Damnit. They waited until I sold my damn hardware. Although, to be honest, nothing short of hardware will quench the thirst.

I have a Satellite and use the plugs in every mix...I never chose any of the emus over a real mic pre, but I’d certainly love to try this. But until they have an affordable front end with a digital out, I’m out.

I keep hoping there’s a Helios revival coming. Had a guy at VK tell me to wait till at least March. Don’t know what that means.

March huh? Maybe that's why they dropped off the map. Been in development stage to take the world by storm? This is not a dig BTW, I'm genuinely curious as to why JK masterbates to these pre amps. I'll buy in if I can do the same.

Don't pity him. He had one. Sold. I sold him mine, he sold it. Last year was the first year in 16 years I went without a publishing deal. I had to make some moves that I didn’t want to. Luckily, I’ve found a second wind in this industry and now own all my own publishing. So, some pieces are coming back.

And btw - I’ve bought and sold about six of them. Shit changes.

And I’ll add this - while this pre/EQ is really cool/finickyand beautiful in the low mids and top...they won’t make a song better...I believe now more than ever that the pre is a smaller component to the sound than we all give credit - but hey that’s just me. I do like these for their discrete sound and nice passive EQ.

Just demoing the EQ...Sounds like a Helios...even pushing into distortion, it's got the clippy thing going on. The 10khz shelf on these things is pretty special...I'll probably buy because I got some good coupons with it and I already have the mkI...

I'm excited they released this one. I've never used a real Helios, but have liked the UAD version on electric guitars. If they manage the same leap forward as, say, the 1073, this should be a really nice addition.
John, does the new version let you drive it to good distortion without too much bad? I feel like that is where the 1073 MKII really shines. I had some tracks recently where I elected to use the UAD chain of 1073 > Oxide over the Bullet >Zulu. That is certainly the exception, but it can happen.

Yeah it definitely does. I've never had an original, so I can only speak to the reissues, but this distortion sounds very similar...if not a little more pleasing. It's a clipping sounding distortion - kind of weird. But I put it on a distorted guitar bus with some 3.5 and 10khz shelf and it really made it better sounding. I usually will use Decapitator to my dirty guitar busses, but I could see this being a viable option.

You’re right about the 10k on this is - it’s as good as I’ve heard in the digital realm. Very impressive.

And are you using an Apollo, or are you using a UA satellite? I'm just curious because when i had my Apollo and was testing out this new unison technology it really wasn't that big of a deal, but evidently they are getting closer to mimicking the real thing? Just curious really because I have a small room that i was thinking about setting up for a small Apollo studio in one room for smaller budgets and if they are really getting closer to where it's actually worth it, I might just use that setup for writing. I have almost all UAD plugs, but just haven't been using the plug's from the newer Mark II versions that implement the newer unison technology because I was waiting to see what UA does...still waiting/wondering if they will ever go Native or increase horsepower(Version 3).

I gotta be honest...I couldn't tell any difference using the amps and stuff in Unison...I guess you had to to use the pres in Unison though. The last I heard, there was still a difference in "weight"...and just like every other digital emulation, they often just sound like the same thing with different EQ curves on them. That being said, if we blind tested real API, Neve and Helios pres (without distortion) I bet they would sound generally like the same thing with different EQ signatures. Where they really show their stripes is when you push them into distortion and harmonics. But I will say this - anyone can make an amazing recording with the UA stuff. I found the Symphony MKII ADDA to be smoother and more revealing...but we're talking small steps here. And if you're mixing for a living, small steps make a tangible time difference. On the "making demos" side of things, I kinda miss Console and the Apollo.

While I would have loved using a Symphony, my next album's being released Feb 21st, and it was all done with the Apollo, with the exception of a couple of drum tracks.
I think this sounds OK..
