So I had some random parts laying around and since I've built all of Jeff's other mic pre's I figured it'd be good to have a pair of VP312D's. I only have one DI box so I figured it'd be good for that too. I knew they'd sound good because all of Jeff's stuff sounds good but I had no idea that they would become my favorite mic pre's for acoustic guitar!! A buddy of mine, Dylan Rosson, had just played the same acoustic on an EP that I just finished so I knew very well what his guitar sounded like going through the VP28's. I decided since I hadn't heard the VP312's that I'd give them a try. Holy crap!! I couldn't believe how detailed and balanced the guitar was. It just sounded exactly like his guitar does in the room! Imagine that! Anyway, I thought I'd share it with you guys. The setup was a modded MXL 2001 and an AT4033 into the VP312's through the Burl B2 into Pro Tools. No eq, just reverb. I know it's not one of those recordings that's got immediate wow factor but considering this is my starting point with this guitar it's really exciting. https%3A//soundcloud.com/user-841879432/acoustic-snippet-with-vp312d

What was the stereo technique? Yes, one on the 12th fret and one at the bridge

What was the stereo technique? Sorry, I didn't read that correctly. Not really even sure what you would call this technique. I guess spaced pair (except I used different mics).

Yes, a simple 312 design can sound very good. 2 transformers and an opamp inbetween, a path pure enough on the one hand and enough color due to the transformers alone. Jeff's other designs add a second stage mostly, but with a 312 design you are already 2/3 there. Gone into slight satureation, this for sure can sound wonderful. You could even use a chip instead of a DOA and it will still sound cool due to the transformers alone...

This clip inspired me to buy one myself. Now my acoustic go-to too! Thanks, Bart! Now I need another one.

I recently finished a pair of CAPI VP312's. I like their punchiness. Next on the list is another pair of VP312's but fitted with either Jensen or Cinemag nickel transformers and a 990 op amp. I'm figuring these will end up on overheads.

I'm not sure a 312 is considered underrated.. I mean it's one of the most sought-after preamps around..
I have 8 of them, and I wish I had room for more!

It is underrated in the sense that the VP28 & VP26 get most of the attention in the CAPI world. Most of the engineers in Nashville that I work with and know use the VP28's, not the VP312. Just trying to send a little love to a pre that I've never heard anyone talk about.

Yes. After vp28ing for a while, my vp312s were a real eye opener. Much fuller bass and larger space/3d feel going on.

Whats the preferable DI setup/selection? I'm gonna order my first DI version & oh there's so many choices; Active Fet1 , Active Ic1 would only use the DI for my passive basses from time to time if that helps. Supposed to go opposite of what you use correct? So active bass then passive DI etc correct? Thoughts?

Not having tried any of thers I can't really speak to the differences.

I still love my VP28's and mix through them everyday but the VP312 totally surprised me. I'm not a huge fan of the API 3124 so I really didn't know what to expect when I built these. I used them last night on a session and the guitar player was blown away by how huge his acoustic sounded!

Sounds great. Which opamp and transformer did you use? Thanks! The transformer is the EA2503 and the OpAmps are SL2520's.

They defo would get more love if you could easily buy them as pre-made units, I had a VP26? I got off E-bay, someone was making them and selling them in Europe which was awesome. It sounded awesome, everything is awesomeee! Everything is cool when you're part of a team *cough* (sorry tangent).
Then the guy stopped selling them and now if I want one, I'm left to use my ham hock hands to splutter together a kit which ends up looking like a puppy attacked a lego technics set.
I do love all CAPI stuff and would jump on some VP312's if I could.

Hit him up and I'm sure he'd be glad to hook you up or at the least I'm sure you could find somebody on here to build it for you.
