Once you're at a budget level that's over $3,000, it doesn't pay to not look at the more expensive mics. 3 G's is way too much to spend if it isn't THE ONE. It would be better to sell two mics and add some money to buy the Chandler if it's right than settling for something lesser. How much was the Flea you were looking at? I've often wondered why a company dedicated to very high quality reproductions like Flea chose that name. I mean fleas are disgusting things. Why anyone would, (with the exception of one well know bass player) name their beautiful product Flea escapes me. I mean why not cockroach? I of course would buy the mic I liked even it was called POS, but it would still bug me looking at a Flea logo or a POS logo every time I fired it up. Or is it just me? Lol. Why does Warm Audio use a steaming turd logo?

Exciting turd? But to be fair, it looks like they changed their logo now. No more steam. Does that mean they ran out of steam? (Oh stop being sarcastic ...)

Warm had a contest to change the logo, so they're responding to their clientele, which is smart. I never thought of a steaming turd when I saw that logo, but I see how that connection might be made.

Ok guys. If you want to hear how the REDD compared to the FLEA49 check the link below. I added files to the folder I posted earlier with the FLEA49 tracks. I only did a quick take, so the vocals aren't perfect. I'll do something nice when I get my video together. I did one take in regular mode and one with Low Contour engaged. On the operatic take I kept the mic preamp on normal. On the Crooning take it was on drive. It's not a perfect test, but it should give you some idea how the mic compares to the other mics. www.dropbox.com/sh/gksy8w842usm2rj/AACYmvA3Gg6P4dafdbANXg-pa?dl=0

c0rtland I think HiFi is a great way of describing the Chandler REDD mic. It has a very modern sound, but its not bright. If you wanted a microphone that has the best parts of the U47 and an ELA M251 and put them together in one mic, the REDD is that microphone. I actually really like the Low Contour Mode for the same reasons I like my AA CM251. I'm really looking forward to trying my wife on the Chandler REDD. I may have even convinced her to find some time to record something for the YouTube video I'm planning with it. I have not tried any of the Gefell microphones, although I've heard good things. rob61 I'm trying very hard not to sell everything to buy the FLEA 49, although this was similar to the advice my friend jtc111 gave me. I'm about to release my crowd funding campaign for my next album, so I have a little time. I'm going to need as many microphones as I can to record small sting, woodwind, & horn sections. Funny thing is, the U87ai and MKU67 kit would probable have a quicker turn around and yield closer to what I need for the FLEA 49 than any other microphone I have in the studio. I'm trying not to do that though as both the U87ai and MKU67 kit would be really useful for my project. Martin John Butler Not sure why the REDD files were a little quieter. I level matched them pretty closely in my DAW. I did this really fast and just to share with a few friends and you guys here. For me the FLEA 49 gives me a presence in combination with warmth that I haven't heard in any other microphone I've tried for my voice. The AA CM49 definitely is in that realm, but as c0rtland pointed out it's a bit more HiFi, almost a mid point between the FLEA 49 and the REDD. This is definitely the direction I'm going in. I'd like to see if I can get in front of one with an M7 style capsule in it before I commit to buying the K47 style capsule like the one I tried.

Our latest Live in the Studio video; "I' Te Vurria Vasa." This was the first Neapolitan song I ever learned. It was taught to me by my grandfather Poppy Carmine, whose mom, my great grandmother, sang it to him and his siblings as a lullaby. My friend Andrew Ardito made me a really beautiful orchestration. Using the Advanced Audio CM49 on this one.

