I had a Daking Fet II and thought that was a really nice 1176 style compressor as it was not so gritty as the 1176. I loved its smooth sound. But I have never owned a Daking mic pre and was wondering what they might be like? What sonic features would it bring to the stable? Is there any particular sources that really shine on the Daking or is it just a general all round workhorse that does well on most things? I was thinking off getting a Daking Mic pre/Eq as is sports both input and output transfromers as apposed to just the Mic Pre one single input transformer only. THanks for your thoughts.

Such a nice pre as it stacks really well, and it has a sweet high end so I guess one could call it a brightish preamp, but it is in no way harsh at all. They have some color, in the family of Trident preamps, and is really nice and quiet until you max it out. The hipass filter is a soft 12db I use to rid the rumble or subtract from captures that I know need not extended lows. There is plenty of gain, I think 25 to 70db, and enough clean for a ribbon. It's a fantastic preamp and I enjoy using it on everything because it sounds splendid on every source I use it with. Super bright mics might need other treatment, but even so, Daking is da kine!

I like my pair of Mic Pre EQ's, I tend to use them on electric guitars and snare drums. I've also used them on vocals, they can be a nice match with something like a SM7 or a flat mic like a 414 or U89 so you can air a little air. A good value for the money.

Great pres. They work well on pretty much any source.

What ya need to know? I own 16 of the vertical 52270's and 8 of his 91579 limiters from the same era.
They both are amazing... Big thick, and just sound great.

I have a Daking mic pre one that I really like. It's the A-Range circuit with a Jensen input transformer and a THAT balanced line driver rather than an output transformer.
Its continuous frequency high-pass filter sounds really good and it has an instrument input too. They are just bringing out a two-channel version although I really like the idea of two separate power supplies.

I had 3 Mic Pre 500's that were outstanding. I used them a lot on snares and drums. I just sold 2 of them and have the last one up for sale but only because I have fallen in love with CAPI pres and the therapy of soldering and making my own really speaks to me now. I say you can't go wrong.

I used to have a mic pre iv. It was killer on anything percussive. The Jensen transformers add a really nice sparkle to things.

I've got a Mic Pre IV as well and the FET III. I use them on pretty much anything.

I had a pair for a while and loved the sound of my voice through it. Very focused sounding compared to the pillowy Avalon I was using before I got the Dakings.

Sincerely glad Dakings did well on this source, yet being less than pillowy than a 737 is easy -which means Avalon adds a mid-range mist that would leave everyone find clearer the next pre. A studio director I know came attratcted to a Daking studio in NYC, and was unimpressed by the EQ`ing.

I thought, the EQ was one of it's highlights?

I thought, the EQ was one of it's highlights? I’ll be kind the 737 EQ is take it or leave it, most times I left it, plus let’s face it if your judging it against the Daking we are talking about a modern implementation of one of the most mythical EQ’s of all time! Think your old Butch Vig Neotek story my friend 😎

So ericn you like or did mot likfe the daking eq?i was thinking of getting there channel strip. I thought the malcom toft atc-2 was a handy eq being ic based, so i was thnking the Daking Eq would be taking Malcolms twist up another notch.

I thought the malcom toft atc-2 was a handy eq being ic based, so i was thnking the Daking Eq would be taking Malcolms twist up another notch. I have always wanted a rack full of them, Very verisital but not surgical! Don’t think Toft, all Malcom did was edit designs in the A range times it was Barry Porter who gave us most of the A Range design. Malcom’s EQ’s and all the number series Tridents are for the most part not all that different from all the other British mid priced boards of the same price and time. This is not just my opinion, this is from conversations with those who worked on an A Range! Now, The Daking isn’t an A range clone, Geoff and Company took the A range design and refined it, plus at this point I triple double dare you to find me 8ch of original A range that sound the same! The Daking is to the A Range what Great River is to Neve! But I would still but the Daking with Classic or CAPI 550’s or Neve 1081’s and 1073’s as the most useful tracking EQ’s ! The Daking sound isn’t the same as John Hardy but they both are subtle enough color that I can see using them on just about anything!

My understanding is that Malcom sent Geoff a complete set of schematics back when Trident was no more and the circuits are the same except for substitutions of unavailable parts.

I have heard both stories but also that there was a lot of unavoidable limited or unreasonable parts, also was always told to emphasize the based on vs clone when the subject of Daking and A range came up. Also nobody at SMART WITH THE Cherokee A Range downstairs and a fair amount of Daking upstairs ever really noticed a sonic connection, the 500 version and the one in the modern console are even further away with the THAT / Jensen transformer like chip vs Iron on the output!

We had a Mic Pre One and it's fantastic. Very underrated. We've had a producer bring in the older racked channel strips a few times too and they're also really nice sounding.

Eric, you are friggin' brilliant, "The Daking is to the A Range what Great River is to Neve". Pure poetry.
