SM7 on my voice for this tune. The vocals get pretty layered at the end. Chain was sm7, Heritage 1073, Neve 542 tape sim, and a little hi shelf from uad 1073 itb during mixing.

Cool tune, Nick. Sort of modern pop meets Fleetwood Mac "Tusk" era vibes.

This is exactly what these mics are good for. A singer with a "bite" in his mid range. It doesn't "magnify" it like a condenser does, so you get a nice musical tone. This is absolutely a great mic for your voice, and they sit great in a mix. Lucky you.

I was probably about 3-4 inches away. Sounds great on you.... and nice singing (as always). I can see why (coupled with their rejection) they are a good choice with the band in the room. Cheers Wiz

Cool tune, Nick. Sort of modern pop meets Fleetwood Mac "Tusk" era vibes. Appreciate that Ragan. I really need to use that mic more. I was able to keep it right on my desk while I tracked. The workflow was super fun. Sometimes that’s more important than having a world class mic.

Regret selling mine, was great for my voice-overs on the radio show I was doing. Has anyone compared the cheapy AA DM20 in "SM7" mode?

Because if you sell it you know within 2 weeks you John Kennedy will find yourself paired with some young song writing partner who will sound like what comes out of that rear end of the pooch through an SM7 and you know will sound like the heavens through that tuned Upton & will find yourself once again explaining to your wife why you need to once again purchase said mic ! That and it looks good😎

SM7B... my favorite DYNAMIC vocal mic out of the dozens I have tried, including all the usual suspects. I'm surprised I don't have one right now. I just think it's the best one.
Hard to follow these posts, LOL.

I even keep one (a 7b) in here. Occasional VO stuff, occasional band needs to add a screech or something. Never even take it off the stand.

Had an SM7 on snare last basics session— with an MK-012 capsule aligned, riding piggyback. Interesting stuff, did not really need the Oktava once all was said and done.

I had a Pearlman TM-1 and a Soundelux U95s with a Shannon capsule and, while they were both nice mics, I seemed to be kinda all 2k on them. Been awhile though. I might try the Stam or Warm offering sometime.

Chain was sm7 . . . Neve 542 tape sim, and a little . . . I have a pair of 542s, and they will add color like crazy if you crank the dials at all! In fact, I find the "tape head" bump to be too much beyond barely cracking the saturation and blend knobs. Same with the silk low/high, a little goes a long way. Never tried it on a mic though, good idea.
