So, you are obviously completing digging the REDD !! It was a blast all the way around. Before he started that FB live feed, we were really diving into the RS124s, across multiple sources, dude was diggin' it. After the feed cut out, we hooked up the TG Microphone Cassettes and started throwing stuff at them; amazing how the TG Opto can go from smash to delicate with the sharp and rounded knees. I had to hit it finally and w'ell play around with the mic next time. Warren has the REDDs, RS124s and the TG Microphone Cassettes for his Master Class starting today at Sunset Sound.

Funny, I couldn't watch it live because I was working. Cool that you were there Spock. I'd love to try the REDD 47 mic myself.
For me, the most important thing in a mic is the width and character of the pickup pattern (assuming there's no extra sibilance) I remember buying a Bock U95 mic having never heard it. The pickup pattern never stopped bugging me. Even though it was set to a cardioid setting, the width of its pickup area was way too wide. The Bock felt like it was halfway to an omni setting and I had to sell it. Stand in front of a Neumann U47, U67 or U87, and it's perfect, huge, but somehow never too big. Proximity effect is perfect too. When I had the Blackspade UM-17B, the pickup pattern was perfect too. The Soyuz 0-19's pickup is very similar, but it's a little more sensitive to off axis singing, so you have to remember not to move too much.
The description of the REDD mic concerns me, I wouldn't want it to be so focused it misses the ambience surrounding it. That's an important part of the sound of the Neumann's.
I realize this is a new mic and it'll be different, I just hope it feels right when I eventually try one. With the cost of vintage mics going ever higher, it would be good to know there's a world class mic that's 3X less expensive.
Their are a few other top drawer mics that are 5k and under, but not many. And even less of them equal a good vintage 47 or 67.

Hi John, I wouldn’t be too concerned, however there’s nothing like trying in your own environment to find out if it would be a match. By the way Omni is stunning on acoustic, like you are in the room. Where are you located?

I'm in Manhattan. I'd love to see where it fits in the pantheon of great mics. I've used a vintage U47, M49, U67, U87, C12, (no ELAM 251 yet), and had the pleasure of trying the Soyuz 0-17 and the Blackspade UM-17B. I've briefly tried the Royers and Mojave's, all the American Telefunken's and a few other popular well made brands. The new Telefunken U47 is a monster, but at 9k, I'd certainly look elsewhere, unless I had either hit the lottery or had a couple of #1 hits ;-)
So far, the U67 was the best fit for my voice. The Max Mod for the TLM 67 is damn good, it's a real deal Neumann sound. Not quite the original, but as good as almost anything made new today.
I have high hopes the REDD .47 will top them all for me.
My main concern is always lead vocals, but if there's some magic on acoustic guitars also happening, I couldn't be happier. Much of my work has an acoustic forward sound.

That was fun, great sounds. Now I gotta work out how to be able to afford one of these. Or two. Nice playing from Warren, but, please, get the man some shoes already...

I was surprised too. In another video, he was being asked by people online to play all sorts of styles, and in a fun relaxed manner, he just knocked out some some of the most badass sounds you can imagine. Definitely not a faker!

I've played some more with my single REDD.47 (the pre). Also just got the Beamer from Sonic Farm (Canada). Those channels are lovely too and less than half the price of the REDD. The SF stuff have some really cool and smart options, but when setting up plain clean settings there's something sooo pleasant, natural and effortless with the REDD.47. Despite that flame in the logo (sorry, just had to..) I'm liking it more and more, and could be looking at getting a couple more if/when finances allow.
