Apart from the model train stuff and clothing there's quite a bit of music and recording gear... "... Studio gear, recording equipment and instruments featured include two Studer A800 Mark III Master recorders known as 'The Twins' and used together in Young's studio (estimate: $10,000-$12,000); four Marshall Full Stack Amplifiers (estimates ranging from $2,000-$3,500); a 1935 Martin F-7 acoustic guitar (estimate: $4,000-$4,500); a 1965 Gibson ES-345 left handed electric guitar, with a Varitone, original tailpiece, original pickguard, a strap and a handwritten chord chart (estimate: $3,500-$5,000); a 1999 Gretsch White Falcon SS (estimate: $2,000-$2,500) sixteen Universal Audio 610 preamp console modules (estimate: $9,000-$12,000) and a hurdy gurdy used on Young's song "Red Sun" from his album Silver and Gold (estimate: $200-$400)..."www.julienslive.com/m/view-auctions/info/id/243/The first 10 or so pages are model train items. The audio and music gear begins half way down page 11 www.julienslive.com/m/view-auctions/catalog/id/243/?page=11

Some of those estimates are so far off reality (low side), it's funny.

Some of those estimates are so far off reality (low side), it's funny. Well that's to be expected from an auction house. As soon as an item associated with someone famous is up for auction then typical market prices no longer apply.

Some of those things, not attached to Neil Young, would have sold for far more than those estimates 15 years ago.

Out of curiosity I'm specifically watching the EMT 140's and the ATR-104 which I both recently acquired. Our almost mint EMT 140 was $2400 USD and the ATR-104 was free but needs some work (bearings etc) Real Estate auctions have been under scrutiny here in Australia for way under estimating prices by as much as 25% or more. Like most places housing affordability for the average person is a thing of the past.

Some of those estimates are so far off reality (low side), it's funny. Yeah I'm betting the auction house specializes in trains, most auction houses are either really high or low on audio gear. Seeing roadcases at $450 this early makes me sad I got rid of all the old Cheap Trick and others I picked up for less than $50 and got rid of over the years! Lots of Hardy Pres and Sony Mics, nice to know we have similar taste! If I thought the Pass amps were going for close to the current bids I would grab them!

A lot of the rack electronics are at market or even overpriced.
Several EMT's have sold well over $6K lately.

I've used that 3124 in lot 293! I feel like I can maybe even see my handwriting under that layer of blank console tape on chn. 1.
It has Avedis opamps in 2 channels.

I wonder why all of this is being auctioned off?

He must have had a great [big! if it's Lionel guage] model train layout at some point. I too wonder why he's selling his stuff. I guess he doesn't need or want to use these items anymore. Ringo just did it, didn't he?
The McIntosh tube amps are already coveted. The Budweiser guitar, not so much. [A-B Brewery must have given them to just about everyone.]
Neil Young and I have the same birthday and are close in age. Geez, I'm still buying gear. What's wrong with me?

I wonder why all of this is being auctioned off? Either he's been told he's got something 'terminal' and his days are numbered or he's moving into a one room cabin in the wilderness and needs to downsize.

Anyone thinking of bidding should read the fine print. There's a 25% surcharge OVER the final bid price. Plus tax if you pick it up, or shipping if you have it shipped.
There's a couple things I might be interested in......

But Neil Young and tape are kind of married at the hip, no? If he is selling those Studers, it's hard for me to imagine anything beyond two obvious scenarios. Either he has fully embraced digital or he is no longer intending to record. I mean, he has had his own recording setup forever. Why get rid of the Studers unless he's going digital or (I hope not) hanging it up? It seems odd.

Why get rid of the Studers unless he's going digital or (I hope not) hanging it up? It seems odd. He's selling three Studer 2" multi-tracks and a couple of 2 track mix down recorders, two Ampex ATR's, two EMT 140's and a vintage Tele U47 and a couple of 1973 Neumann U87's along with several AKG C12A's and of course a bunch of older Sonys. I hope he's not about to do a 'Bowie'. But then again this may just be a fraction of what he owns. There's a guy over here who spent several years collecting vintage recording gear from around the world for his son's studio that never eventuated. The amount of gear he has been selling off over the past few years has been insane.

When Dylan was younger he was into Lionel Trains, Neil is one of the biggest Lionel fans out there, in fact he developed their audio system & many say saved Lionel. I heard it was one of those " I just have to much shit "moments. Gee Don,Hendrix Died on my second birthday & Dylan was born on the Anniversary of Miles Davis's death.

He bought Lionel when they went bankrupt! Putting this together with his archive give-away, I suspect he is probably retiring. A friend of mine worked on his gear for years and used to gripe about not having Studer A-800 spares machines. Of course, the other problem is that I'm not sure anybody still makes reliable tape which will destroy the value of those machines as people realize this.

There's a couple things I might be interested in...... Wow! 25%?!? That's steep... Yeah, but it's ONLY 20% on items over $200,000. LOL I wonder how many people will just join without reading the fine print, and then find out they are not only paying more for the "name" provenance, but an additional 25% for the privilege of being able to bid.

BTW - they also have a "hidden reserve" that allows them to cancel any auction if they don't feel the price has come up enough. Like...you know...if they only get $400 on a Hawaiian shirt instead of $800.

It's actually more. It's 25% on the first $200,000, then an additional 20% on anything above. That's just absurd.