Dave from Advanced Audio Mics just announced a revision on the CM49 that will include a BV11 transformer and a closer circuit to the M49C, so I'm very curious about that. Currently he uses a BV18 transformer which is more hifi. He and I discussed some differences between his current CM49 featured in the video above and a repair on a DIY M49 he just made. He mentioned how the DIY M49 had a similar sound, but the BV11 offered a little more low mid grit. It was funny, because that is what I had said about the FLEA 49 vs his CM49. I've been selling some gear and microphones to put some money aside to make a big M49 style purchase, but I've tried not to sell all my AA mics to do it. I'm definitely looking at the CM49le with a lot of interest. Maybe he'll let me trade up. reddirt mentioned Beesneez microphones new 49 style microphone, which they have hinted at but isn't officially out yet. I think a few others have mentioned it in this post as well. I really don't know enough about them to comment about them. There mics seem very much in the price range that I'm looking at, but how is the quality of their sound and build? I just haven't heard them enough vs any other brands to have a comment one way or the other. So this isn't a knock against them, just a legitimate question. My comment to you Ross is that I'd love to reach out to Ben from Beesneez and to try his new 49. So I'll shoot out an email and see what happens.

Hi Vincent, the quality of Beesneez producer series build IME is very high; as to the sound - I have an Arabella (producer series) which works great on one artist I work a lot with but not on some others so the same old 'horses for courses' rules apply. There's a few photos here of his new M49 www.gearslutz.com/board/high-end/1167421-beesneez-mics-australia-m49-m50-tribute-mics-i-got-sneak-preview-now-u2.htmlThere was a post somewhere by Klaus Heyne a while back, basically saying the Beesneez capsule (don't remember which one) was very close but not quite, to Neumann quality FWIW. ( search the purple site perhaps) Caveat: It looks very promising but I'm not recommending this BN 49 in any way as I have no experience with it, just giving some pointers to allow you to cover all options; as you well know, your own ears and experience are the final arbiter. Will try and post a little of the Arabella as a quality indicator if i get time later today. Cheers, Ross

Those auction house auctions take high commissions, also proaudio items don't do as well Guitars work better as display pieces. As a mic unless you want it as a display piece you are as likely to lose money as make money on the resale of that thing!

Hi Vincent; an excerpt from a track using a Beesneez Arabella to give you perhaps some idea of higher end Beesneez. The artist is Glen Yearwood AKA "Storyteller " available at the normal outlets. The mic is in fig 8 (the artist played and sang at the same time.) into a BAE 1073 MP into a Metric Halo ULN -2 . Guitar is a real el cheapo with a Blue woodpecker on 12th - ish fret and Studio Projects C3 in fig 8 on the body into a PreSonus FS Adated into the ULN-2 The over dubbed Fiddle if i remember correctly was a Michael Joly modded Apex 205 (purchased after hearing Dr Bill's piano recordings with it.) into the BAE. This is the artists first time in the studio with the brief being a 5 song demo (which he ultimately released as his first E.P.) Hope this adds something to the collective knowledge base, Cheers, Ross Attachment Deleted

I did tracks 4 and 5 on this record using a Beesneez Frank on vocals and probably a Thermionic Culture Rooster for the preamp. store.cdbaby.com/m/cd/greane

Thanks guys. I'll take a listen to the clips in the studio later. I'll be running around all day prepping for a concert this evening.
On on another note, has anyone used any of the microphones by RMS Audio works? I was actually looking at their RMS269, since it's the only M269 clone I've seen. I saw that they also make an RMS49 and a RMS49le which is not an exact mechanical recreation, but goes for the M49 sound and is a bit cheaper than their standard RMS49. I'd be looking at the standard RMS49, which has a very similar cost as the FLEA 49. Figured I'd see if anyone had used anything by them.

Flea and Beesneez are going to come closest to the Sound of the M7, Beesneez is a bit different I owned a Arabella for years, but for your voice I think a Flea or a Custom Shannon build is going to be as close to perfect as you will get without buying a mic the price of a Kia, Beesneez gets the dimensionality right, but can get readdy when pushed in your upper vibrato. Flea won't have quite the depth, but your voice is so big it won't matter.

Yeah. Someone in Brooklyn appears to be building them. I was tempted to reach out, but I still think I'm going with FLEA.

Right now I'm putting the money together. Then I'm going to reach out to a couple of dealers and try to demo one with an M7. The one I demoed had a K47, which sounded great on me. I just don't want to spend 4K and think "what if?"
