Seems like more of a hassle to have to use the wind shield on an SM57 and easier to just use an SM58 . But the White House only seems to use SM57's . Why is that ??

From doing Presidential appearances years ago, 57's were used because there was room on the old 3 mic mount with wind screens. 58's with wind screens were just to tight and the big shots didn't like the visuals. The 57 with the windscreen just looks more professional.

I keed I keed. NO POLITICS Still EFFING HILARIOUS!!! ROFL! With regards to the mics... anyone else remember when they switched to SM99s with tiny windscreens for a short period of time? Much better sound, pickup and smaller profile. Great little mics! I still have a pair of the SM98s somewhere.

Shit, now I got another mic I've never heard of to try out. ☹

Do you have to reverse polarity on the one you put underneath?

I understood that they use a specific distance so the sibilance is mitigated by the phase offset. It's the same trick with the double lapel mics.

Not shure about now but in the past this wasn't true it was all about having back ups, and it worked never had the problem with a mic like in the debate, with the dual mini phantom powered Condensers.

Does the 57 resist hot air better than the 58?

Funny thread. I used to have a pair of 57 windscreens. Don't know what happened to them.

I didn't recognize the mic on the Trump presser yesterday. He was poppin' p's like a cross between Doug Neidermeyer and Daffy Duck. 'Course he couldn't hear it.

I'm always interested in reducing sibilance . The more I dive into this and talk to others who have done FOH on presidents, this is urban legend based on the following. 1. The mounts are fixed so no way to adjust for such. 2. The mixed source is always moving so you would need constant ajustment. 3. The guys I know all say it's simple back up.

Didn't the Greatful Dead use two vocal mics with one out of phase for a while to cancel ambient noise from the stage?

Yeah I'm not sure what's up I can't find a good side view. The thing with The Canadian PM & PM from Japan both looked like single 57's. It wouldn't surprise me if trump wanted to change the look, but not having a backup just isn't Presidential! Stuff happens! I couldn't believe anybody used Condensers or Wireless on the Campaign! I remember many years ago explaining how easy it would be to hijack someone's Wireless Freq at a Senate debate! Pissed off the video guys but My " even a $10k Wireless is a shitty substitute for a crappy $10 mic cable got through".

Didn't the Greatful Dead use two vocal mics with one out of phase for a while to cancel ambient noise from the stage? That's interesting. I never heard about this technique in FOH engineering. While the idea sounds interesting at first, i wonder, how the out-of-phase/phase cancelled voice would sound. Would this not be a serious show-stopper for a problem, that might be fixed better maybe by a more suitable mic characteristic, like, say, using a hypercardiod mic to block ambient noise (and avoid accidential feedbacks widely)? Am i missing something obvious or did i understand this technique wrong? Is there some special eq-ing be done?
