Vincent, it's a pleasure to hear you sing and kudos for taking on the responsibility for how your recordings sound.

The Flea 49 coming to me has the F47 capsule instead of the F7 and has the M49b circuitry. You can ask Flea for the M49c circuitry when you order. They claim that is more neutral. I should get it here on Friday. Planning some videos. Hopefully jtc111 will bring his Flea 47 over again to hear them side by side. Looking forward to hearing the Flea 49 next to my Advanced Audio CM49 too.

Vincent, it's a pleasure to hear you sing and kudos for taking on the responsibility for how your recordings sound. Thanks. In truth I've been a session vocalist for years and predominantly recorded myself in my home studio, even for big projects. I just want to find that "sound" I've always felt was what I needed to sound like. My MK U67 comes close. I'm hoping this is my last stop. We'll see.

Totally OT, but you've referenced Sergio Franchi as an influence, and my own experience with Sergio F. was to see a Ragu Spaghetti Sauce commercial a long time ago where Sergio had the first Lamborghini coupe I'd ever seen by a consumer, and as a fledgling teenager, I was mightily impressed.

Never heard anyone refer to a M49 as "thin". Sounds like it was either broken or inadvertently had the lows EQ'd out of it. It's not thin, just not as bottom heavy as some of the other usual candidates. And it is the PERFECT microphone for sitting in a dense mix too... with the M269 and C12 coming in close. The ELA M251 is probably the Holy Grail, but its a lot richer so requires more sonic real estate than an M49 / M249

I just did another recording with the Advanced Audio CM49. It really is a good sounding mic once you process it a little bit. I tend to use my UA 610 to give it a little more weight. I don't roll anything off at the bottom, but I put a low pass filter on it of 6db at 20KH. It gives it more of the vintage sound. I also give it a little low end boost with Slate's Revival Enhancer.
I'm very excited to hear it next to the Flea. I have a video shoot out all planned.... maybe two.

Sh*t... I'm in trouble. This mic sounds incredible. Preliminary tests are looking very good for the FLEA 49. I haven't put it up against the MK U67 yet.

I have to say, the FLEA 49 has some real competition with the MK U67 when I give the 67 a small EQ bump at between 3-4 KHz...... hmmm. ChaseUTB & rowmat, I'm not sure what tube is in the FLEA 49, but it has an F47 capsule (k47). The FLEA 47 has the F7 (M7) with an EF12 tube. My MK U67 has a Telefunken EF86 tube.

The Gefell UM92.1s is almost a hybrid. An M7 capsule with an EF86 tube.

All the Flea needed was some subtractive EQ....oh crap. I actually think the K47 suits my voice better than an M7 would. My understanding is the M7 would be a tad brighter.
Monday night Jim is bringing over the Flea 47. We'll shoot it out against the Flea 49 and MK U67 on some operatic vocals and crooning vocals, since those are my two specialties. Hopefully it won't take me long to put together the video on youtube. I can probably post some high quality files for you guys here too.
My hope is to also shoot out the Flea 49 & MK U67 with Advanced Audio's CM49 & CM67LE. If I don't get to it it's in favor of a live in studio video with the Flea 49. I have to see how much I can get done. lol.

Nothing empirical here to add Vincent but I have a CMV563 which I quickly shot out against a Flea 49 Next in the shop when I bought it. For me, the CMV sounded smoother and yet subsequent use in my studio shows that M7 (in the CMV) to be a little dull in the upper (8k approx and upwards) frequencies. Probably hasn't helped your cause at all but there you go.
What I do know is i've spent a s**t load on mics over the years and I'd be really, really sure before I paid big bucks again i.e. near enough isn't good enough. Having said that, I would include the REDD 47 in you deliberations (no I haven't heard it).
And while i'm at it , a big shout out to our tube man 'Bowie" on this forum. he's already provided me with a NOS Tele for the CMV which improved it but didn't get to where i hoped to go so he took it back and he's now gone extra miles to find a quiet 1958 Amperex and send it to Australia on his dime. Great stuff; a lovely bloke to deal with so you all know where to go for tubes in the future.
Cheers, Ross

I am now at the point when it is time to pack up the FLEA 49 and send it back to Vintage King. I've had it for a week. I've put it up directly against my BLUE Bottle Rocket II with the B7 cap, the MK U67, the AA CM49, and a FLEA 47 courtesy of jtc111. My first few days I suffered from bright microphone syndrome. The 49 seemed nearly as dark as my MK U67, but Jim and our friend Jack, who actually taught me studio recording, swore up and down it was right for me. So I took a step back. It just seemed a bit beefy and dark on my voice. I decided to play around with a Christmas song I know will be on my Christmas album which I've been planning. I grabbed the Blue B7, CM49, and the Flea 49 and did a quick take. Maybe it's because I was outside my typical operatic genre and was just crooning a bit, but almost right away I made a few EQ moves and my jaw dropped. I then pulled up an operatic take and used those EQ settings as my guide and there it was again. I got to try the microphone on my wife's voice in a couple of different contexts as well; operatic and crooner style. I didn't feel it worked. I preferred the MK U67. I also tried the Blue B6 (C12 cap), but it was too bright in context with me on the Flea 49. I think she's going to sound good on the B8 which is kind of in the vein of an M267 or a U87 with a tube. My wife's voice is very warm. The 49 sounded too thick. Now, compared to the CM49 there is a slightly "bigger" more 3D sound. There is a much larger bottom end. Up top there is quite a bit less on the Flea. It's as though you've put a high shelf of a few db on the CM49. I will say that in private convos with Dave he said they based their model on one of the later, slightly brighter M49s and the Flea is based on the earlier M49b. Both have K47 style capsules in them. I can EQ both to sound very similar to each other, but a good ear will hear the difference. I really liked how the Blue with the B7 cap held up. The B7 when compared to the Flea 47 or 49 lacks the saturation qualities those mics bring and a bit of the low end. It's a much cleaner sound. It actually sits sonically somewhere between the two. I'm still very happy with this purchase now that I've picked up in online pad. The U67 is darker and more neutral. All of us felt the U67 works on my voice after some strategic EQ boosts, but didn't out shine the 49. Clips will follow as soon as I have a moment. There will also be a couple of YouTube videos.

In other news, Vincent is changing his signature song to "Fever." The boy has it bad. :-)
