I'll try them, but there are forums with folks also looking who claimed Tascam essentially told them they didn't have anything to give them.. But it looks like some of the other machines of the era, the Otari MTR-90 also need the remote to arm tracks. I guess it was just how they were used at the time. I have a new cable coming, and I'm hoping that it's just a bad cable.. I have found the guys in the Tascam parts department to be very willing to have a conversation and try to help. Bad cable or perhaps a bridged pin in one of the connectors might make sense here. That's what I was thinking, cable or connector problem*. The remote for my Studer developed a somewhat similar problem. Fortunately the remote is not essential on the A-800, so I.m ignoring it for now, mainly because it appears to be a problem with a pin on the chassis of the deck, not the cable, which makes it an incredible PITA to work on . * - unless the whole thing is under logic control in which case something flaky with the logic could be the culprit.

Well, I did mention a few posts back that I fixed it. It was the power supply in the remote unit. It didn't come up to full rail fast enough, and some of the chips were glitching. I replaced it with a modern point-of-load power supply and the unit works flawlessly now. I also rebuild the shuttle controls and re-lubed everything and it seems to work pretty great now. I need to finish all the wiring harnesses for it, and I can start using it regularly.

So I've gotten the machine 100% up and running.
I tracked some messing around and I gotta say, I like what it does.
Honestly, I thought I'd hear more difference in the drums than I do, but it definitely makes things sound different.
The one thing I hear a drastic difference in is distorted guitars. It just makes them sit perfectly. Driving them hard into the tape, they just settle right on down with no extra fizz or anything. It's great! Best distorted guitar sound I've ever gotten I think.
Bass is pretty good, definitely rounds off the plucky transients while not really messing with the tone of the bass much.
I think I'm gonna love this thing.
