I did the Don Classics U76 Blue stripe. You're right of course. But with only one source (fem voice) and only one setting and w/o hearing the source in it's context this can only give a very sketchy impression. Fun and interesting imo. The next step for me is to demo for a few weeks and put it to work in my studio with my music etc. And re using test tone, we did get the instruction to have 15dB of GR at loudest peak which was clearly one note towards the end ('God'), so to me that note was the test signal. I looped that note and dialed. A side note. I believe the shoot out started with the wish to compare Blue stripe versions. Now it has become more of a general 1176 shoot out. Totally fine of course, but just saying. Edit: And Thank You Sal for doing this! Cool for me was to hear that the U76 at least seems to be in the same ballpark as the original. Thumbs up for David o'Neill (Don Classics) and Ed Anderson. For the music I'm working with mostly I couldn't justify a wall of 1176s. I've got two MC77s, waiting for Hairball parts for my 2nd U76 and hopefully today will order a Hairball Rev D, so that will have to do for now. Of course that could change if suddenly the swedish rock community dubs me CLA of Sweden, but for some reason I find that unlikely . The U76 is very impressive for what it is. David did an excellent job on this one. I wouldn't mind sending the same file through mine with the same settings to see if it has any differences, I chose some different types of caps and resistors when I built mine. I'd be interested to see if it did anything different compared to yours. Hi, welcome to the forum. You can download the original file from post#2 and process it thru your unit. D/A, A/D will also present subtle differences.

jeromemason The raw file is in the 2nd post, so go ahead! Attack 1, Release 7, I put input/otput on the 'classic' 10 o clock/2 o clock (33/15), and trimmed the output from my DAW (actually I had it inserted on a channel in PT) to give 15dB GR on the loudest note close to the end ('God').

Man, the plugins are getting pretty good these days. I still hear more "weight" in the size and tone with the hardware and the way it grabs and lets go... but it's getting close.

I think, that as time goes by, hardware modeling will converge on the real thing. Perhaps never completely accurate, but close enough that it won't matter.

Its sum of all the small things, it'll matter IMO

Time to sell that STA then ;-) Not yet on that one for me :-) Maybe never! Feel you on this. Im mixing more hybrid these days(from mainly ITB) and i cant be happier. My mixes def carries more weight and def has more vibe with the outboard. Anyway this is prob OT. Back to the shootout. BTW thanks for doing this Sal

I could really see going the Hybrid route with Apollo and Symphony...The UA plugs are really good.

Ok my top 4 are the Urei rev D, rev F, Wa76 and the MC. The rev D was so smooth and beautifully controlled. Littlesicily I'm finding the rev F to pump more than the wa76 on"bear patiently". But that line is a great test for the compressors. The Blue Stripe sounds great as well.

I went back to listen again and the Urei rev F is just a stand out to me. It seems make anything I put thru it jump out to the front. Of the plugins, I think the UAD sounds really good.

I could really see going the Hybrid route with Apollo and Symphony...The UA plugs are really good. That's my suggestion. I don't think you'll regret it. It's a great workflow.

I don't really need it...it would just be cool. If I were tracking drums, I would really want it.

Just for kicks, Sal you could run that file through the Sta Level and show the boys the comparison(the benchmark to which all other vocal compressors bow down). Wait, I guess I could too for that matter. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

If you ADAT the Symphony through the Apollo like I've got mine set, you can track with UAD plugins on the front end of the Symphony conversion with sub 2 millisecond latency. It's like having an HD Symphony rig on a native system. Big plus.

Wait, I guess I could too for that matter. Thanks for taking the time to do this. This is a cool thought. Maybe even take it a step further. Have a sticky thread at the top with only compression files of this track and keep this thread as a convo thread. People could submit different compression files to be added to the sticky. I have a handful of hardware comps that I could run it through.

It's an old thread.
