Yeah, that is one of the very positive things I dig about UAD. I'm on a 2012 Mac Mini, and I feel UAD extends the life of my processing power in that I don't tax my CPU much. I used to be all UAD, but I'd say I'm about 50/50 now. There's just too much good stuff out there these days. This is my exact situation.

Since I tried an Acustica plugin, it is almost the only thing I'm using. Sounds like hw. Makes algos sound 2D and flat. I never compared to UAD as I never accepted their policies. But I admit I'm running 2 computers for real-time mixing, or I have to freeze, as these are very CPU-hungry. It is totally worth it, though. As I just recycled an old computer it still did cost me less than buying the UAD cards.

I just ventured back into Nebula...and it is still as maddening as I remembered. Maybe it's like the Kemper - depends what profiles you get...but my goodness, it really turns me off. I haven't tried any of the newer acqua plugs though - as they're as expensive as the UAD stuff. Maybe I'll go download a trial of one.

You really have to give them a try. They are kind of a different thing in their sound, and in the overall approach. The communication is messy, seems so not corporate compared to all others, and the authorization system is weird. But, they are the most passionate and dedicated peaople I found in plugin-land. And of course, their plugins are the most amazing ones, sound-wise. Just download a trial of their Acquamarine, or Purple, or Titanium, or Emerald (very special one !). Grabe Lime, it is a 88RS and a Neve VR, or Sand, an SSL 4000 and 5000. Anything you wanna try, and have fun, it is worth it.

Can you give a little map on the nebula plug names and what they're emulating?

Here is a copy/paste from a guy on GS keeping an up-to-date list, that I corrected if needed :
Amethyst - Amek M2500 console equalizer + Amek 9098 compressor. Rupert Neve designed gear. 9098 has a 33609 flavor. Amber - Avalon AD2055 equalizer Aquamarine - Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor (formerly the Murano) Blue - Chandler Germanium Tone Control Coral - SPL PQ and Iron
Green - George Massenburg Labs Model 8200 equalizer Emerald - Custom built hardware, loosely inspired by the Klein & Hummel UE 1000 equalizer. The curves practically have the same unique slope as the UE-1000, but the center frequencies are different and the active part of the circuit is more modern/cleaner Ivory IAE-2 - Maselec MEA-2 equalizer Honey - 1970s era Harrison 32C equalizer + Harrison console preamp Lime - A combination of modern AMS Neve gear. A = VR B = 88RS. C/D = 8051 5.1 Surround Compressor/Limiter E = FJ V Series Channel Strip. Preamp F : 1073
Magenta - Manley Labs Massive Passive equalizer Murano - Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor (now called Aquamarine) Navy - Neve console line input/1081 EQ circuit. Neve 1081 equalizer and unknown (probably Neve 80 series) console line outputs. Ochre - Acustica Audio homebrew equalizer, inspired by the Scientific Audio Electronics (SAE) 2800 equalizer. Orange - Orban 672A
Pearl - Siemens ELA 75-15 Universal Equalizer and Auso-Siemens ELA 75-16 Compressor/Limiter. Just like the hardware, sales for this plugin are limited. The closest plugin to this that is for sale without limitation is the Emerald, as this was Siemens' response to the UE100/UE1000 mastering equalizers. Pink - API 512c preamp. modified API 550A/550B equalizers with API 2500 compressor (no Thrust [pink female gender button] variables) Pink2412 - API 2500 compressor with modifications Purple P-1 - Pultec EQP-1A Purple M-5 - Pultec MEQ-5
Red - Joemeek VC5 Meequalizer Sand - Solid State Logic 4000 (Ea, black knob)/5000 (Eb, brown knob) equalizer + SSL G-Master Buss compressors (2 flavors) Scarlet MHE-400 - Homebrew Sontec 432 inspired (close to the original, cleaner sounding) Tan - IGS Audio Multicore Compressor (one band) Titanium - Tube-Tech SMC 2B Multiband Compressor
Ultramarine - Fairchild 670 Versatile - A hybrid between Amber and Green White - White Sound Mastering WSM PEQ-2.0 (solid state equalizer inspired by the Pultec EQP-1A)

Now just keep in mind all of this comes from sampled gear, meaning you have the closest emulation possible, with harmonic distortion and everything. There are also the Prime studios plugins, a studio from Germany, having Acustica releasing products for them primestudio.at/magento2/index.php/plugins.htmlThey have sampled a real EMI console, a 2254, a Neve 1064 circuit, and their new black series, which is a mixup of different gear.

We agree they are way too much expensive and the point of a plugin is to treat as a plugin it like HW 😂 It's hard for me to recommednUAD at all to anyone because of the entry price to the platform and plugin cost... I got a $50 voucher this month, seems $25 ain't working for UAD. Yes that voucher that expired for the survey is bullshit. I was definitely not happy about that either... They have been timing vouchers to expire just before a sale and voucher seem to expire within a month.. I don't even bother looking at what I can get with a voucher anymore because they are always so restricted. I do think UAD plugins are great for monitoring if you have an Apollo. Absolutely. I may don't have time at the moment to think about it, maybe next month. Or I just want to make a wise decision what to buy, and why to buy. UAD misses the point that they are no longer one of two monopolists in the market for great sounding plug ins. Do I like their LA2A and 1176 sims absolutely its maybe the most often used plug ins. But are there native as good as those ones, yes they are. To me the whole point is this: If they want to make me use their platform they need to make attractive offers. One big minus point is, I cant carry the plugs around with me in other studios. That is why I love the I lok, I just have my external SSD and my I lok and I go to a studio and we track drums. The Slate plug ins are not bad by any means. They are different form the UAD but not bad. Klangehlem, Tone Boosters, PSP all great plug ins. I nitpick, is that the right term, native plug ins and I get a more personal stile and sound. And I save a lot of cash too. Alone the Klanghlem and the PSP Oldtimer, wonderful software compressors which can take the race with hardware. Reverbs we have so great sounding native verbs... WOW if I lock ten years back I would have given my leg for that. UAD you are not alone anymore. If you want me to buy more plug ins, you have to serve me something special.

