Seriously the VP312's are easy as pie to DIY.
If you can solder an XLR (and you should if you are running a studio!) then get yourself a couple of kits.
I built my second VP312 in under 2 hours excluding the opamp which you can buy pre made if DIY'ing those are a concern.
Much simpler build than the VP28 and a breeze compared to something like the LC53A EQ.

They defo would get more love if you could easily buy them as pre-made units, I had a VP26? I got off E-bay, someone was making them and selling them in Europe which was awesome. It sounded awesome, everything is awesomeee! Everything is cool when you're part of a team *cough* (sorry tangent). Then the guy stopped selling them and now if I want one, I'm left to use my ham hock hands to splutter together a kit which ends up looking like a puppy attacked a lego technics set. I do love all CAPI stuff and would jump on some VP312's if I could. Happy Birthday Shadow - 312's are all that's left @£350 a pop - be quick though, as all this talk on here is gonna make them fly ..........Bartacusad they sound amazing! www.renegadesound.co.uk/store-home/!/500-Series-Preamps/c/18733520/offset%3D0%26sort%3Dnormal

Wish I could take some of the credit but when you pair a great guitar player and guitar with some pretty decent mics and some killer mic pre's it makes it almost a no brainer. I did press record though : )

It's like Rick Rubin bypassing the Neve busses! OMG, that's hilarious.

The CAPI 312 got recommended to me for vocals. All I can say is that it sounds clean and suprisingly hi fidelity but yet also very forward and upfront on vocals. The 312 is a lot cleaner on vocals than the WA12 I was using before. I am not using a Neve box because I want something with punch and that is more mid forward.

Yep, to me it is the quintessential vintage API sound. Now I'm wondering what it would sound like with the Litz wire transformer....

I was doing a comparison the other day with the VP26 vs VP312 on vocals . The VP312 has more transients and is more pointy with sibilance . The VP26 is smoother with less sibilance and a less pointy sounding . So for me VP26 or VP28 on vocals , but I can see how on acoustic and drums the more transients would be a good thing with the VP312 .

That's the cool thing about these CAPI mic pre's and DIY in general is that you can tailor things to your liking or needs. The op amp makes a huge difference in the eq and transient response as well as the transformer. The Melcor 1731 tends to be less transient and not as bright as say the SL2520. I haven't really been a big fan of the SL2520 in any of the other CAPI pre's I've built but it really works in the VP312 for me. I imagine it may have something to do with the larger transformer possibly. Regardless, it's great to have so many options at such a great price.

I have a pair of VP312 that I modified with Cinemag CMMI-8PCA input transformers, and they are my go-to pair for any and all recording. I especially do love them on guitars. I chose them above the VP26 and stock VP312.
Can't recommend them enough.
Also the N72 from Seventh Circle Audio gets #1 vocal duties.
