I like the Slate stuff I have, including the VMS. I prefer my UAD plugins. They just sound better. I also prefer my tribute mics to my VMS.
The ML-2 looks cool and I may pick up 2.
Sounds like they had issues emulating a stock U67 on the ML-1. That sucks for me, cause the U67 emulation was why I picked up the VMS and turned out to be based on a modded U67. Glad I just bought the Max Mod U67 kit.

Can't watch right now. Funny thing, I'm in a conversation right now with Steven Slate on Facebook. I asked if FG-X 2 is ever coming, and after lots of back and forth about how to use Slate's FG-X, I sent Steven a stereo track he's going to master with FG-X. That should be interesting to hear. The track is messy and edgy, done before I got a handle on digital recording, so it's a challenge.

look out UAD he's gunning for ya. So now solutions for small studios, a lot of people who bought into VMS will be jumping on this. Love him or hate him, he's driving the software / hybrid sector atm.

I predict Slate DAW this time next yr.. Ditto that. And you can only get it if you buy a Raven, and only works with Slate plugins, me thinks.

One thing to remember is he has an association with Paul Wolff, who likely had a hand in the VRS8 design.

Wonder if there are line ins. According to a post from Steven over on the other forum, you are supposed to be able to use the "instrument" inputs for line in. Also, I see that the inputs on the rear are Neutrik Combo's -- so line is likely possible there, I'd think.

Do we talk Steven Slate or do we talk his product? I feel tons of hate in some answers here and I have a feeling that some are jealous that they don't get the big pay check.
Yet I have not seen a real statement on the specs of the new interface.

Hi guys, thanks for checking the VRS8 and ML-2 launch video. I really love making music and making gear, and that's why I do what I do. Creating these presentations is no easy task and it's not something I love doing, but I do it with passion and pride because we work hard on these tools and it's rewarding to show them to the industry after years of late nights. I'm well aware that when you put yourself out there as the face of the company in the internet age, you are bound to be off putting to some and clearly it has brought out the inner 'high school haters club' at this forum, and that's fine. After a decade, I'm able to filter through it so that I can find the users who genuinely have great perspectives and feedback on the industry, which allows me to learn and improve. That's why I always keep my eyes and ears open at forums like realgearonline... it's invaluable to help me make better decisions about future developments. So thanks for the discussion, and let me know if there are any questions that I could answer about the Virtual Recording Studio. And if you have any issues with our software, I urge you to contact support at www.slatesupport.com and we'll help you as fast as possible. Martin, as soon as I'm back from NAMM I'll send you some FG-X setting for your awesome tunes. Thanks very much guys, Steven

Looking forward to being your new PR guy. Respect for coming on here, and as I said earlier, you are pretty much driving this area of the market. I don't use your products but will inevitably benefit from the market being pushed forward so thanks.

Hello Steven! I guess you can't make everyone happy, I own and use many of your plug-ins. Recently the subscription was such a good deal I jumped on the yearly subscription. I thought the video of the new products was very well done. Im sure the new products will be a hit. May I ask a few questions?
1) will SSD5 feature any type of tap to find feature similiar to EZ drummer? I find this a fantastic feature.
2) any plans for a LA-3A in the virtual rack?
Sorry to discuss other products for a moment I appreciate any info in advance and keep rocking and rolling!

Everyone loved you Steven and then when that switch to the ole pesky 64bit plugs happened and you couldn't get the staples people depended on up and running (you were trying to develop a shitload of new products) everyone went elsewhere and still have an extremely bitter taste in their mouth. I still use your stuff, I even have the annual sub, but, when that all happened it screwed me pretty bad so I'm pretty hesitant to stick any of those plugs on mixes I've got to pull back up in 2 years or to send out. Sorry, just being honest.
With that said, if I was setting up shop for the first time and getting myself up and going I would had killed for something like this. IMO you need to make a bigger package though, like 2 of them and 12 of those mics, then someone can do full out band.
Good luck with the new line, people have to admire you dreaming up something and actually doing it, I admire that.

