I have an SM7b and i love it for it's utilitarian factor much in the way good 87's are liked in studios but if you are longing for an SM7, try to use a Senny 441 on anything you care to throw at it ( especially the "Holy Grail" - Kik, H/H , Vox, Acoustic) and watch your "Jonesing" be messed with. Haven't used one in 25 years but if the new ones are the same then I'd wager, for most, price would be likely all that got in the way.
Cheers, Ross

I prefer the 441 on instruments... but I prefer the SM7 on vocals. In my experience.
Maybe the best two of each thing. In dynamic world.

I like them sonically better than an SM7b mostly. But I really like singing into an SM7b for some reason. But yeah, 441s are amazing. I could do a record with just a few of them and nothing else.

Sylvia Massy uses a 441 as an under snare mic. I have wanted to try one for a while.

Of all of the crazy microphones I’ve tried, the SM7 isn’t one of them.

The real fun is running one into the other if you have a pair! I’ll usually do that with just silk, and no tape effect. Vocals sound pretty amazing cranking the red into the blue. If you have a bass that’s not cutting enough try double red. The midrange just clears right up. Chain was sm7 . . . Neve 542 tape sim, and a little . . . I have a pair of 542s, and they will add color like crazy if you crank the dials at all! In fact, I find the "tape head" bump to be too much beyond barely cracking the saturation and blend knobs. Same with the silk low/high, a little goes a long way. Never tried it on a mic though, good idea.

SM7 is one of the few in a modern context you can use with a tube pre (or anything naturally higher gain and transformer coupled...API, min 34dB.....cough cough) and not have a pad in between, so you get full interaction of mic and pre instead of the effects of a pad changing both differently.

I'm also a fan of the SM7b (with a FetHead permanently attached). I got my GF a Telefunken M81 for Xmas, mostly because I could get it in a custom color she likes and I figured it'd be somewhat similar to an SM7b. What a surprise this mic is on her voice. Less midrange 'point' than the SM7b and all the same goodness everywhere else. Strangely it has breath sensitivity like a condenser but tonally I like it as much as my 49 clone for her voice, just less detail. Tempted to get one for myself.

It can be a great mic for sure. Ethan Johns used it as a vocal mic for the early Ray Lamontsgne records he did, sounds great. Aoife O’Donnovan also used it as vocal mic on her Fossils record. Sounds brilliant there too. Aoife could sing into any mic and sell it. But I get your point lol.

Shannon tuned the ole Upton today...and I hear the value...not sure it’s a $2700 upgrade...but Ole Johnny’s been down that road before.

Ad in follow up to the worst pun ever...
John, why do you have a $4000 mic? Because you have been keeping it warm for me. I'll swap you an SM7 in fantastic condition and throw in something else if you like!
To me, the SM7 is a dull, lifeless, hipster-ish, cliched, over-hyped, cool-factor, sterile, hit-or-miss, emperor's new clothes kind of microphone. And there's a down side too

Next point...
Someone pointed out that the SM7 is a very low output microphone. In fact, it has an almost perfectly shaped spherical (tennis ball sized) pickup zone directly in front of the screen. It is what makes it so perfect for isolated guide vocals in a hot room, and makes it the perfect isolated snare mic.
And again, you look cool to all the hipsters with their boots from the 1920s, Al Capone haircuts and lumbersexual beards.

They do seem to be everywhere these days. And, at least on vocals, yeah they don’t always work. But what does? Still the best mic I’ve tried on my crappy voice, but also some folks who can sing. Also a fave on guitar cabs. But pulling a 57 a couple or three inches back? Often it can get pretty close. Cheers, Geoff