I see it from a different perspective. I still have enough power on my Quad Card... I use the UAD plugs like some extra outboard. Charging me for mk II was nothing but stupid, pulled me away as a long time customer. Second thing that pulled me away was their last poll . I give them 30 minutes of my working time, and the voucher is limited. NG marketing strategy. The prices for thier plug ins are nothing but crazy... Last thing is. We have great sounding native plug ins... I jet do not see a reason to buy more UAD plug ins. The GUI satisfies the acquisition syndrome in us. And 'proven' pieces promise us 'professional' sounds for 'better' mixes so we follow suit and don't do the work and listen for ourselves. But that's just the cynic in me talking. I'm guilty as sin. Note to self... Just one word about this. I made the experience that those ones who don't have a fancy GUI force me to listen to the sound.

I enjoy the GUIs...the familiarity is great. I know in Cubase, you can turn the GUIs off. That would be an interesting experience. Maybe I'll try that on my next mix.

I've tried most plugins out there and as a whole, I prefer UAD plugins. They're not all amazing, but most of the UAD plugs sound at least a bit better than their rivals, and a few of the UAD plugs are unmatched in the digital world. In a profession where we spend our blood, sweat and tears searching for the extra bits of goodness, those extra inches that add up to something special, even small differences in plugin quality are worth the extra $ to me. I've mixed with and without UAD plugs and to me they do make a difference. With that said, the tools at our disposal today are so awesome, you should be able to deliver something great with most any plugins on the market. Now... hardware vs plugs... that's a different story all together. For me - good hardware adds something most plugins still can't replicate.

Yeah - that's a real valid point - there are some digital tools that do things that hardware doesn't - that's why I have a hybrid setup. Best of both worlds and ultimate flexibility. We are spoiled with great tools these days!

I love to write mix and arrange at the same time, this is a thing I still see as a novelty. You can have the sound the moment you have it in your mind, you just press record and 40 minutes later there are drums that you can use.

I don't really record through any of the plugins except the Unison preamps, which I love. I use the 1073 and 88RS all the time. I like the 610A a lot too.
I also love that the plugins sound so good and don't kill my CPU like the waves stuff. I keep Slate and Waves plugins around for when I run out of DSP, but generally start with the UAD plugins because they have a saturation quality to them that I love.
Just my two cents.

If only for the Ocean Way Studios plug-in, having UAD's platform is completely worth it. That thing in small doses does what no other plug can do. See: Eventide Tverb I had the exact same thought. I like T Verb better than any ambience/room plug I've used, which includes Altiverb and Ocean Way. Indispensable to me, TVerb.

Problem is, there's not anything else I want...except the Zener, but I'm not paying $299 for it. Me too. They always throw coupons at me and I'm always yawning them into expiration. I should start giving them away. I've probably let several hundred dollars in coupons expire over the last few years. I have so much UAD, I use about 20% of what I have, I'm not buying anything else for now.

Man, I wouldn't have expected this kind of reaction. I don't mean to imply I don't like UAD stuff, I love it, I've just already bought so much of it I don't really need anything else. I way overbought when I first got an Apollo. For me, I particularly rely on their reverbs and delays and modulation stuff.

Similar thing for me. I have more than I need already. Haven't used the Fatso in 2 years, etc. The API 2500 was a good deal though. I upgraded to the Apollo 8 and had a $100 coupon for buying new, a $25 coupon for a survey, a $50 coupon everyone received, and a special one time only $300 coupon for attending a special UAD event. So combined, I only had to put in $75 to get all the UAD plugs I can use now.
I'd like to try the Fab Filter one day, the Waves Abbey Road verb, and now that Ragan's mentioned it, T Verb, but they can wait.
The bottom line is UAD's plug-ins have been first class every time. The thing is, there's only so many more interesting "classics" to emulate. I think they better start innovating, or they'll fall behind the competition. I wish UAD well, they've been good to me and the Apollo's worked flawlessly for 5 years.

UAD has been responsive to customer input occasionally. I can understand expiring vouchers, but not vouchers for participating in a survey. If the survey has value to UAD, our time spent there should have permanent value too. We should be able to collect survey vouchers for at least a year. A fairer trade in policy would be a nice touch. At the least, they should allow three plugs a year to be sold. I'd love to sell a couple of dusty plug-ins for some newer ones. Even a 30% return value would be decent. The digital sales world is an odd thing. I've bought the permanent right to use a plug-in, but I don't own it. Anything else I spend $300 on in the world, I own, like a preamp or a toaster. We should own those rights, and be free to trade or sell anytime. That's how America has worked since forever, and we should keep it that way. I don't think people in congress truly understand the digital domain, and therefore are allowing our copyrights to be undermined and our rights as a consumer voided because we buy something that's virtual. I'll keep getting more and more hardware as often as I can afford it, and eventually, plug-ins will be a brilliant supplement. Like Jeremy, I don't love Waves either. I've got their Mercury bundle, and barely use it. Every time I compare a Waves plug to the same emulation done by UAD, UAD has been the clear winner. I think people in congress truly don't care. Thery're too addicted to having their palms liberally greased by players from the tech sector to really care about their constituents, especially since the tech people are totally nonpartisan about who they pay off.

I nitpick, is that the right term, native plug ins and I get a more personal stile and sound. "Cherrypick", I think. "Nitpicking" is complaining about very minor and fairly irrelevant details.