Hey Steven, On this rainy, shitty day in L.A. you pretty much brought sunshine to my life and put a huge smile on my face. I mean, isn't that freaking amazing when people essentially prove to you, especially with that whiff of passive aggression, that they're pretty much exactly who you thought they were? Take me for example, I'm a total dick. At least that's what people tell me when I point out the obvious... but I digress.
But lets get back onboard the serious express here... I gotta hand it to you, you do one solid job of presenting your product. Live room, full of people, cameras on. You handled that like a champ. Steve Jobs will probably always be the gold standard when it comes to making a device introduction keynote feel like magic. I kind of see you as the aspiring Jersey Shore Steve Jobs in that regard. You're confident, you're... well, confident... and... uh, did I mention confident? Look, I can appreciate the fact that I probably don't fully understand the kind of preparation and man hours that went into it. I'm sure there was plenty of rehearsing to get all those talking points down, and brother, you got them down. No ambiguity there. I bet you rehearsed the ever-lovin' shit out of it just to get it right. I just somehow imagine you rehearsing in front of the bathroom mirror and every now and then, breaking copy to ask yourself, "You talking to me?"
But where Steve Jobs excelled and you kinda miss the mark is he had a knack of making it seem like he was talking with you, not at you. His approach just felt, well, uh, friendly, right?
I get it. Being originally a Northeast US native myself, I understand that friendly discourse is not completely in our DNA. But in today's world, the product presentation aesthetic that psychologically works best is one that's more conversational... yours just feels a wee bit confrontational. Now, I'm not saying you have to be John Krasinski in the eSurance commercials, but I for one, would love to see you smile a bit more on camera and get the sense that you're enjoying yourself... and in that regard, maybe help you win over the "high school haters" as you call them in your "I'm not insecure about it, so I'm going to make mention of it to make it seem like it doesn't bother me a little bit" pseudo reverse-psychology kind of way.
I'm not saying you miss the bullseye worse than an cross-eyed archer. I sense a lot of fierce pride in the amazing things you've accomplished. Perhaps what I'm saying in my stupid long-winded screed is that sometimes it feels to me like the products exist so that we know who you are instead of the other way around. I feel like you're a hammer that treats every presentation like a nail.
But who am I to say? I used to work with this billionaire who told me that 1/3 of the people out there hated him, 1/3 were indifferent and 1/3 loved him because he wasn't afraid to piss off everybody else. He built a megafortune on that 1/3rd and buried his competition along the way. He forged a place for his business with that attitude and eventually just let the product do the talking. If you ever get to that point, where you feel like you don't need to spend so much time in front of the camera, there will be those of us who will miss you, even if its just so we can fill at least one teaspoon of our empty little lives with making sport of it. Just keep making cool stuff people talk about.
Nice of you to drop by.

This is the first time in a long time I have been disappointed in the quality of the dialog on RGO. Debating the merits of gear, technique and even artistry is one thing, commenting on looks, hype and reality show stars is another. On this forum, we have: Distinguished designers and entrepreneurs (Dan, Langston, jsteiger, Svart), industry icons (Bob O, Dr Bill), world class gear pimps (Ericn), influential writers, players, folks who have worked their asses off to learn something and then share it. Who hasn't learned something from a post by mrholmes, Ragan, jcoutu or MJB? I'm embarrassed because I can't even begin to list all the names and accomplishments and people I have learned from. Forgive me. So now we are joined by another industry icon. Somebody who knows one heck of a lot, has shared it, and who has a history of bringing innovative products to the market, who has built a business (some of us know just how hard that is to do) and been very public with both his successes and mistakes. I own some Slate products, and in the past, when there have been problems, he has personally answered my questions and made things right. I'm not the least bit surprised he would offer to help Martin with FG-X settings. Based on my experience that is typical of him. Has anyone in this thread given him the warm welcome I have seen with dozens of other new arrivals to RGO? Welcome to RGO, Steven! The best audio recording forum on the Web.

I think it's awesome that Steven showed up. I have no problems with the discussion here. Is he passionate? Absolutely! Is he innovative? No doubt! Can his products deliver up to the hype? OK, that's where we diverge in opinion. I wish him the best, and I have no idea how he has the time to do everything he does. When FGX works like it's supposed to, I'll take another listen. Until then, it and VCC and a couple of other slate plugs remain in my "unused plugins" folder. No worries. They are joined by others from a wide variety of companies as well. At this stage Steven's philosophy on what constitutes a studio, and what I believe constitutes a studio are headed 180 degrees in the opposite direction. That's cool. There's people who need what he does, but that's not really me at this point. If I need a virtual studio I can run on an airplane from my iPhone, I know what I'm going to look though!!! Cheers, and a happy and successful NAMM to Slate & their gang.

A little manners and humility go a long way. Heading straight to the negative about a product you have never seen, let alone used...is just poor form. Personal remarks and observations about someones looks, really? Thats not what this place is about. Stick to gear... Stick to being friendly and helpful. Offer advice to help others, and learn from the advice others have. Offer advice, based on your personal experience with the gear or technique, not what you read or watched on the internet. Post examples when you can. Be a nice and kind and thoughtful human.... we need more of them. cheers Wiz
