I've used SM7s before...in the studio for scratch vocals and other quick stuff...but never had one in the studio. Just borrowed one while my mic gets fixed...and wow. Why haven't I been using one of these damn things all these years?

Because of the GS Hype! Seriously it can be a great mic, but like any mic it isn't a match for everyone and people fall into either the love or hate camp on this one probably more than others. The other thing is while it's inexpensive as far as a vocal mic, it isn't as versatile as most LDC's, also the switches are intimidating to some. Many fall into a trap of thinking all dynamics are like SM57's and are afraid to dip their feet in the large dynamic well. Of course if you want the best of the SM lineage find a SM5!

I absolutely love singing into them but I could never quiiiiite get the sonics there. A little nasally and hard sounding on me. But many have gotten great tracks out of them of course. Post something!

I feel ya John.
I bought an original SM7 (not the later versions, and I'm not sure "how" different they are) with a group of mics from a buddy of mine with an awesome mic collection. I know Dan D also got one from the same guy at the same time. We both commented to each other how great they sounded. They don't have the detail of a great tube condenser, but often, you just don't need or want the detail, and they are just the ticket. Good on a lot of other stuff too, like guitar amps, etc..

It can be a great mic for sure. Ethan Johns used it as a vocal mic for the early Ray Lamontsgne records he did, sounds great.
Aoife O’Donnovan also used it as vocal mic on her Fossils record. Sounds brilliant there too.

I have been told by people at Shure, only difference is how they are assembled, and by others their very different Capsule, infact that source tells me the Non B is much similar to the Unidyne IV found in the likes of my SD548's. So who knows?

I thought it was just the RF shielding that was the difference.

I stumbled upon these some years ago when I worked in radio. All our studios were equipped with them. I was expecting RE20's or something more familiar. But whenever I recorded any on air performances it always surprised me how good they sounded. It was another few years before I realized there was a bunch of hype on these mics.
I should really buy one. There's much of an excuse I can think of not to.

Low output, so you'll need a quiet high gain pre, and your choice of mic preamp will make a big difference in the sound.

To get the most out of the sm7 you just gotta take the foam off.
It opens up the sound just enough to make a difference.

I love mine through my GR MP2NV. It doesn't get used as much as the Flea, but it is a really good match for most male vocals.

I got mine in the mid90s. I got it because Re20s were all the rage and I wanted something different. How’d that go?
Still the mic I like best on my voice, although I haven’t tried any of the big time famous ones. I like it on guitar cabs, and given that I had limited mic’s back then it probably got used on bass cabs, toms, kick etc. Everybody survived.
Cheers, Geoff

They work more frequently than most mics thrown up in front of a new singer you haven't worked with before, with or without bleed. When they don't work, they tend to sound horrendously broken, so you know to change it. They do change character a lot with the preamp mating.

There is a video on YouTube of Neil & Tim Finn live from Roundhead using SM7's after a couple of tunes Tim moves to the piano and the U48 and you really don't deal like your gaining much going from a $400 sm7 to a $14k U48 !

I borrowed this one from Sal...he mentioned it was about 3-4 years old. I've used them in the past and thought the same thing Wiz and Ragan did - thought it was a little pointy...This one doesn't sound that way to me, though.
