck wth is info from DHL. They'd told Stam that my ADG was going to be delivered today, but the whole time, tracking only said like "arrived at facility" in Chile or something like that. Then today I got a txt from DHL that they'd attempted delivery and couldn't deliver, which never actually happened. I called DHL customer service and they said, "No, no one has attempted delivery. It's not even in your town yet. It'll be another week." Was all pumped up for some ADG'n. It was like that with the 1073MPA though. Tracking never had any info and then one day it just showed up, despite alerts I'd gotten to the contrary. Not to get nosey, but are you within the Continental U.S. ? I've had 4 Stam products shipped to me (Connecticut) from Chile and it's always only taken between 4-5 days.

Kinda weird since others (like you) seem to have smooth sailing with DHS shipments from Stam. My ADG supposedly shipped on 4/18 and will supposedly now get here 5/2. Oh well.

DHL seems to get here early with the Stam stuff here on the US east coast.

"Hi Cam, I know you're really busy, but I'm dying to get my 76ADGs . . . and really need them too. Please help me!" The Stam folks are really serious about doing good work and improving their reputation with regards to delivering on promises and communicating better. Take care!

The ADG finally arrived today. It does actually exist and is in my rack. First impressions are mostly very good. Looks and feels good. Really cool to have the 3 sonic vibes in one box. My only complaint upon some initial testing is that it lets quite a bit of initial spike through. Is that happening with anyone else's? Like, if you want to really control a vocal with, say, classic Dr. Pepper settings or whatever, are you getting hefty spikes at the beginnings of some phrases? The overall tone is a little sweeter and classier than the WA76s I think (I'll need to do some blind testing to confirm that) but man, if you wanna just clamp a vocal in place with the WA76, you can do it. The ADG isn't controlling things that way. All the other 1176s I've had here (Urei, Mohog, Hairball) have been able to clamp down and really hold a vocal in place. Makes me wonder if something is up. Johnkenn jcoutu1 kcatthedog How's your guys' experience been with vocals?

I wondered if this is what you were talking about when you first got yours. Hmm. I love the tone but I need it to be able to lock things in place like an 1176.

So testing it some more on drums and things, I'm torn. It sounds slower than any other 1176 I've used. It won't do the Obliterate-The-Leading-Transient of drums thing that you expect an 1176 to be able to do. More than what I consider a normal amount of initial transient gets through no matter what. I'm not sure yet if that's a deal breaker for me or not. The tone really is lovely. Very classy sounding.
I'll email you, Joshua.

I love the tone but I need it to be able to lock things in place like an 1176. Yeah, the tone is definitely vintage sounding...but that's exactly what I'm experiencing...the initial attack is not as immediate as I would expect. Funny you mention it, because this morning, I unhexed the attack knob to make sure it was lined up properly...e.g., it was all the way clockwise when the shaft was fully clockwise. It was. If I go completely to the fastest setting, I can knock out those transients. But I don't think I've ever gone past say 5 on other 1176's - haven't needed to - it was fast enough. Same on snares.

It won't do the Obliterate-The-Leading-Transient of drums thing that you expect an 1176 to be able to do. A lot of spike gets through no matter what. I'm not sure yet if that's a deal breaker for me or not. The tone really is lovely. Very classy sounding. I'll email you, Joshua. Damnit, this is what I've been saying lol. Glad to know I'm not crazy. I don't want to get into the "it's as fast as all the ones we have here" argument per se...but anyway, is there any way to change the attack times? I have no idea whether that's impossible or not.

ragan, can you post an example at some point showing the fastest setting on the ADG and the fastest setting on the Warm? Or like a drumbus crush thing?

I emailed Josh though and I'd like to give him a chance to respond privately. There may be some calibration things I can check or something. I'll wait to hear from him before drawing any definite conclusions about it. I also need to test it on some more things.

Hmmm. I have two on order, but this concerns me. I obviously want there to be the proper 1176 behavior, just as everyone else wants there to be too.

I don't wanna sound alarm bells. I probably shoulda held off on posting to wait and test it on some more things. I guess when you wait a year for a compressor you wanna dive right in.
Running some more drum tests, it's not like insanely far off from the other 1176s I have here. But it does keep more of the initial attack in the signal, even when you're trying to crush it. On some drum tracks, it behaves pretty similarly and on others, not. On vocals, I definitely notice it. I should say too, though, that it's been literally a few years since I had a Urei here so I'm by no means the authority on vintage 1176s. I've used several clones a lot and a couple Ureis a handful of times. So take my comments for what they're worth and not more than that.
The thing sounds good. Really good. It just behaves a little differently than I was expecting. It remains to be seen if it's my expectations or the ADG that are out of spec.

I wondered whether the knob pot or whatever Isn’t funny or something. I can make the UAD plug crush more than the ADG. Which why have an A Rev. if you can’t crush something with it?

I really like the sound of the adg and certainly see lots of signal reduction in the vu, but haven’t tried to really crush it.
This could all come down to which unit(s) was/were the golden unit used as the build model ?

Yeah it's not at all that there's not gain reduction, it's that too much (to my ear) unattenuated signal gets through before the gain reduction kicks in. It's possible the vintage Ureis are slower like this too and the clones are too fast. I doubt it but can't say for sure. If I can get the time I may rent a Urei or two and refresh my memory while I evaluate this ADG.
Agreed about the tone. I love it. It's got a lot of harmonic content but it's really elegant sounding. Recognizable from the vintage units and the records they're slathered all over. I LOVE the Rev G on acoustic guitars. And I suspect I'll love it on piano too. If we can get the attack situation sorted out, it's a helluva box.

Could you check this out with Plugindoctor to get some quantified numbers on this compared to some other 1176? It's a fun software to play with anyways. That for the ratios and attack times. The free Room eq wizard is a lot better for checking out frequency response and distortion.
Btw fwiw I think I read Stams previous 1176 had the attack and release knobs fast/slow wired backwards.
Before the Plugindoctor, i measured compressors by making a test signal with few seconds of quiet sine, then a sudden increase in level, and return to the quiet level. Record that through the compressor and geek out with the resulting waveform. Plugindoctor is faster and easy, but maybe not so accurate to quantify what's happening.

Correct me if I’m wrong but an 1176 has the fastest attack of any hardware compressor ever made: 20 MICROseconds. No way it lets through an uncompressed part of the signal.
