Nice. I've wanted to try the 170 and the FET 47. For me, Mario Lanza when he was at his best has one of the most incredible voices and deliveries. His career unfortunately is marred by inconsistent performances and a failure to return to opera after Hollywood. His high C in this is ridiculous. I know he used an RCA 44 for most of his commercial recordings and an Altec 639 for most of his film recordings. My mother raised me on Mario Lanza, I think that's why I appreciate a vocalist who can actually sing!

A didn't hang with the others B was liveable C Was what I would want nice body, K47 so less dimension than a M7 except D had the best presentation of the vibrato might have been the take but the others seamed a bit ragged on vibrato. All we're done simultaneously. So it's the same take. A. Is a good representation of my voice on a U47ish mic. B. is Advanced Audio giving you a quality mic on a budget. C. Is a good representation of how I want my voice to sound. Now the question becomes which capsule do I go for if I go this route? I liked the K47, so I'd hate to pick up the M7 style cap and not like it. 4K is a lot for me. The body on this mic was great. Especially in the Christmas song take I did. We were listening to it and Jim and I were both like, this sounds like a record. D. I like the U67 on the operatic stuff, but it is a bit dark. I really need to brighten it up with EQ. It's more neutral nature does a good job of not exaggerating my vibrato. I hear my favorite Sergio Franchi records when I listen to it. Lol. The U87ai is like that too, but lacks weight.

Great picture of Jussi in front of a 49 in a recording session! just a FYI, but neither of those mics is a 49. Most likely 87's, but in this pic it's hard to tell.

I think you need to demo a Flea with the M7 , but I also think you should get Spock to send you a REDD47 your voice would show what it really can do.

Yes, I've said it before Vincent, at that price you need to be sure that the Chandler is not the mic - would be interesting if you could get it to demo

Once you're at a budget level that's over $3,000, it doesn't pay to not look at the more expensive mics. 3 G's is way too much to spend if it isn't THE ONE. It would be better to sell two mics and add some money to buy the Chandler if it's right than settling for something lesser. How much was the Flea you were looking at?
I've often wondered why a company dedicated to very high quality reproductions like Flea chose that name. I mean fleas are disgusting things. Why anyone would, (with the exception of one well know bass player) name their beautiful product Flea escapes me. I mean why not cockroach? I of course would buy the mic I liked even it was called POS, but it would still bug me looking at a Flea logo or a POS logo every time I fired it up.
Or is it just me?

Thanks Jake, that's good to know. It almost makes sense, except it still translates to a FLEA They should have used FLEX, or Flex Audio.

Unless their microphones flexed, FLEX would be a terrible name: www.earthworksaudio.com/microphones/flexmic-series-2/It's just an acronym. No meaning, and no translation.

Jake said, "It's just an acronym. No meaning, and no translation." Sorry, flea means flea. It's no different than saying RAT is just an acronym that stands for Rational Audio Technologists. How can anyone argue this?
If by your metric Flex would be a terrible name, (I actually think it would be a lousy name), then Flea is absolutely horrible. My point was, I think it wasn't a wise choice. I only mentioned Flex because the company's name is Flexible, for goodness sake.

I understand where you are coming from Martin; in this competitive world naming is an important part of positioning your product in minds that need to be impressed. Having said that, it appears that Flea have produced a product that has garnered real respect and may well be keeping the creators as busy as they need and or want to be in spite of the name.
A local audio/visual production company without any awareness of the play on words called their business "Big fat productions". sometimes word associations escape people much like how Martin wrote, "it would still bug me looking at a Flea logo......"
FWIW, within a week or so I should have a tune finished done almost entirely with a Stam 87; will post.
Resume normal service.
Cheers, Ross

So, the good news is if I decide to go the FLEA 49 route and I order the one with the F7 capsule, if find I prefer the F47 capsule I have 30 days to return it and can exchange it for one with the F47. At least that's what my VK rep said. So that's cool.

Flea is on sale at ZenPro. I saw that. $200 more than Vintage King had them on sale for two weeks ago. I think the FLEA 49 was $3856.00 at VK during the sale.

Well, it looks like I'm going to get to try out the REDD Microphone. I pick it up from a dealer on Thursday and will post some samples and let everyone know my thoughts. A big thank you to spock for helping set this up.
